Gief is most definitely the OG grappler.
But grapplers have been done better.

T-Hawk - Gief light. Not a true grappler.
Sodom - Poor man’s Gief. Pass.
Birdie in SFA - Nope, I played Rose because no Gief in Alpha 1 and the “substitutes” weren’t up to speed.
R. Mika - Almost okay. Keeps the wrestling spirit at least and mostly grabs people.
Hugo - Acceptable in the lack of true Gief.
El Fuerte - KOF Ramon done poorly.
Hakan - Finally someone worthy of Gief’s legacy. But is still not Gief.
Ryu’s future if the Heart of Battle doesn’t remain a priority.

I’m a fan, but at least once a week someone here complains about how characters were changed, how how they fear a new character might be changed. The WWs are a slave to their own legacy.

Most recently there has been discussion of Cody, Makoto, and Juri.
And you just mentioned Vega.

Yeah they’re all good. The problem is Juri and Vega are in the trashcan. Cody’s is great, it’s barely even a rework, he just got additional tools.
Juri players, myself included, have mentioned that the stores just aren’t worth it. Which is the only issue, the concept and execution is great, but she’s garbage tier wise. Same case on Vega, he’s just really fucking bad, but the rework makes a lot of sense.
