University cost has being rising by absurd levels for a few decades, far outpacing wages and im pretty sure inflation.
From what I’ve heard they’ve raised their prices in response to the widely available student loans. Like the government loans out $10 to everyone to buy a shirt, but suddenly everyone raises their shirt prices to $20.
UCLA admission for in state is 13k and out of state 37k
Shit is legit high priced. Students routinely come out of uni with 80-100k in student loan debts. Now tell me… is that worth that worthless paperweight gender studies degree no one cares about? That English degree so you can be a substitute teacher or an unemployed teacher?
Yeah probably not.
Yet I went to trade school and THEY PAID ME (job corps) and I came out of there and got a job right away. The job was shit, but hey I was getting paid to learn. Eventually the GFC hit and I moved to Australia and used my old skills t get a job in the iron ore mines working 12 hour days and getting paid 40 an hour, plus getting flown to and from work and having free room and food for the duration of my stay.
It wasn’t perfect but damn if the shit didn’t have me gainfully employed.
Yeah man, but most people make it out of highschool with woefully insufficient writing skills without even knowing it. And there’s probably a “good English” joke in there, but I can’t tell if that was intentional. Anyway, even if you get a well paying technical degree, only being able to document your work at a highschool level is a problem.
Nobody should major in Street Fighter footsies, but if you can get a Chemical Engineering major with a minor in footsies, that’s a pretty fucking boss use of 4 years.
That’s because most public schools are shit. You could argue it’s negligence but it doesn’t benefit the powers that be to have an educated populace.
You learn useless(to 99% of people) shit like the Pathagoran (spelled wrong fuck it) Theorem but i bet no highschool student knows their rights other than the 1st and 2nd Amendment. I know for damn sure Communism is literally the work of Satan but African as a continent may as well not exist outside of slavery and Egypt.
History is actually the thing woefully most misunderstood by most young people. I did teach students in English for a while, and while they may not have spoke or wrote it in a conventional way, most ppl know how to communicate their feelings well enough past a certain age. Besides, English is a bullshit language that changes constantly, so I don’t get so hung up on the exact details as much as my peers did.
But history? Sheesh. When textbook makers are still arguing creation and evolution and how much Jefferson needs to be mentioned and referring the IRA as “a joint agreement,” then public school kids are fucked
Yeah, no, the overwhelming majority of students coming out of high school are not equipped to communicate properly at a professional level. But unless you’re taking classes where you’re grinding your writing (like a Technical Writing class), odds are very good that you’re not a very effective writer.
Good writing is work; most people don’t see writing as work. Hence most people are bad writers.
I was mainly referencing orally, which a lot of cranks have a hang up about, but yes, I didn’t have the time to dedicate to writing, and it’s very low priority. Although the way I did get around it was to ask kids what they thought of as “good” writing, why they thought it was, then come to a consensus of how to best imitate that or find the quality there
That’s what Reticently was talking about. Nobody cares if you can speak, they care whether or not you can write down instructions properly or give people bad news without getting your place of work sued.
Both of those are surprisingly hard things to do. It requires that you had a good professor (which I did) and that you take it seriously (which I used to). Neither of those things happen in college. They do happen in community college. The place where they send cops 24/7 because their reports are shit shows.
So gentlemen, lets not make this another gun control shit show where most of you try to discuss a subject you’re all woefully unprepared to actually discuss. Stick to the usual stuff like “There are people hitting each other so Smash must be a fighting game” or “People buy MK for the gameplay” or whatever other ridiculous shit you guys have lined up in this nerd forum.
You dont know tradesmen? Because there’s carpentry uses a hell of a lot of geometry. After that you get a lot of people that can use basic linear functions to make life easier but dont know how it applies.
Math could definitely stand to take a more important role. I think the issue is that there are lots of times where it’s taught as math for maths sake, which doesn’t stick as much as “here’s this very real scenario you should be prepared for,” which I felt fell off after a while.
You mean the people who go to a special school to learn the knowledge required for their job?
Even if i took your claim at face value, schools are clearly incapable of teaching those things effectively. You could pull 1000 people off the street and I guarantee less than 200 use the p. Theorem or whatever the fuck linear functions are.
In the field of what? Not a single teacher refers to themselves this way. I don’t know what nonsense move this is to make yourself sound good but this is the type of stuff that would get you laughed at if you pulled it with professionals.
Yeah but public schools are there to give you a general education. We don’t know what you’re going to do, so here is this general knowledge base that can be useful later. People are real fucking quick to shit on math but then you have cashiers that can’t subtract. Basic call center jobs that require you to do simple ass math suddenly have to deal with a lot of job applicants that can barely manage. What’s worse is that if you’re one of the few who can, you then become very promotable from the other ground floor people.
Nevermind the fact that even if you’re a tradesman, you’ll still be doing math if you become a small business owner. That’ll send you right back into some basic algebra that makes your life infinitely easier.
But sure, it isn’t like community colleges don’t make bank off of wasting your college assistance on remedial classes because people can’t deal. Oh right they fucking do.
Agreed. Math and history both are done wrong. I wish my public school had a class on creating and growing a business, throwing in concepts from law and economics as needed. Math is boring until it’s using your burn rate to predict when you’re VC dries up.
History was always a series of disconnected facts to me. It needs to pull in basic psychology and just"how people work" so we can see patterns, see why “history repeats itself”. Insead I’m asked to remember May 9th 1854 a thing happened.
Math needs dollar signs, history needs “well of course he invaded Prussia fuck I would have too”.
On another lighter subject the 2hr of farming in FFX got me 13 sphere levels per character, but I wasn’t being efficient, than it hit me that my fights tick has an auto turbo button.
So now I hooked it up on my proper pc, loaded the save file before the fight used Tidus cheer to make him, Wakka and Kimahri able to 1shot the sins pawns and forced the fight order to have them kill 2/3 when they spawn technically the one left will always do the wings flicker thing as its 1st turn and then die to the 1 guy that did not get his turn yet.
Set the confirm button to auto and I will let it rock while I go to bed, and check the result tomorrow morning.
Cashiers not being able to subtract is literally one of the points I’m making. If they can’t do basic math they sure as fuck don’t need to be in a high school geometry class learning about triangles.
And yes again school is for general knowledge. Teaching shit that 5 of 30 kids may use is not general knowledge. It’s only really helpful to a small subset. Like if everyone was basically math and english literate id agree but as you yourself stated that isn’t the case.
Why aren’t we out here teaching every kid how to weld? Or fuck that how about putting oil in their damn car.
