Thanks for the feedback guys. I work in the store and was there today (NOT the guy helping Sam out in the metal boots  ) Like it was stated before we actually do plan out the tournaments, but it really is just a “This game, this week” type. Sam is really into doing these but sometimes doesn’t give all the information in a timely manner. Being a new store communication is still being worked out and the store staff have already expressed their concerns with never knowing the details (for any tournament) far enough in advance. It’s not just you guys with those concerns.

I know the payout was an issue but from what I was told at “a certain point it becomes a level of gambling” (Not my words, don’t shoot the messenger). I am certain that there are enough of you who have run tournaments before so getting info on how you handle payouts will definitely help us. With the turnout as great it was today (yes 12 is a great turnout for us) I’m sure that Jay will want to run more fighting game tournies in the future. Having you guys who are a dedicated following to the community giving feedback is the only way we’ll ever be able to do it better.

I was grateful to see so many people from SRK there today and felt confident that with a little tweaking, we could run another very soon, and much more smoothly.

I’ve actually thought about this. Wait, first let me say what you were told is completely wrong because 95% of the people entering know they don’t have a shot in hell of winning any money. I’m not betting on myself to win by entering. It’s a tournament, tournaments have entry fees and prizes, and it’s not like you can lose money if you go on a bad streak. It’s not gambling.

Anyways, that’s not what I meant when I said “I’ve actually thought about this.” I was thinking wouldn’t it be sick if there were hella arcades with buff players and people played high stakes money matches? Everyone would quit their jobs and sell everything they had and go challenge someone to a money match for it all. Just kill yourself if you lose.

Like I said I was just told that and assumed it was truth. I think where we dropped the ball was NOT reaching out to people who have held fighting game tournaments before. A mistake that I hope we don’t make again.

sigh Look up gambling laws in WA before giving PnT a hard time, eh? There are ways to go about it, but nobody wants to chance a gross misdemeanor as a business owner for “gambling”.

Amazing, simply amazing. And good shit to munky SHYAN for taking top spot.

XD This post deserves more credit.

seriously, you cant get worse… Can you?

Not that I particularly care either way, but these PnT tournaments are giving out cash prizes.

Pretty sure that looks like a cash payout, could be wrong though and actually that was for money because here’s the tourney events link for that tournament…

Here’s one where the prize is store credit…

Now with that, it should be easy to assume that different PnT locations do different things about prizes. Maybe the type of prizes they provide alternate or change depending on what the next event is. Who knows? Assumptions are bad, but assumptions that are backed by actual research probably tend to be more bearable. After all, they have PnT tournaments in NYC, and I’m sure those guys aren’t entering unless there’s money involved.

Anyway, thanks to Play N Trade for throwing an event. Hopefully they throw more because the Seattle area is hurting for tournaments and events. Outside of this event that just happened, I’m sure the next event isn’t until the Gameclucks event in October.

You can’t be more of a pain, can you? Read more, dude. Some of the same guys are always winning/placing in major poker tournaments because they’re good at it. They know how to play, read the players, and make educated guesses when they need to. Skill wins, but it’s still gambling. If someone from the gambling commission, w/e calls it, you get slapped. Whether or not it is gambling technically or otherwise, a lot of people wouldn’t want to chance it.

Stop bitching up. You know you if had a remote chance in hell of Winning this tournament " even though you have probably won nothing in your life " GTFO here with this, gambling commission bull shit. Why the fuck are you even TALKING in a tournament thread, you dont even compete. Your a sideline bitch made dude that pops his head up every once in awhile to say some random shit " usually hate " and then you crawl back under your bridge.

Sure if you really wanna look at it, it could be called gambling. but then again, People get win bonuses in fights in MMA, can you call that gambling as well? Anything a company gives away for a prize for competition could be gambling. Bitch, you need to read. Dont come at me with gambling laws after watching a couple episodes of The Practice. thinking you know some shit.

Yes, Its great that PnT are throwing tournaments. Hell ITS FUCKING FANTASTIC, that some companies actually give a damn about the fighting game community, not just focusing on just Halo bums. But dont get stupid when people have logical reasoning for asking for a different prize.

I believe that it is considered gambling when you are wagering something to get something of value. The difference between say a poker tournament and a fighting game tournament is that after you have paid the entry fee, you are given a certain amount of chips to gamble off(poker) or you are granted one or two losses(fighting games). Since in poker you are actually waging a certain amount of chips every hand in hopes of winning something of value (more chips), that can be considered gambling. But in a fighting game nothing of value is being waged. It’s just a one on one battle and whoever is the better player that game moves on. If every match were a money match then it would be considered gambling. But in this case it is not.

When it comes to legal matters, it’s always best to not take anything for granted. Rather than just going by what is said on the forum, I’d suggest that the guys at Play N Trade consult with an attorney or someone who’s knowledgeable about gambling and contest laws. While it’s unlikely anyone will do anything, I’d hate for them to get in trouble just for trying to help the community.

This.

Unless someone here plans to get out WA State Laws on Gambling, you all need to STFU. This thread went to shit because of someone saying the word “gambling”.

This tourney was fun. It’s definitely a unique experience to have 10-year-old kids and their mom’s getting excited about the final match of a Street Fighter tournament. It reminded me of what it’s like to be a kid.

Thanks Play N Trade!

Yeah let’s get back on track here. When’s the next one? And will the structure be the same or different?

That’s a damn fine question. Jay (the owner) LOVED that we got so many people and wants to have another for sure. I think it would be great if we can get one of you local players to be a guide of sorts and help us run it so it runs more smoothly.

If the demand is great enough, I don’t see why we couldn’t run another tournament in the next few weeks.

moving to the “Big” screen behind the counter for the grand final was more of a pain then what it was worth. not only did it halt operations of the store, it wasn’t the ideal playing position for the players.

in the future if the turn out is larger you may want to setup more stations in the back and run pools. when it gets down to semis/finals have the players play on the back wall. that way you can catch a view from the front of the store.

more chairs?
