I would man, but knowing how shit is going. I’m not going to derail the thread, but the Vet just told us our other Ferret has cancer also… FUCK LIFE!
Nevermind read the pay out and LOL sorry
hmm, thing about this tourney is. If at least 20 players show, the players are the ones with the short end of the stick. Am I to understand we pay $10 entree fee and we get no money back? ONLY a 100 dollar gift certificate? If this is true, then its more so the venue is just trying to make money off the players. If you wanna make a little, just take 5% or 10% of pot and give something back to the players more so then a gift certificate.
Just my opinion, not sure if ill be attending this.
J-Cole
You guys should not go and/or let me win this because I’d love a game certificate because video games are too fucking expensive and I can’t get myself to spend cash on em
yeah son
I’ve run one of these before and it’s pretty much the same.
The only one that really benefits is Play N Trade itself.
Personally, I’d rather get Food Stamps instead of store credit. I don’t buy many games, but myself and everyone else eats!
Imagine if a SF4 tourney was run at Disneyland and they gave Disney dollars as the prize instead of cash?
Dave Chappelle once said “You can’t buy weed or pussy with Disney dollars, fuck that!”
My 2 cents.
EDIT: I don’t mind paying a venue fee, but pay the players with cash.
A fair venue fee is somewhere between $3 to $5 (small local tourney). $10 to $20 for a major (EVO/NWM).
Grand prize is blowing your $100 grand prize at PlayNTrade. Good job guys.
This is not the way ppl should be acting, I understand that people want to try to have some kind of motivation for going ($$$$), but let me ask you guys this:
After this and tourneyplay, when’s the next tournament?
Face it, we as a scene are SPOILED when it comes to venues, so they are offering gift certificates for 1st, so it seems like the tournament itself is mainly focusing on bringing in sales, instead of bitching about how whack the payout is, go to it and then see if you can talk with them to make some changes. From their eyes, if I see that the first sfiv tournament held (with or without short notice) only pulled in 4 people. I wouldn’t want to hear ideas from someone on how to make it better, especially if they didn’t go to my first one.
/food for thought
Fuck them for holding a tournament and only guaranteeing a $100 gift certificate, even if only 4 entrants show up. How dare they even contemplate earning money for doing the work, offering the space, and running the event. Let’s boycott PlayNTrade, guys. Or…
You could just go to the event because you want to help support our scene. You could attend because you want to show support for a retailer that supplied multiple consoles, HDtvs, and copies of games for NWM '09. The same guys who helped us move tables and gear around in between each time block, and helped to setup the consoles for the current gen illiterate old men like me. You could go to meet new players and try to introduce them to competitive play–perhaps even invite them to training sessions. You could even attend because, [gasp], you like playing SFIV.*
At the very least, you could refrain from talking down to the event. Such posts make us look bad to a retailer that’s been nothing but kind in our scene’s recent history. These types of posts might also dissuade potential fence-straddlers from attending.
For the record, I drove to the Kirkland branch the week after NWM and bought a PS3 as a housewarming gift. I could have saved ~$30 had I ordered online. But dammit, these guys even gave out those seizure-inducing necklaces at NWM for free. How could I not show support for them?
*I know this one’s a stretch. Especially considering how the majority of the SFIV players have been responding in this thread.
Lord knows I have no prayer of ever placing top 3 at any Marvel tournament anywhere. But I rode down to 2 of Random Select’s tournaments in the last 2 years. I almost always enter Marvel tournaments at Preppy’s when I’m there. And if Funtasia were to hold a MvC2 tournament tomorrow on those shitastic sticks, I’d enter if I weren’t already busy. This is because I like the game, and I want to support the community for that game.
Can’t believe I’m flaming cross continents.
thank you guys, you basically said what I didn’t want to. fuckin a dawgs, how many of you would even get first place? if I entered tourneys based on what I’d get out of it monetarily, I’d have entered exactly zero tournaments.
Well, my suggestion is not talking down an event. It is simple Business. Take a cut of the entree and you give back to the players. Its already written in stone and a normal in our community. Name one venue out there in the states that is just having a huge support and then taking all the money and not offering anything to the players. They get their money by takings a cut and sales within the venue when the players are there. Look at all the spots in la, ec, texas, utah, ohio, arizona, and atlanta complete support and its fair for both parties. Its just the principle of the matter.
Do not let me forget the fact that multiple people called to ask details bout the event and nobody could find anything solid and were givin the run around. Sure, im glad they helped out with NW, that was a good relationship and bonding. At least do some research on whats really going on and truly support the scene. Our scene is weak right now, we need more positive motivators in it supporting it but not trying to get us at the same time. We have a scene of a strong 50+ heads. Does a venue need a mere 500 bucks at 10 a head for an event they might happen once a month? Is it really that serious? you telling me they cant get a % of that and give back to the community to make them happy and keep them coming to their venue? Its all about giving AND receiving. Basic law of nature. Thats all im saying PlayNTrade is good and im glad they are doing this but they just need to pay a little more attention to whats goin on.
J-Cole
If I wake up in time i’m going to go, I’ll give them my 10 bucks, i’ll loose (oh yes I’ll loose) and I’ll make suggestions on how they can run things better in the future.
if in turn they can help me out with gear for bloody-knuckles, it’s well worth the investment…
holla.
they probably just don’t know tourney ettiquette to be honest
go let em know what’s up cole
They’ve run one tourney a week since they opened a couple months ago, each Sunday a different game. They just picked SFIV this week, and they started planning it probably the same day this post went up. None of them have run tournies in a past life, and people were given the “run around” because the guy, Sam, who is running it was not in to work yet. Just go and meet the dudes. They are cool, and they liked NWM, they are just new to the whole tournament thing.
There’s no diabolical plan to screw people out of their money. They just want to chill and have fun.
I’m awake!!! i feel like shit, and this coffee isn’t helping. but I’m going anyway.
EDIT:
nick if you see this can I borrow one of your TEs? again… fucking 360.
Sorry I couldn’t make it, got a ferret to take care of.
Sorry to hear that. I hope he gets better.
Turnout was around 12 people. The staff seemed pretty into it though, and they may have more tournaments there in the future. If/when the next one happens, we should really try to have a stronger showing. I know there are concerns about the prize situation, but that can all be worked out. If no one comes, then there won’t be any street fighter tournaments there at all.
Props to Nick(MunkyShyan) for winning. I took second, and Kyle Chow (sorry for getting it wrong earlier) got third. Nick has the bracket and will probably post more complete results in a bit.
turnout was ok for such short notice. I was seriously like half asleep trying to play and just embarrassed myself. Kyle’s rufus on a deuce of rockstar was brutal. the people in that shop are super super nice! I pimped bloody-knuckles and got the hookup. I’m hoping they roll that escalade down and setup in front of the venue in case we go over capacity(251).
one thing though, the kid with all the metal and the boots. I seriously almost laid him out with all that stomping and shit he was constantly doing. somebody give that boy an adderall or something. gahh maybe I’m just cranky…
had a good time… even though i got my butt kicked hahaha… but congrats to Nick in winning… and to all the great players good game…
ggs to everybody. congrats to nick for winning and peacing me out
Good shit. A stronger turnout would be in seattle’s favor. Let them know what we want and they will cater to us if they think it will be good business. Of course I would never make it because its on the weekend, but if I could I would attempt to.
