Seth-in-depth Match-up Thread

during mix-ups teleport falls prey to OS neck breakers especially due to the recovery in SSF4.
Neck breaker can also grab Seth out of st.fp and J.fp. : ( Also yay for air throw.

Very true. You have to consider the teleport timing when doing it.
Slow teleport can work at times but it is much harder to do.

It is there as an option tho at times. Not particularly reliable though.

Against Ibuki:

sonic boom xx FADC back > block low > ultra2

nuff said.

Any tips against Hawk? I keep trying to play this like if I’m playing Gief and I keep getting raped. Can I rush him down? I definitely can’t play him like i do gief…

Hyakuretsu normal or EX beats out Ibukis slide normal or EX. So baiting with a sonic boom and then EX Hyakuretsu will get her clean

…The neckbreaker punishes the Sonic Boom before you recover. You can’t do anything after throwing the fireball but get hit unless you FADC.

I just beat out her normal slide from half screen, SB to ex Hyakuretsu and it worked…dunno maybe i lucked out?

I haven’t had much luck rushing him down. LP MT has too much range and online scrubs spam it during combos just like Gief. His normals seem to win or trade pretty often, which is terrible for Seth. And you can’t throw sonic boom safely unless you’re out of range of his condor dive. Once he has ultra, forget using wall jump becaue U2 beats it clean.

The nice part of this match up is that srk seems to beat EVERYTHING Hawk does. HK and EX legs punishes Condor dive on block and a lot of guys I’ve played use it a lot to move around because T hawk is so slow. His other specials are worthless. Spire doesn’t go anywhere and Tomahawk is ridiculously unsafe. If he knocks you down, he can’t do shit to Seth on wake up.

Use j. fierce and st. fierce a lot to keep him away. Also, forgot to mention… I played a turtle Hawk the other day and wall jump into stomps was stuffing his tomahawk chop clean, every time. No idea if this is guaranteed; the guy might have just been reacting too slow, but it’s very useful in getting him to respect Seth’s offense.

Simply put, Zone him like Gief until about 3/4 screen. Then be ready to SRK his condor.

There’s no reason to SRK the condor dive because you can just punish it on block with hyakuretsu/ultra 1 unless you’re worried about the chip.

Thanks for the answers. So far and with this knowledge, does it look like a fere match to you, like gief? Or considerably harder?

PS: Kiku, I like how you changed your icon because it simply stopped being true xD

The thread kind of died but I’ll stop being a douchebag and update within the next few days.

Sorry bout that guys.

Seems a little harder. Getting hit by condor dive can is a bitch, but you pretty much play the same way that jalapno mentioned – zone him out, then watch for condor dive. Not as easy as Gief, but should be pretty easy, nonetheless.

Well, you can’t Typhoon someone who’s already in a Hurricane =P

I’m interested in hearing about this too.

I got date raped by a pretty decent Gen, and felt like a) nothing worked and b) nothing could have worked.

How is he getting in on you guys?

What’s he doing to kill you?

My problem is Gen getting a knockdown on me it’s pretty much over, with ambiguous cross-ups, cross.up Ogas and other basic setups that lead to Super/Ultra or Gekiro.

And that’s all I’ve got so far. it’s still a very hard match-up if he knocks you down. Very very hard. For me at least.

If the Gen you’re playing, has played him since Vanilla and didn’t base his entire game off mk xx Hands, you’re in for some trouble.

Yeah Kanta-Kun, you summed up my experiences vs. good Gens. Thanks for this very useful info.

I’m having problems with the new characters at the moment because I just don’t know the match ups yet. Also some match ups seem to have changed drastically, like Dictator… I’m really struggling here. A good Dictator seems to put Seth on extreme blast (as Sabin put it, lol). Also new and improved Dhalsim is tough, I seem to be okay if I can get in and stay in, a few mix ups and he is stunned. But getting in and staying in is another matter.

As we gather more data, hopefully we can break it down by character and then what works and what doesn’t, followed by how we should generally play the match and what we should be doing and then finally what Ultra we should pick. Armed with this type of data we should be more confidant and perform much better.

You have to play more defensively in both of these match-ups in my opinion. :o

God, finally someone who agrees with me. i don’t know if people have been playing shitty Gens or if we both suck, but I’m leaning towards the first (not eliminating the possibility that I still suck xD) I’ve been picking Ultra 2 against him, most definitely. Gen is not a character against whom you have a lot of chances to land Ultra 1, thanks to his jump arc. So I use Ultra 2 in case I finally get a chance to do dmg.

Anyways, my advice against the new dictator is… don’t move, like… at all. If you jump, you’re dead. Try not to do anything that is remotely punishable by his Ultra, because if you do, you won’t have time to jump and thus will be forced to take the 50/50 side guess.

offtopic: Does anyone find themselves never doing U2 after SRK xx FADC? It’s like second nature for me to do stomps by now. Unless I take a conscious effort to Ultra, I’ll just forget :S

I do it relatively enough to call it about 50/50. I don’t like to use Ultra unless it’s for the kill.

I use Ultra 2 for these reasons:
6 seconds left in the game (Time out)
Chip KO
Combo
Anti-air

I have found myself doing the Sonic Boom set-up into Ultra 2 a lot.

Sonic Boom -> FADC -> Dash -> Ultra 2 as they try to jump over.
