I’ve switched to playing SoR2 in the original Genesis (aka ‘megadrive’ in uk) format, as opposed to the MAME pseudo-arcade version. Seem much the same, other than a couple of sound effect swaps and I’m not sure if it’s my imagination but maybe a downgrade in the power of Blaze neutral jump kick?
Anyway, when I stopped being a perfectionist and gave up only playing until I lost a life I managed to finish the game in Hardest with 3 credits (3 lives), with about a life remaining on my 3rd (with Blaze).
Didn’t lose the first credit until battle with end boss. Have started playing in Mania now, having a tough time of it but almost finished it in 3 creds (9 lives)… actually, 6 creds as I swapped to player 2 just as I was about to die for 3rd time. Lost to final boss.
Seems to be about knowing when to stick and when to run, using range on Blaze jump kick to buy time, and also abusing a specific game engine thing:
when you tech a throw, you gain the invincibility period you get after you get up from a knockdown.
So if you keep the slide-punks alive and allow them to throw you every so often, you can use the invincibility to just wade into a group and hit them with your best shot (in blazes case, usually start grappling and throwing/slamming them into each other).
Grunts get massive buffs in Mania just for the increased speed they move at. Insane really, how fast they can get into a striking position. Can see the value of Axel’s quicker jab, and also how they are more inclined to run straight onto a grand upper, but I refuse to cross to the darkside. Just gotta play different with Blaze is all.
Anyway I’m dying here trying to find out whether DnF is gonna be region locked or not. Heard unofficial rumours both ways, and official statements have been vague and open to interpretation.
SURELY they wouldn’t do that to us Euros… and if they do, SURELY there must be a way around it!!!.. I need this freakin’ game and soon!
Don’t think it’s the character: I just played the last two stages (using level select dipswitch) with Blaze and lost one life on each. If you add to that all the lives I would have gained on the preceeding levels (on which I don’t lose a single life), then that’s a comfortable one cred clearance. Really, on that difficulty a no-life lost is what you should be aiming for.
(just to check though: is that the difficulty level where on Stage 7 near the beginning you fight one fatman and not 2? I only ask because with the different regional versions there might be some differences in difficulty)
BEWD, sorry for not gettin back to you sooner man but I don’t play SoR3. Actually, I should download it and start playing it because I used to and I did enjoy it, but for some reason SoR2 has always appealed to me more. Maybe I should try 3 more though, especially as it rewards not losing a life in a very tangible way (gaining new move upgrades).
Ah, I must say if I were to ever make a game, it would have to be a scrolling brawler.
EDIT: ok, just finished it in Mania using all 3 credits on P1 side and 1 credit on P2 side (where I accidentally selected Skeet, I mean, Skate. Used Blaze other than that slip-up.) Think I’m done with SoR2 until my Axel-playing cousin-in-law has time for a game.
Lol I’m talking about fighting them in Sor1 Lebow, I barely beat them on my third run through finally making it to Mr.X for the first time, but there’s gotta be an easier way, I’ve only been able to beat them with Blaze, playing as Adam or Axel I get mudstomped.
Also funny you mentioned DnF as I’m looking to download that, and really liking the vids I’ve been watching.
I was playing SoR2 the other day and you can actually acutally just jab infinite most of the tougher regular bad guys, if you do it right they can’t get out. Certain bosses also will fall for a few reps of this before just busting out of hit stun and hitting you. Thats why axel is so tight in that game, if you get big groups of enemies to cluster you can jab infinite like 3 guys at a time.
Yeah, it is a very easy game on defaults. This game gives you way too many lives too, three hidden, two in boxes and one at 25k, 50k and then every 100k after that! The jump in difficulty between settings is quite big though.
I tried to beat hard with Axel but to no avail; I’m sure I’ll be able to get it with a little practice though. And I need to do a high score run with Blaze on defaults (suiciding when bosses are low on health to get the full time bonus) and making sure not to throw weapons (as that gets you no points whatsoever).
Oh damn! It even has a replay of the arcade version of Double Dragon III. Great stuff, been looking everywhere for some Double Dragon III resources. Although the version I’m playing is the western version (where you only get Billy and you have to get the other characters by actually putting credits in… and you need to put credits in to get new moves) I’m sure I’ll still find it useful.
Along the same lines, this guy has multiplayer playthroughs of several beatemups. It looks like all the players are controlled by actual humans and not by that 1 input for the players trick.
Does anyone remember that side scrolling beat em up mini game in guilty gear isuka? It was for all intensive purposes really crap, the fact you has to press the shoulder button to change the direction that you were facing was a bit of a joke, but the idea that you can use the full range of moves and combos was pretty cool.
I must say though Guardian Heros by treasure is still a really loved game for me.
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Konami is brutal, Id love to see a one credit run of that!
EDIT: I have only played the NES version (a long time ago), but I don’t think beating this game on one credit would be too hard. It seems that the double button attack doesn’t drain your health like it does in the other TMNT beat 'em ups, which is pretty broken. And well, the TMNT boss patterns are always crap and it’s always easy to figure out a good strategy for them. If part 5 of that playlist is any indication, then it seems this game is no different. But a 1lc of any beat 'em up is something worth applauding, of course.
i see what you mean by crap boss parterns, cant belive we wasted so much money on Krang and Shredder… i blame my attack happy friends. Does anyone remember Last battle for the Genenis (Mega Drive)? that was pretty cool, if not insanely mind numbing.
That would be cool, but scrollers went the same route as modern fighters and put emphasis on giving pplayers crazy movement and offensive options, so you hardly ever think about static defence or even good positining that much. D&D has a shield, but it hardly gets used unfortunately coss you can just slide away or bust out crazy magic attacks.
One game with a great defence mechanic is Knights of the Round. You have to defend in that game to set up your offence. Kind of like a SF3 parry thats rewarded with a short spell of invulnerability.
Regarding good positioning: most people don’t know this, but in X-Men TAG you had to have some good positioning skills to play some of the characters in that game. With the top characters like Nightcrawler and Storm you can just mash that shit a lot of times and it’ll get you through most situations, but even Storm required slightly different positioning for her game to be most effective, and it is absolutely crucial for a character such as Dazzler.
THis is one reason why I consider X-Men to be Konami’s best scrolling beat-em up. They really learned their lessons from all the crap in TMNT1, 2 and Simpsons.
