Scrolling Beatemups

Gekido Urban Fighters
Armored Warriors

Turtles in Time for the SNES is probably my favorite in the genre. Anyone else play it?

Lets you play as Mad Gear!! videos here:

I really hoped this gets dumped for mame soon

PGM have released a new scroller, a sequel to Oriental Legend on thier new PGM2 board. Scrollers will never die!!

Crayfish.

It’s all about Final Fight. Its so classic. But AvP and Punisher are awesome too. There were some other obscure Capcom beat-em-ups too…Battle Circuit, Armored Warriors (Powered Gear).

Dungeon Magic is also good: D&D style (but not so good), secret, special moves and a lot of room. Emulated on mame.

I can’t believe it hasn’t come up yet, but there was a fan-made “remake” (More of a sequel/collection, IMO) released for PC recently, I don’t believe it’s had a final release yet, but it’s certainly playable nao. You can get it here.

On another note: To any War of the Gems players, how can anyone but Spidey be top tier? Once you get the Power Gem, he’s just too good!

Anybody ever heard of Get Backers? It’s a japanese anime and it has like 3 ps2 sidescrolling brawlers.

I would import one but I don’t know the story, etc. and you’d think that It’s irrelevant since it’s a beat em up game but I like to be informed of these things. Like why the hell this girl just turned huge and kicked their asses:

Ah my word, the only games I’ve been playing lately are Sengoku 3 and Streets of Rage 2.

First up, if you can’t get a 200 beat bonus, you don’t know Sengoku 3. The game reminds me of Radian Silvergun; on one level you’ve got the basic game (kill enemies), but for more advanced players there’s a second game-within-the-game (beat bonus). The scenery is not just for decoration: you have to use it during the downtime between enemy waves (when there’s nothing else to hit).

But if Sengoku 3 is like a classical symphony, SoR2 is like hip hop. The way the hitboxes interact in this game never ceases to amaze me. There’s so much to the game. Like: with Axel, combo out of one or two jabs into the burn knuckle, does more damage than if you do the third straight punch of his combo.

Ah goddamn man, I’m starting to think this is one of the most underrated genres ever. Also, the Capcom brawlers are definitely not my favourite. SNK and Sega ftw.

Following closely behind, I like a couple on the SNES. First up the Pirates of Blackwater one. You can tell it’s programmed by a bunch of talented guys who know and love the genre. And there’s a Sailor Moon one too (not S, I think it’s R). The funny thing about that one is that none of the characters can fight very well, except the big tall one with the throws. She also has an awesome bug where you can get her straight punch to hit twice and go into a sort of infinite loop (which isnt really cheap in this game).

Anyone got any other recommendations? Should be clear from the above what I like about this genre. :bgrin:

While the genre may seem like it’s near death… Those Koei Warriors (Samurai, Dynasty, Gundam, etc.) games are some of the closest things to a modern beatemup. While these seem pretty crappy they’re pretty fun two player. Also Beatdown: Fists of Vengeance is actually not too bad of a game. It tries to revive the genre but it also has a broken assed, boring as hell 1v1 mode which plays like a crappy 3-D fighter… Which it pretty much is. Guess which mode comes up the most often?

Now, the best modern take on the beatemup I’ve played would have to be Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes. At first it seems just like Samurai Warriors but then you actually try some more characters… They actually play different! In the Koei Warriors games everyone plays exactly the same but in Sengoku Basara you actually do different things for each character! Hard and Extreme mode have actual difficulty behind them and the combo system, while simple adds a lot. I highly recommend picking it up. It’s honestly fun as hell. The only problem is that the multiplayer is only in certain modes… But… The best modes have multiplayer so it’ll be fine.

Oi does anyone know the name of this oldschool arcade game that played something like (really old) Altered Beast in that you tried to get orbs and transformed into monsters (they were white orbs), but it had much better graphics and it was kinda dark.

I have such fond memories of it, but i can’t remember the name of it.

Godhand
Die Hard Arcade
Downtown Nekketsu

That oriental legends game seems kinda cool

The arcade version still not emulated

Yeah I played that, but I don’t think it’s higher than mid-tier.

Wtf is up with that. Some weird hardware or what? Maybe it’s better than the SNES version.

Still gotta love SoR2 man. Did a personal best the other day: on the MAME pseudo-arcade version I got up to the bomb-throwing bikers on board the ship of level 4 (or is it five), finally managed to get past Abadebe without losing a life.

I’ve definitely come to the conclusion Blaze is the best character, followed by Max and Axel.

Reasons:

  • fastest walking speed, excluding Skate’s dash
  • Versatile roundhouse kick at the end of her regular chain. Depending on your timing, Blaze can take a step forward when performing it, which can help you avoid Galcia’s who may have gotten behind you.
  • Great jumping moves: jump-straight up kick has massive priority, hit-area and power, jump forward has great range and her drop attack can consistently beat most uppercuts.
  • Throws rivalling Max’s. Although they do less power, her back-throw launches opponents the furthest distance of any grapple, and her backdrop is more powerful than Axel’s. Neutral slam sets enemy up in range of her strikes.
  • Weapon use again rivals Max. Has the furthest range with iron bars and swords and knife attacks can hit three times for decent damage.
  • Very reliable double-tap move. Not sure it’s better than Axel’s burnupper; instead of the invincibility he gets, Blaze hops off the ground. I dunno, all character’s double-tap moves are good (even Skate).
  • Reverse attack (jump+attack) hits both in front and behind.

Blaze trivia: in the Japanese version, there’s a panty shot frame for her jump-forward roundhouse!

Might make some vids of me playin this shit maybe.

ehehhe
I played Sor2 in dreamcast version (Sega smash pack)
but i only picked axel and max.
I played few times because in this version sega screwed sound.

I will pick this game again and check new frames
heheeh

blaze is in no way better than axel and max. it’s simply not debateable; and imo skate owns her ( play him like a speedy grappler NOT a combo character). blaze has the worst damage output in the game. She’s the most solid character, in the traditional beat’em up sense, but the other 3 outdamage the shit outta her for free – and this is SoR2 with two of the most overpowered characters in beat’emup history. once you know the enemy patterns and crap (for example, abadede can be cheesed in so many ways that it aint funny – he’s ridiculously easy to no-damage) then you’ll see the limitations of Blaze (DAMAGE). check the non-fighting game tiers thread for more info.

Agreed, although I actually feel Blaze is better then Skate, I fully agree on Axel and Max being the best in SoR2. Axel is completely overpowered in SoR2, that Grand Upper or whatever it’s called is stupid good.

SoR2 rocked, loved playing Axel and Max in that game.

I thought I was pretty good, these guys are insane. These videos are more impressive than the 1-life playthrough, because they show a complete mastery of the game.
