Scrolling Beatemups

Atb_555 - I doubt this is the game that you’re think’n of since you said 1 of 3 ninjas, but I thought of Ninja Spirit for Turbo Graphics and the arcade since you mentioned the rope. If I remember right, the game had a lot of different weapons available to use (I thought the rope weapon was especially dope to use), which helped to make it pretty damned good.

Keep Play’n. Peace

What does anyone think of the Punisher and Alien v.s Predator?

AVP was hella long but fun.

Both AVP and Punisher were pretty good games!

I’m most likely by myself on this one? But I loved Data East’s Bad Dudes “I’M BAD!” I also liked Gate of Doom and Wizard Fire as well! :woot:

Nah its not that game I’m afraid:sad: . You had 3 ninjas on the screen simulataniously, but this game (Ninja Spirit) looks pretty dope, will check it out. Good find!

YAY someone else played BAD DUDES! Man I loved that game so much!!! :lovin:

“I’m bad!!”

Yes Bad Dudes is in my classics for sure!! The Arcade and Amiga versions NOT the NES version!

The Punisher was hella good. The pistol made things broken tho. But still loads of fun. Much faster-paced than almost all of the other Capcom beat-em-ups.

Really sad to see nobody here has mentioned Vendetta for ARC… I still play that game to this day, it was the sequel to Crime Fighters. That game is omfg, the SHIT.

Streets of Rage 2 will always remain to be my favorite, along with Armored Warriors, don’t even try and sleep on that game, that’s the fastest Beat Em Up game I’ve ever played, intense as hell too.

EDIT: Yo, that fucking Streets of Rage 2 speedrun is fucking insane, and I thought I WAS GOOD in SOR2… now I got to try it with my man Axel on Maniac…

Vendetta is actually on one of those links I listed…but for the Arcade yes that is a good game!!!

Streets of Rage 2…I second you…so cool…and cool music back in the heyday…

Yeah it was :looney:! Heres a speedrun for TMNT2: Arcade game: http://speeddemosarchive.com/tmnt2.html

Sengoku III == best ninja 2D beat-em-up ever!

…done.

Life can be funny.
All day at work I was thinking of D&D, then BAM! This thread is here with some sick links.
Questions though…
Anyone know of a translation of that site or know a place in english that has some good explanation of the characters and all that other jazz that site (in the first post) is loaded with.

I’d recomend watching some of the Emu replays m8, U’ll be able to pic p a fair bit from just watching. And you can gleam some good stuff on the old FAQ’s here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/coinop/arcade/game/563201.html
I know a great player in the UK who is very good and knowlegeable abt DOD SOM, I hope he starts posting at SRK one day…
Starting this thread was kind of a hope people would be posting some good info on scrolling beatemups, but its just turned into another one sentence name dropping thread. Pls people lets try to make an effort.

Gate of Doom (or Dark Seal where I come from) is a fantastic little game. I always loved the spell system, so many options, tho the lightning spitting cloud was a favourite. I recently found out that Middlekick used to play this too, I think we both initialy played the Wiard coss of her powerful flame but I deffo think its the bard who is the best. His rate of fire is so high, its just like a solid hitbox. The knight is purely a begginer character, that 360 arc takes out stuff without aiming, might be usefull in a team game tho. What do you think?

Crayfish.

If anyone wants to discuss Final FIght, Punisher or X-Men I can post up some good info. IIRC Crayfish is very knowledgable in FF as well so I’m sure he can contribute as well.

I agree with the name dropping, kinda boring, eh?
Anyways…
Like certain characters in fighting games, a main part of the offense is trying to land a single strong move. I’ve been working on that with the theif in DnDSOM. Back Stab! So good (just like in PnP DnD).
Just some basic stuff right now, but…
Qcf+Jump (slide) into Back Stab has been working well for me.
Backdashing is another fun and fancy way to get this done. Basic attempt is to simply go back-turned then Jump~Jump or Attack~Jump to backdash behind and then backstab.
Combining these has been the most fun. Simpler/easy enemies fall for the slide all the time. But others will quickly turn around and attack. So Slide into Backdash into Backstab is super flashy and works on certain enemies.
I’m new to the game, so a lot of stuff may seem ambiguous, but later, as I get better, my strats will get more specific.
Thanks for the link (duh! Gamefaqs, how could I be so absent minded).

Xmen 8 player…shoot up please!!

K here some Streets of Rage 1 input, even if nearly anyone knows this anyway …
**
Axel:**

  • he got a short j. attack ark, the attack is also pretty slow, only usefull against some Bosses or to make some room if 3 armed guys or so are coming your way IMHO, it works well against axe and flamestick thrower guys, as long as they don’t throw their stuff of course

  • Axel got a 4 hit attack chain (2 jabs, a gut punch then kick), you can stop after the third hit and wait a split second, then continue again the first 3 hits, this inf works on all normal chars until they die, but not bosses or the later coming old boss chars in a normal stage (like the boomerang guys for example)

  • his attack button+jump button gives a backfist which knocks down, usefull if you got a guy in front of you in the inf and someone sneaks up behind you, the backfist is fast, so you can continue the inf afterwards or do whatever else

  • Axel got a shoulder throw after grabing an opponent from the front with b+attack button (if Axel faces right), usefull in the outdoor elevator part of a stage, to kill opponents fast in throwing them out of the house, or any other place with holes and when you need some space to breath

  • he got also a huge damage neckbreaker while grabing the opponent then pressing the jump button and pressing the attack button afterwards

  • if you just walk up grab and then press 3 times the attack button, Axel will do 2 knee hits and give a headbutt, which knocks down

  • Axel has some good combos, like doing 2 jabs, the gut punch, then walk up grab, doing 2 knee attacks, press the jump button and do the neckbreaker

  • the standing jabs kill the Boss at the beach stage with ease, just start jabing like crazy ones he is a few steps before you

  • don’t try to throw the fat guys …

  • the 2 Blaze copies are IMHO his hardest enemy, it needs sometimes time like mad to finish them if your partner has no idea what to do, your jump attack will nearly never hit them and they evade normal attack chains very well, so try to walk up throw (2 knee hits then neckbreaker) after they try to jump in on you, Axel is fast in terms of walking speed

Some X-Men stuff:

-Character Rankings

  1. Nightcrawler

The best character hands down. His attacks are fast, he’s got a low kick combo that lets him duck under attacks and can hit three enemies at once (usually combos can only hit two at once, the third enemy will pummel you). He has the best flying kick in the game - comes out quickly, great range and quick landing recovery. Nightcrawler happens to be the shortest character as well, which means things like sentinel missiles won’t even touch him while he’s standing. Everyone else has to jump, move or get hit. Jump kick is okay, stays rather close to the ground which is nice. Oh and his mutant power is great too, not that anyone should rely on it to get through the game.

His only weakness is he has a short reach, which means he has to get close to start his combos, but his punch speed helps him out some.

  1. Storm

Longest attack and throw range out of all the characters, so she can take out most enemies even before they walk close enough to start attacking. Those two things alone make her #2. Mutant power is good too. I think hers will keep going as long as you can keep the tornado on screen.

Her flying kick (or in her case a dive attack) absolutely sucks. She takes forever to recover from it when she lands, which means you cannot use it to move around quickly and the only safe option Storm has in the air is to knock enemies down with the dive. She also has some trouble when enemies get in her face as her ground attacks are not the fastest, but that’s a problem for everyone except Nightcrawler.

  1. Dazzler

Dazzler is #3 because of her throw glitch. No one else has this. This comes in extremely handy for her when she has to take out multiple enemies quickly. Her punch attacks have decent range too, although they’re not the fastest either. Flying kick is decent, but not as good as Nightcrawler’s or Wolverine’s. Mutant power has good screen coverage.

  1. Wolverine

He doesn’t have as much range on his punch attacks as Storm or Dazzler, and that hurts him in close-range because his punching speed isn’t as fast as Nightcrawler’s. He does have another better punch combo, but you need to be at the right distance for it to come out. Good flying kick and the best jump kick in the game (stays out for the longest, unlike most other characters who kick once and are then vulnerable).

  1. Colossus

He’s got good speed on his punch attacks (about as good as Nightcrawler IIRC) and jump kick is okay, but he’s second last because his flying kick (in his case it’s a punch) has a weird arc to it which makes it harder to use well. It makes him float in the air longer than he has to and timing gets harder. Also his throws are kinda useless. The headlock punch doesn’t clear away other enemies and the extra hits are a totally useless feature. His other throw does clear enemies but is hard to get consistently.

  1. Cyclops

Poor Cyclops. Next to no range for his punch attacks, and a mutant power that just plain sucks. I think the only things he has going for him are a nice kick combo (at correct distance) and a combo ender (the spin kick) that can also hit opponents behind him.

Wow, really good shit guys…when I get my Premium acct I will be sure to rep you guys!!

I just played Cadillacs and Dinosaurs just recently and that game was fun as hell.

I did’nt know Capcom was capable of releasing such a violent game back then. (Speaking of which, was the original series anything like the Capcom game?)

Ahh, I’m glad there is a scene for recording game footage in Japan for these games! Sengoku 3 is my personal favourite.

Edit: lol ok, enough with the name dropping, time to drop some S3 science…

I play as Falcon because I originally found his two specials most useful but now I’m having second thoughts. His dashing flame-uppercut super is starting to turn into a bit of a liability as I’m getting later into the game in one credit. The lag on it wasnt a problem early in the game, when you face the regular badguys, but once you start facing the advanced versions of the regulars (who throw moves as soon as you’re in range) you start getting punished. Either you have to take down all opponents onscreen with it, make sure you are out of range of any enemies you won’t hit, or you have to be lucky and hope they hit you either too soon (during invincibility) or too late (allowing you to jab them out of it).

I’m now using Falcon to get to stage 4 and then switching to the female ninja boss (I’ll check up on the names and use them in future posts). Her equivalent special is much quicker and safer, but her fireball doesnt hit behind her like Falcon’s does. Still, I’m thinking that’s a price worth paying.

Any thoughts on character tiers in Sengoku 3? Would you agree with my assesment of Falcon?
