Sagat Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

I have a vid saved of bonchan destroying an ibuki player. He uses a few of Sagat’s set up’s that new players including me would benefit from learning including the cr.lk/cr.hp set up . I’ll throw it up in the vids section today with inputs on if I get time.

Hi all,

Casual Sagat player here trying to improve my game against my friends/online. Not at the level of option selects, karas and other more advanced techniques yet.

I know a couple of people have mentioned the outdated matchup guides, can anyone give me both strategy/tactics against Ryu, Ken & Akuma? These are the only characters my mates play >.>

Also:
-which ‘zone/space’ is best for me, how to get there, and what to do when there?
-when they jump in (assuming I didn’t already TU/st.HK) with standard j.HK, cr.lk, cr.lk, cr.hk rubbish, is there a space after their ‘trip’ for me to punish? Note at this point they also might throw a random fireball/TU.
-is there any solid cross-ups I can use or as a general rule just don’t jump in at all vs them?

I guess our group is very scrubby but I’m just looking to find holes in their one-dimensional games and improve my own - appreciate any tips.

Utilize your normals better. If they routinely throw out random uppercuts, just wait for them and punish. The best range to be in would be full screen. Keep in mind that of those three, ken has the slowest fireball and the easiest to jump in at. If you jump in and hear them mashing, just do one normal like a cr medium punch and wait for them to mash out an uppercut and punish.

  • If they autopilot into c.hk and you block it, punish heavily. Especially Ryus. Depending on the spacing you have various options.
  • Don’t jump in their wakeup, all 3 have 3F DPs. Cross-up j.lk can be used sparingly for mixups with empty jumps and c.lk/tick throw but you don’t put them in a lot of blockstun like good crossups do, so be careful.

What is the best way to train defense with Sagat? Just play more? I have this weird mentality that once my opponent gets in, I feel hopeless like Dhalsim players in the corner. Sure he has an uppercut, but seriously.

And how important is it to learn how to space Tiger Knees? (As in to hit near the tip to get frame advantage)

cr.lp is 3 frames and can be buffered into tiger shot or linked into cr.lp xx TU. far s.lk has great range. Far s.mk beats most lows and is really hard to whiff punish. There. I just made your Sagat twice as good.

It’s not THAT important, but on hit it often combos the whole TK. So it makes your frame traps better. Also it builds meter and pushes your opponent to the corner.

How do you get Sagat to ultra towards the opposite side if you dp him in front of the corner? It’s a little hard to explain with words, so here’s a video of what i’m talking about

Im interested in this too have been looking around there seems to be no info on it

The way to pull this off is to do the Uppercut and FADC and HOLD the FA until it is charged to lv.2. Then dash and to Ultra in the same way you dashed in and that is it.
P.S. - if you want a shortcut to do this you can also FADC and qcfx2 to input your dash, and then one more qcf to complete the Ultra. Be careful to release the buttons upon seeing the dash or you run the risk of neg edging into some random special.

Hope this helps cause that glitch is pretty frustrating when u need the damage.

that’s what i found so far but if that’s the correct way to do it seems pretty difficult hope it helps

Simple Q: what are some of the best uses of cr.hp?

I don’t use this normal for —t and I probably should. I guess I can use it to punish people who backdash on wakeup… what are some other good uses for it?

You can counter hit and cancel into TU. It’s not that hard as you have a bit of time to confirm. Just look for the CH flash when your throwing it out.

Use it as a poke. Goidni damage and pushback

cr.hp has a really good hurtbox. It’s really hard to whiff punish.

I get Kara DP when I try to Kara TS.

fw+hk > d,df,f

Is there an alternate method?

You will never…EVER get a kara TS if you try to do it raw from step roundhouse

This has been said many times. The only way that works is if done when one TS is lon screen but just leaving it so when you do qcf hk and then hk again as the the first shot is leaving Sagat will do a high step kick at first because the shot is still there and you can only have one on screen at a time, but when you hit hk again the shot has left so the step kick turns into a kara TS.

You can ONLY do a raw kara ts with low step kick.

Is Sagat’s kara focus dash cancel useful?.

Also, is it possible to Kara DP on wake up?

Does anyone know how many invincibility frames dp has? Also, how would I find out this information on my own? Is there some way of finding out from the frame data?

http://wiki.shoryuken.com/Super_Street_Fighter_IV/Sagat

You can throw someone from half screen for laughs/gimmicks. Otherwise… not really worth the meter?

The kara uppercut is really just a f.hk cancelled into an uppercut before the f.hk attack comes out. So if you do a f.hk on wakeup, you won’t have any invincibility and you’ll get stuffed. tl;dr: no.

So frames 1-5 are invincible, but how did they arrive at that?
