Sagat Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

I don’t main Sagat , but I play him quite heavily as a secondary.

My initial thoughts are Sagat’s going to do extremely well against the twins. It’s a definite zoning match, but there’s no need to panic up close. Standing HK will beat clean dive kicks on reaction, and standing medium or light shuts down a lot of their close pressure. It’s not practical for the twins to palm meter as Sagat has EX tiger shots. I’ve been saving my meter for those as they also shut down the lunges. Yang’s dp is very slow, you can again TU this or just block depending on if your timing your shots right. There’s no need to leave the ground in these matches, not that I’ve experienced. If you feel they might command throw, cr-jab is a good counter. From a distance, you might want to mix it up with a neutral jump mk xx , it’ll keep those lunges/rekkas honest.

For your combo question, try using cr-mp from the lk as an alternative or you can do 3 lights, cr-mk - low TS. It’s not a proper block string, but any decent player wont mash in between those links as long as you don’t abuse it.

A better player may have more info, but try those for now.

Can anyone explain to me how to set Tiger Knee frame traps up? I’ve seen them mentioned lots but whenever I use TK I always seem to be heavily negative on frames.

You have to space the knee where only the last part hits for it to be even relatively safe

So are +ve frame Tiger Knees gone since SFIV or can you still do them?

what is the joke about sagat and cornflakes? and where did it come from?

is it from this

got to 5:40

Does anyone know the exact frame advantage on a properly spaced LK Tiger Knee? Possibly MK knee as well since it seems like it has advantage sometimes, though it might be my eyes playing tricks on me.

Lk knee perfect spacing is +1. mk knee is +0.

Thanks, guess I’ll need to go into training mode and practice the timing on cr.LP. One more question (okay, a few questions): if MK Knee is +0, and you do a perfectly timed cr.LP (which comes out in 3f), does it…

…work as a frame trap against characters that don’t have a 3f normal?
…blow up crouch teching if their cr.LK isn’t 3f?
…stuff or trade with a 3f normal such as Yang’s cr.LK?

Is there an easy way to do OS: cr.LK -> L.TS -> cr.LK? I usually get cr.LK linked to L.TS or TK (bad)

It is easy to do with characters like Fei’s cr.LK -> rekka -> cr.LK, Yun’s cr.LK -> lunge punch, but Sagat is really hard (because of it’s 5 frame recover and 5 frame start up?)

edit+ I am looking for an answer for wake-up back dashes. I usually answer with meaty cr.lk -> a special move.

  1. Yes.
  2. Yes, but only if they mashed it. If they late tech they just block.
    3). Trade.

Thanks again EmblemLord. I think I’ll just try to learn hit confirm counter hit cr.LP since it’ll leave a little room for error on my part.

Any tips with TK spacing? I’ve been playing more Sagat lately and I was wondering if there’s a block string that Sagat players would do to make sure their TKs are spaced safely.

when is it good to pick ult2? only time i pick it so far is for blanka.

I’ve toyed around with Sagat for a while, but maybe I should get somewhat serious with him. With zoners, I like to play the patient style, where I just sit back and throw fireballs all day and only have a close-range fight if its absolutely necessary. Curious as to which notable Sagat players fit that mold so I can watch some video of them.

I’m having quite a bit of trouble canceling Sagats clp into tiger upper with clk, clk, clp xx tiger upper

I’m using a fightpad right now, just wondering if anyone has any useful tips on making this easier

There are so many posts about this link on this thread, its not even funny.

Just do your combo while you’re in down forward, and use the short cut motion for the uppercut.

Pretty much essential for the Sagat mirror. I like it against Bison for the headstomp shenanigans, only because that move pisses me of. Usefull for full screen punishes (from an EX shot) against Ryu, I prefer Ultra 1 against Ken though as he loves to push buttons close up and you can blow him up.

When you press lp, go from downforward , to down, to downforward + HP, like a little wiggle, easier on stick, not sure about pad.

Pretty simple question, am I a total scrub if I do TK and TU’s with the normal input(forward>qcf K/P)? I just found out about going downforward>downforward instead and my super comes out every once in awhile. I just feel like legit df>df is impossible, my input display shows me hitting down and right even when I focus on just hitting df. On a square gate, is it even possible to just hit diagonal alone?

Another question, I’m still practicing FADCing out of stuff, when I do get a successful TU>FADC>TU the second one misses. Is there some things that just don’t connect or is my timing off?

Last one, is there any simple tricks out there I should know about? My friend just told me about buffering and the shortcut for TU. These small tips are hard to come by but they really do help

You can’t hit another TU after an FADC, unless you do the angry scar first.
