Sagat Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

How can you use his tiger knee safely in blockstings in SSF4? It’s been done to me a few times but I can’t replicate it. Hell most of my TK combos whiff now haha

FINALLY ALLOWED TO POST IN HERE, IGNORE EARLIER THREAD

I was going to post this in one of the sticky threads but my browser keeps glitching when I try to open it.

So I started using Sagat in Super and enjoyed the Character quite a bit. I started off terrible but now I’d say I have an above average Sagat(but still have a long way to go).

I have a lot of match ups down and actually look forward to facing the Ryu’s, Dictators, Boxers, Chun, Dhalsim(not that I enjoy it, but I do enjoy the strategy of coming from behind…thats what she said) and Rufus’ of the street fighter world.

However, a few match ups where I might as well forfeit before it starts is against El Fuerte and Viper.

El Fuerte is just my pimp. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve had him down to a last pixel of health and he gets me with a knock down and I choke. When I get hit by his loop it truly demoralizes me haha. However it’s on my wake up where he really phacks me. A good Fuerte could beat me perfect if they get the first knock down. Other than ‘guessing right’ is there any thing you do to get out of the mind phack? What frustrates me is when his slide avoids my Focus Attack.

Viper, I mostly have a tough time with her wake up tricks as well and not knowing what to do against her cr.ST into thunder knuckles. The thing is I don’t play that many Vipers so when I do I look like I’m playing on a 360 pad.

Lastly, my combos have become MUCH better. cr.lk is the greatest thing of all time  I just need to improve on my zoning(which isn’t terrible). Sometimes I don’t know if I can squeeze out a TU if some one jumps over my upper or lower shot(I almost typed shit) and what would be the ideal distance?

One Bison player by the name of NWRPWDY or something LOL on Xbox Live actually gave me some great Sagat tips and told me to post here as well. And he was AMAZING with Bison

was playing casuals last night, wanting to expand on the variety of characters (see my signature), I decided to give sagat a try.

When I started playing, I blanked out completely when my frined kept coming at me with blockstrings and I had no idea what to do… I don’t see any videos with a sagat in defence because usually they are able to get them out of the way and can start zoning with TS’s, my friend is an impatient player and i clearly forget to mix up TS timing, he easily just jumps over all the TS and already he’s back in. I know i can TU as an anti air but honestly i’ve got a slow reaction under pressure. what normals can i hit in hopes that i can get them out of dropped links? cr.lk or cr.lp?

What are some good pressure tactics and block strings?

Is it possible to kara tiger shot with f.lk and a negative edge?

Depending on what character your friend was using will dictate a lot of what your wake up options are so check out the matchup thread. One note about fireball is spacing. Like you said if you don’t mix up shots, you become predictable and opponents will have no trouble jumping or focusing your fireballs and getting in on you. So answer 1) Mix up fireballs. Fake them out to by mixing in a few standing or crouching jabs example: HP.HTS, LP.HTS, st.LP, st.LP, HP.LTS. Also Low shots have higher recovery time so be aware of that when laying down your tiger obstacle course. Play around and find where the fireball danger zone is (basically where it’s easy for an opponent to jump over shots and get in.)

Answer 2) if you play a defensive Sagat, you have to learn to be patient and wait for windows for counters if someone gets in on you. If he knocks you down are you using quick getup? (press lp+lk when you land.) That gives your opponent less time to plan their mixup game when you wake up. Again depending on who you are fighting your best option could be to simply wake up and crouch block (watch out for jump in or overheads) or wake up Option Select (Down back, lp+lk). Don’t spam this on wakeup, there is a window to hit it correctly. Another defensive option is to neutral jump or jump back on wake up.

cr.lp is a good option for poking as it’s fast but again do not spam it. Tiger uppercut is your friend for reversals and counters, go to practice mode and set the dummy to record and input a jump in attack. See how many times you can TU Anti-Air. This training helped me a lot with reaction time. (Remember you can shortcut DF,D,DF Punch to TU.) Last thing: if you have someone that is always trying to jump over you on wakeup, try inputing 32123 + lp, it should auto direction correct a straight up TU when you wake up. (try to delay the LP just a little.) Anyway I hope this is kinda what you are looking for.

shadrender: You asked me a question in a pm so I’ll answer it here. Yes, I double tap my buttons. Habit from ST/HDR. Yes, it’s to make sure my specials/super/ultra come out.

Against characters that don’t have fireballs, zone them with fireballs, anti-air when they jump in. In general, if you score a knockdown, you can keep pressure with a meaty cr.lk (watch this on shotos for a wakeup SRK), depending on if it hits or not you can either combo, start a block string, go for a throw, mix up into an overhead, etc. Block strings are all over this forum but one I use is cr.lk cr.lk cr.mk xx LTS or TK (decent chip and good pushback for LTS, keep pressure with TK). Another basic one is cr.lk cr.lk cr.lp. Look on youtube for sunset01 vs YHCMochi. If you want some Tiger rushdown, that’s what you should look at.

I played with that a bit last night I got a lot more consistency online with fireballs. Thanks!

TK frame data question.

Event hubs has TK on block 10, 13, 18, -1. But what is the frame data if there is only 1 hit? Is he + or 0 frames? Trying to understand what my punishes are as Rog, Gief and Sim. Well Gief can u1 on EX but other than that seems totally safe. From what i understand he’s supposed to me more vulnerable but i cant even seem to get a jab out in time.

You mean EX TK? Generally there is such forward momentum on EX TK and due to 3 hits Sagat will almost always be around -1 if his opponent blocks it standing. If they block it crouching he is at +4 since the third hit won’t strike until a bit later due to a lower hitbox and Sagat is now closer to recovery frames. If Sagat did space it and only the third hit connected then he’s probably around +2/+3.

You can’t punish unless you are a grappler. Or playing a char with a 1 frame Super and you must be block it high.

What about non EX TK’s. Spaced where only the last hit connects… Is there frame data on that?

Again it depends entirely on when it hits. But when spaced right you really can’t punish. The frame disadvantage is just dependent on the spacing. You will need to train your eyes to see when you can punish and when you can’t.

Now that… i didn’t know. Awesome stuff

So guys , what’s your secret to always hit U1 after an EX TU?

For me it’s mostly visual , i sorta of got the timing right noting on the character’s height and when right before sagat is landing. But i still only hit 3/5…

Any secrets out there?

Practice mode is the ultimate secret.

Doesn’t the opponent just have to be above Sagat’s head to hit with the ultra after an EX TU?

I also thought that certain characters it was simply not doable due to fall speeds/animation etc…
