Sagat Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Claw is absolute shit in the corner. No amount of playing changes facts.

not with your TK traps gone. now im free to hold down back as much as i want with out being scared of chip damage as much, although i cant hold down back all day as well. all i got to fear is pushing a button with you frame trapping me, but then again i dont push buttons when im in block stun.

I wasn’t talking about vs Sagat. I meant by design Claw is weak to rushdown and therefore is even weaker in the corner when pressured.

And I don’t need TK to trap someone. Ever heard of a frame trap with normals?

Yeah, I’m old school.

hence why i said i dont worry about it because i dont push my buttons while in block stun, i try my absolute best to make sure my opponents side of the screen doesnt say counter hit.

and yes vega is weak to rushdown, and its very hard to get some one off you unless you know how Vega’s FA, and ST works, eventhen its hard. seriously though i need to get a copy of SSF4 for my PS3 and play you, heard you are really good.

and i added you booty.

Don’t stress yourself. I don’t play Sagat really anymore.

If the wall dive attacks are done while you are not grounded, j.MP, j.MK, and j.HP take care of them. In general, wall dive attacks have an awful recovery in this game, and as long as you know where the Claw player will land on the screen, you can punish him severely. For example, if he lands close to you, you can kara an HP Tiger Uppercut / HK Tiger Knee for the punish. You can actually punish a wall dive anywhere on the screen with U2. You can also focus the wall dive attack (but not the throw) and go for a punish. However, smart Claw players will rarely use wall dive attacks unless you are grounded. The fundamental strategy in this match up is to zone with fireballs during the early period of the round, but respect his mid range game. The key is to knock him down and apply pressure starting with a safe jump j.HK or a meaty cr.LK. Basically, if either option hits, hit-confirm and finish the combo and then rinse and repeat the scenario, which works best in corners. If either option does not hit, apply a string based on Tiger Shots, Tiger Knees, or frame traps using normal attacks. This match up has become harder for Sagat because of the watered down damage and increased recovery frames on Tiger Knees, which used to wreck Claw in vanilla.

Also, to whoever asked, Mago is using Fei Long as his primary character at the moment. He thinks Sagat is a mid tier character in SSFIV. Joe switched from Sagat to another character (Chun Li?) at Evo2k10 in his last match before he was eliminated if I recall correctly. And EmblemLord’s PSN comment says “bout to drop Sagat”. Sagat players have no idols at the moment, LOL.

dont tell him that, that is the worst advice you can give him. If i see that my opponeet does jb/f.hp im just going to wait half a second more and grab you after your active frames are gone. Best bet is nj.HK, or delayed TU. also you forget that thanks to Vega’s walk speed, your fireball game is more limited on how much pressure you can apply, he can walk foward, slide under fireballs as well. so you can, but its very difficult, to force a jump.

But yes you want to knock down Vega. if you meaty him and he likes to OS tech use a string that punishes that. if he late techs then go for the grab or block string. And be careful with TK strings. You can Ultra 2 on reaction. not only that be careful becaue Vega can be buffering the Ultra 2 motion to punish you. Also when pressureing with block strings be careful because ST, can and will punish you for using the wrong block strings on him. Cornering helps, but he can get out, but if you do it right you can make him eat a lot of things. But dont count him out, VEga does ridicioulus damage of 1 bar fast and he can land two 35% damage combo’s withing 5-10 seconds.

good games booty, you really made me respect Sagat’s cr.lk on my wake up.

For sure… Best vega I’ve played on XBL. I learned a lot and you helped me out with probably my least comfortable match up. I’ll hit you up for another set pretty soon.

I can get it to come out randomly by mashing, but what is the technically correct way to execute sagats fake kick?

are you on a stick or pad? im on a pad and can fake kick consecutively, its kk pretty fast, you want to tap the the second kick almost immediately after the first one using two different buttons of course, if your on a stick i would assume you could for the vmost part kind of slide your hand from kick to kick fast

you can apply the same idea to a pad. it’s actually easier to do on a pad in my opinion

im thinking of picking up Sagat. Is he hard to learn? How are his footsies? I dont have a stick ATM, how does he do on 360? For record i think Bison terrible on 360 and i wont play him, but i can tolerate Chun. Still sucks though. If Sagat gets gayed hard like Bison i wont pick him up until i get my stick

Im on a pad, I’ve finished the trials so I don’t have any real execution limitations.

So can I cancel with any kick or does it have to be cancelled with a hard kick/roundhouse/whatever?

Can I use my all 3 kicks trigger macro button to cancel?

Used Sagat yesterday, and I want O.Sagat back because he’s fucking Sagat.

What do I do against Vega’s who spam wall dive, if I get them cornered I win but its so fucking hard and I can’t always do it. If I FA the wall dive I get Izuna dropped, if I dash I get hit with his claws, if I uppercut they wiggle above my head and it goes the wrong way and I get Izuna dropped, if I go air to air with him I get Izuna dropped…WTF???

Dealing with izuna loop can be tough. You have to watch closely to see what they are going to do. If they are directly over you, you are likely getting thrown. So delay your lp TU as late as you can. if they are going off center, just block and punish. You can try a jumping attack every once in a while, but if you get too predictable, you will suffer. The only jumping attack I do on any regular basis, is if I have them close to the wall and they try it, I’ll pin them in with a J HP. Otherwise, you just have to anticipate, watch, and react.

thanks, I have more trouble with this matchup than any other so far tbh… I will try to delay my TU as much as possible now. Would dashing around a little or using f+lk to move a little be an option to make it harder for him to figure out exactly how to get straight over my head?

Doubt it… it’d likely just land him a counter hit and score more damage and stun

im a lot better with sagat now after some practice but why do people go with ultra 2 instead of 1? the 1st one seems like a game changer if used at the right time while the 2nd maybe will be an extra TU worth of damage hehe

it closes some characters options. That is good.

As for izuna loop, the only consitent answer is late TU. anything else is a guessing game.

edit btw Ultra 2 is match up dependent.
