Safe to assume DLC for MvC3?

Err…so why can’t they play without the DLC again? Nothing’s forcing them to download it OR play against someone who has it…

=/

The ONLY forced DLC is FREE DLC. Other times, as with Phantasy Star Universe, you need to pay to play online separately from XBL/PSN. That isn’t forced, but you still cannot access that portion of the game until you do. You can still enjoy the game offline. This usually doesn’t even apply to most games nowadays anyway. Just maps, characters, etc.

“I don’t want to pay but I also don’t want to feel like I"m missing out”.

… I should really stop even looking at this thread >>

And like coming out with a disc based released isnt milking the cow either? DLC or disc based either one is going to come out your wallet.
Also why are people scared that an overpowered character might comeout of a DLC? Last time i checked the same situation can occur through a disc based release as well. Zero in tvc UAS, a disc based released which had zero replace Karas as the god tier character. So an overpowered character is always possible regardless if the come in dlc or not. And i doubt capcom is going to make character as overpowered as the big 4. Now those guys are the kings and Queen of God tier status. As long as that doesnt happen im fine.
GO DLC!!!

Well then they’re screwed.

No, then it’s just your fault. It’s a choice. Deal with it. >_>

They’re giving you an option for new content for a price. Don’t want to pay, too bad. That’s like saying “I want the game, but fuck paying for it”. They have the right to do it and you have the right to reject.

And like a disc based release isnt milking the cow either? Regardless ifs dlc or not its going to cost you. Also in regards to people saying that dlc might risk leading to an overpowered character, what about a disc release? Even in a disc release capcom is taking a risk of making an overpowered character, heck in most sequels to most fighting games there is always that risk of an overpowered character. Tvc:uas is a good example, zero was disc based and he replaced karas as the new god tier, so the fact that an overpowered character may come via DLC is no different from an overpowered character that may come via disc. As long as the new characters arent overpowered like the big four in mvc2, im fine, not to mention the fact that i doubt capcom is ever going to make a character from this point on in mvc3 that’s going to be broken like those four were.

Plus there are demanded characters like ghost rider and gene that didnt make the cut so im already looking forward to dlc. Heck i wont be surprised if capcom saves the good ones for dlc. Plus the roster is too small, even if mvc2 was copy and pasted.

The fact that you have no way of knowing who has it before you play them is what’s forcing you to play people who have it.

Imagine ih8sentinel running into people who bought sentinel.

"Wtf? He bought sentinel?"
rage quit
"Wtf? Another robot?"
rage quit

The whole idea is even worse than a no assist mode because of the inherent lack of regulation.

…which doesn’t matter because the disc released character was already included in your purchase. You’re not at a forced disadvantage simply because you didn’t want to pay more for the game than you already paid.

BJ, the problems you address can be fixed easy by including a DLC Yes/No clause for the host rules.

And a disc release makes it worse for the user because in most cases it kills the chance of people getting online play anymore. SFIV and Blazblue 1st both are pretty empty right now, so you are forced to buy the new disc if you want to continue playing the game online.

That’s actually a fairly solid point and if I may add to it, people don’t mind DLC as much as going out and buying a new game that is largely the same.

Sure. But I think that the presence of a DLC yes/no switch is hardly guaranteed. I’m going to guess that we won’t get one, but there’s really no way to know.

Even then, if you want to compete, you’re not going to have the option of ignoring the DLC.

Yeah and that’s just how comp fighting games work. You need to have money for a stick or a entry fee. You need money for the game and the system and the DLC and the sandwich you eat at the venue.

Besides the game desperately needs DLC anyway popular characters like Ghost Rider and demanded ones like Phoenix Wright and Gene didnt even make the cut but some crappy ones did so im already looking forward to DLC. DLC!DLC! plus a roster of 30+ is too small for a game such as this even if mvc2 was just copy and paste.

Plus you’ll get the characters faster via DLC instead of waiting for capcom to make an upgraded edition, figure out who makes the cut, make the game, plan all this crazy crap then ship the game in order to get it. DLC is simplier and faster than making a disc release.

The game doesn’t desperately need anything character-wise.

Really? They do? Can you show me a game outside of Blazblue that requires you to purchase DLC to compete? I’d like to see where you gathered this data. Specific examples please. The rest of those “points” are totally erroneous. You have the choice of not purchasing food.

You gotta eat eventually. The point being there are costs to competing in the fighting game sommunity. DLC is becoming one of those things. You can still chose not to buy most of those things but they still give you advantage. Just because DLC isn’t a pysical object doesn’t mean that it’s not a valid expectation for competiton. You are free to enter a tourney without owning the game at all.

Since it’s most likely that the game will have DLC, I believe a better discussion would be how is should be implemented as to not disrupt the competitive community any further. At the very least I can say that the way Arc/Aksys are doing things with BB:CS isn’t the way to go. If anything, any new characters should come as part of a downloadable “expansion.” Kinda like being able to upgrade from CE to HF but via download instead of buying a new board. At the same time however, they should make it so that those who don’t buy the DLC can still play against those who did buy it.

A ‘better’ discussion? Capcom isn’t going to read this at all.
And fuck ‘should,’ Capcom will go with the exact same plan. It’ll be individual characters for download (or possibly pairs, but I doubt this), and everybody else gets a mandatory update patch so that we can play against them. We will all download the characters, we will pay to be able to choose them. If it makes you feel better, you can call the eventual “buy a bunch of characters at once” option an ‘expansion.’

People keep bringing up stuff like, “but what if we could choose!” and “what if it was all, like, $1!” Really? It won’t happen.

The only good side to this, from a competitive point of view, is that Capcom isn’t going to go the Freemium/Farmville route and start selling Sentinel for $80. “Hey, it’s your choice! You don’t have to buy him.” stomp stomp stomp stomp The clear effect of DLC characters for a fighting game is that those who want to compete will have to pay more money for a complete roster, and tournament organizers will be inconvenienced. The amount extra they will have to pay is most likely going to be in the $10 - $40 range, and probably in the middle of that range.

If you are posting here that you are in favor of DLC because maybe you can get Ghost Rider, and you looove Ghost Rider, what are you even doing here. This is a board for fans of fighting games, not marvel characters. I just don’t get it.

I also reject that 'like everything else, you get to choose whether to buy it or not. If you like it, buy it; if not, don’t." Because while it is true, it is trivially so. That part is obvious, and it should not even be part of the discussion. People are discussing what they would like and what they would not like, and some people are saying they would like to buy a game with no DLC available for it. It is not something that Capcom is going to sell to us, but as long as we’re discussing what would make a better game, it’s reasonable to ask for.

If your position is the more reasonable ‘why are we having this discussion when it’s already been decided,’ well, OK. But then you don’t need to post here, right?

EDIT: RARRRGH

Shadowless, the alternative would be to go to one of the 1.73 million other threads that have been made to complain about DLC.

They’re all actually the same, you know.

What’s wrong with being a fan of both? MvC isn’t just a fighting game; it’s also the ultimate fan service game. The characters are very faithful representations of their portrayals in whatever movie/comic/game they are in. MvC actually lets you feel like you are playing the movie/comic/game version of your character in a fighting game. For some people, that’s the best of both worlds.

If you are a fan of a certain character, and you believe that character would be a worthy fighter within the confines of MvC3’s game mechanics, why wouldn’t you hope he/she gets added?

Yeah pretty much.
This is one of those 1.73 million threads, though, or it was by the time I posted in it.
I guess the answer to the actual thread question is: yes. That is safe to assume.

I’m the only one who would pay for Rogue in MvC3?

lol I miss her
