I have a visible erection from the possibilities engendered from DLC characters and other out of band roster updates. If you lived in Seattle and had to face that all day, you too would be willing to wear a little white lipstick if it meant the game evolving past Sentinel 300% combos.
I know several prominent players in the community who were/are homeless. Again, needing to buy characters like that is drawing blood from those people. Waiting for the discounted “everybody together!” pack means that certain players might get left behind. If you go to a ghetto tourney, can you not use Shuma/Jill/Amingo if the tourney organizer can’t afford it? It’s weird. New ground.
Speaking as someone who was dirt-poor in college, you can easily play on one pilfered quarter all day. If you lose, you might need to wait for someone else to have to go and then you can play their game out. Otherwise: you need to win. Do that.
This is how you can, and I did, play the game all day in the arcade for a quarter. Heck with UMK3 there’s actually a reset (pick the ermac fight, mercy him but don’t touch him) so that if you beat the game while waiting for an opponent you get to start the game at the beginning without needing to drop another precious quarter.
They’re clearly aiming for new markets here, but --hey have a heart peeps.

I believe that you’ll be able to play against any character even if you cannot select them (online at least). So, as long as the online isn’t totally butt, you can learn the matchup.
DLC, especially if it isnt cheap, is going to be a problem for the competitive community. I agree. But I’m also willing to do whatever is needed to work through it (as a tournament director). The future comes with some good and some bad.

Everything has it’s ups and downs. The game will be able to evolve in more ways than one this way. We won’t know if it’s for better or worse until the time comes and by then workarounds will be found.

PS: Sure feel for people that are actually having money problems, but ‘homeless, but own a console and internet and are planning to use it to be good at MvC3’ has to be a vanishingly tiny group of people, there are some serious contradictions in there 
We can sympathize, but in no way should Capcom build their model towards those people. Most of the people complaining here can afford the cost of DLC, they just feel insulted that they “have” (fingerquotes) to pay it.

Edit: I still bet that capcom will have some sort of arrangement with any Major tournament to get them all their DLC characters for free. Its’ only in the company’s best interest to do so.
Edit again: That’s something somebody should ask in an interview (preferably somebody with some name recognition): * “How will you integrate DLC with tournament organizers?”*
You always have the option of going over and playing at somebodies house, FOR FREE, something that was never available and was surely cheaper than the magical “find a quarter and be good enough to stay on a machine for the whole day, assuming you’re playing one version of a game that has a glitch to let you always play versus the cpu and reset it while you wait for opponents, all while magically accumulating the knowledge to beat these characters you’ve never played and are trying to learn against” : P
Yeah, I think the DLC option isn’t going to cause any top players to have any issue whatsoever, it’s nowhere near the level of money that people are used to shelling out to get good
Sorry but if anybody is homeless (or close to being homeless) the very LAST thing he should worry about is DLC cost. That person needs to get his priorities straight. He needs a real job. Roof over your head > DLC.
That goes the same for people paying $15+ tournament entry fees. If you can afford to pay that much to enter a tournament (and end up being a pot monster anyway) then you can afford DLC.

a very cogent point. it’s why i never married myself to one company, one franchise or one dimension (ie: 2d vs 3d). always have a Plan B because every FG company lays a turd every so often.
true, they do milk their franchises to death, but i don’t recall putting in an extra token to play the boss characters when, for example, CE dropped. which would have been the closest thing to a character DLC in those days.

I do with my closet friends. We setup an account just for gamesharing alone. Only an idiot would do it using their personal account.
