Thanks, for the videos, great help. Looking forward to more.
anyways, great videos mickey!
great job mickey i learnt way more from this than watching hundreds of Ryu matches. THANK YOU!!!
Mickey, I’d like to learn the difference between chains, links and 2 in 1s.
As I understand it from searching chains are normal moves strung together. The timing isn’t too strict on these.
2 in 1s are normal moves cancelled into specials. For example crouching mk > hadouken. I don’t have problems with these.
Finally links. Links for me seem impossible. As far as I know links are a succession of normals and specials perfomed one after another. The timing for these are strict and I never seem to be able to a) identify which combos are in fact links and b) how to properly time them. I wish someone would clearly label and list some of Ryu’s more common link combos. I feel this is primarily what’s keeping me from becoming an advanced Ryu player.
If anyone else can help me with this in the meantime it would be much appreciated.
Thanks again Mickey’D. Awesome vids thusfar.
you can chain cr lp’s together with themselves, and cr lk’s with themselves… if you’re familiar with 2 in 1’s like crmk xx hadoken… then any combo that is not these 2 ^ are link combos…
example: cr mp into cr mp, or cr mp into cr mk. as far as i know, you can’t link specials.
the reason you’re having trouble with links is because they have very tight timing, some only giving you 1 frame windows of input (1/60th of a second)
don’t get mad you can’t get the link system right away, but instead realize that they are quite difficult until you learn the timing for them and just keep practicing
helpful tip: the proper timing to link one move into the previous one is to hit the button for the next move at the very last frame of the previous moves recovery
so if you wanted to do cr mp to cr mk (1 frame link)
you hold down on the joystick to stay crouching and hit mp, and watch ryu’s animation as he hits and recovers from this punch, at the very last moment of ryu’s animation for cr mp, hit mk and it will link…
it has to be slow enough to where you are waiting for the end of the animation, but not too slow to where it has completely recovered
A chain is any move in a combo that is done while the prior moves animation is still going, thereby stopping the previous move before it is finished and starting a new one. An example is hitting cr. lp as fast as possible for a 3 hit combo. A 2 in 1 is also a chain but it’s one that is specifically talking about cancelling a normal move into a special.
Links are combos in which one move is performed after the last move’s animation is completely over, but before the opponent is out of hitstun. Chains have a fairly big margin of error and are easier to perform, whereas links are very strict and must usually be done with a window of only 1 or 2 frames. Or 1/60th to 1/30th of a second. The timing of links must simply be learned by going into training mode and being practiced over and over. Me telling you that you have to hit cr. mp at 45/60th of a second isn’t going to help you. Go and practice and get a feel for it. I’ll give you one example. cr. lp, cr. lp, cr.lp, cr. mk xxx hadoken. The low punches connected to one another in that combo are chained, but the cr. mk is a link, and then the hadoken is a 2 in 1 (also a chain).
Good thread Mickey and good video. I liked the part on the momentum shift. This has been huge for me lately. I realized some time ago that after a knockdown, that is your chance to make your enemy pay. Create some damage and then get out. Nothing wrong with making them come to you! Very well done, I definately want to see more from you.
As for suggestions? FA stuff definately. You did a couple quick FAs and used them to dash in and start a string. Maybe more specifics on YOUR choices of combos and why. I noticed you seem to like the hurricane kick about equal to if not more than the hadoken in a string. Why is this?
Throw strings. It’s definately a weakness for me and I wouldn’t mind seeing someone like you do a piece on defending and attacking with them.
Other than that… I wouldn’t mind some poke strings that are kinda meant to be somewhat broken (don’t combo) and don’t involve specials always. Something I can throw out there to keep my timing seem a little weird and keep them guessing. For example. I kinda like sLP,sMP,sHP or tap back (in prep to block a reversal) then sHK The first two combo and you can sometimes catch an easy hit with the sHP or sHK if they get to happy to counter you.
Anything you look for in specific match ups. Gimme some Abel stuff man! I hate that Frenchmen. If only the rest of their country fought that hard!
Thank you so much for these videos. It has really helped to improve my ryu. I really appreciate it. Keep them coming.
props on this
reminds me of the intro to da mystery of chessboxing
The game of chess, is like a swordfight
You must think first, before you move
Toad style is immensely strong, and immune to nearly any weapon
When it’s properly used, it’s almost invincible
is that a poem or some exert from some weird philosphy?
its from a song which was sampled from an old martial arts movie “the mystery of chess boxing”
Great videos man, I greatly appreciate what you are doing so us noobs (or just people trying to get down something) can learn!
Nice vids, I started playing Ryu a few days ago and the vids gave alot of good insight about him.
Really, really, really good vid.
Well I know I’m new, but since you ask what people wanted to see, there is what I’s like to see in your next vids :
You stop calling ryu “raou” ^^.
No more seriously, the more I read this forum, and the more I read about ryu beeing defense oriented…I learn a lot about spacing/turtling etc…and that help me a lot to progress.
But I’m more the agressif type player, and I’d like to see some good pattern to really pressure your opponement in short distance.
Thinks like for exemple :
f.mp (on hit) => Shoryu => FADC that open you the gate for quite good mix up if the opponement guard the shoryu like :
=> Throw
=> cr.lk => cr.lp => cr.mk => Hadoken/Tastu
=> cr.lk => cr.lp => Throw
=> Just guard
…
To sum up, I’d like to see more of what ryu have to set up mix up/mind game/wake up game while beeing safe or nearly safe.
Long story short, more aggressive Ryu please ^^.
Nice freaking vid man. I’m a pretty darn good Ryu player as he is the only character I’ve ever seriously played with since Fighting Street, and your vid has given me alot of incite.
You’re the man Mickey, I’ve already gone from 2500BP to 3200BP legit and I’m feeling a lot more confident now in matches around my skill level and higher. You would never imagine how much of a difference it can make to play with the right mindset instead of just devoting hours in training mode to just be a flashy and technical fighter. However, we definitely need more of your teachings and here are some things I think would be very useful on your next tutorials:
Focus Attack Tutorial: Advanced discussion of offensive and defensive uses and strategies through the use of focus attacks and focus attack dash cancels.
Baiting Tutorial: Basic tips and advanced tactics for setting the perfect baits and bluffs.
Corner Trapping: Do’s and Don’ts of corner trapping your opponent, how to maintain the trap and what not to do to mess it up.
Mind Games (Advanced tutorial): How to build confidence and make the opponent play by your rules. Best ways on how to read your opponent like a book, improve the prediction/psychic game.
Just some stuff out the top of my head that I would love to see, I know some things can’t really be fully explained in 10 minutes. However, if we can somehow grab the most useful bits of info here on the Ryu forum and put it all in some video tutorials it would be awesome.
Nice vids Mickey.
If you don’t mind the suggestion, I would like to see some strats on using FA and escaping FA on wake up and other situations.
At the moment I rarely use it because I can’t use it effectively. But I think it’s a great tool for free combos and baiting. I’m trying to incorporate them to my game but I’m having a tough time doing it.
Once again, great vids and thx for your help to the Ryu community.
Yeah I agree. I’d like to see some more aggressive Ryu play. While he may not be Ken or Chun Li, (I believe)he definitely can be used not as just a turtler. If there is a reason why I don’t see alot of aggressive Ryu play then let me know.
Thanks Mickey for taking the time to help people out with your vids!
Just a very basic question regarding your BnB combos in the first video:
Is there a reason for using c.lk, c.lp instead of say c.lp, c.lp at the start of the combos.
c.lk has 4 frames startup and c.lp has 3 frames?
Also whats ur main combo you do after a cross up?
c.lk, c.lp, c.hp, HK seems hard as the c.hp whiffs…
I use the c.lk (though slower by 1 frame) mainly because it hits low. Therefore it catches the majority who think a possible throw is happening (they stand up and try to tech). The 1 frame slower is much worth it in my opinion.
The crouching hp whiffs only on certain characters that get pushed far away…Balrog is one off the top of my head, however most characters still get hit by the crossover combo. If you feel the c.hp will whiff, just go ahead and do a shoryuken! Thats what I’ve been doing!
EDIT: I just want to say thank you all for your insight, I’ve been reading into it a lot, and I’ve got a fair idea of what I will be doing the next video about. My only question is…do people mind if I clock this one out tonight or later tomorrow if it’s not that great of quality like the others? I wouldn’t mind doing it at all, and I probably won’t be getting a new capture card for awhile…but anyways, what do people think…you guys want part 3 now? Or should I wait for the new capture card?
