Ryu Tutorial Video

Due to people enjoying my first tutorial, I’ve been making more video tutorials regarding basic strategy with Ryu. Recently I’ve seen a lot of combo videos or other various videos that show extravagant combos that just don’t fly in actual game play. All in all, the reason why I made these videos is so that people can get a general idea of how to become better with Ryu, instead of just watching these combo videos that don’t really teach anything. Here are the links to the videos:

I try to make the videos progress in skill as I make them. The first video goes over basic combos that are feasible in real matches, basic ground strategy using c.mk and hadouken’s, options for escaping pressure/mixup situations, overall explanation of Ryu’s strengths and weaknesses, and overall basic strategy. This video gives a fair foundation for beginning to learn Ryu’s ins and outs. The 2nd video goes over things like how to combo ultra in and out of the corner, the uses of Ryu’s super offensively and defensively, and lastly the importance of knowing when to pressure and knowing when to hold back and turtle. The third video goes over uses of the focus attack offensively and defensively, combos using SADC, options after SRK, SADC (on block), as well as baiting…such as what it means to bait, what baiting nets you as a player, and how to bait an opponent.

I plan to continue making these videos until I feel as if I go over what most Ryu players should know and understand. I personally think that it’ll take about 10 videos. Some things that I still want to go over are: advanced footsies/space control, meter control and understanding, the basics of matchup specifics, doing specific attacks for specific reasons, knowing how to control the match (pressing the advantage specifically and why it’s dangerous), knowing when to hold ultra and when to use it as well as setting up ultra, and lastly the importance of playing instinctually as a Ryu player.

For those interested I’ve been writing a blog for quite awhile that you can find here: http://oomickeydizzleoo.blogspot.com/ It basically deals with my SF4 findings and such…give it a read, and tell me if it helps you out! I seriously urge anyone to read the FIRST post I ever made on that blog, as it helped me become a better player. A lot of the blogs look “outdated” however in all honesty, I put a lot of work into each and every blog. I honestly don’t think that there are any bad blogs in there with “limited” information.

For some reason I felt the need to reiterate as there are SO MANY QUESTIONS regarding this combo

You should add other easier ways to combo into ultra. Like EX hurricane kick into Ultra and EX Hadouken. These of course are only corner options, though.

alot of good points made in the video mickey, but i just feel like breast feeding people this ryu milk is too friendly

Here’s my main point, is that I’ve played numerous top players and have NEVER gotten a corner combo/ultra situation off EVER.

Cole, Valle, Edma, Itazan, Makoto…never once have they been hit by it…but I’ll take it into consideration

Im playing with a xbox controller and find it extremely hard to DP > FADC.
I have never been able to cancel out of the DP.
I just want to know if its possible to do with the controller… or if i should just shell money out for a mad cats pad.

Pad usually refers to a controller like the X360 or PS3 controllers. Stick is short for arcade stick, which I assume is what you mean, as in should you invest in the mad catz stick. It really depends on your situation. If you see your self taking this game seriously for more than a year, I’d say go for it. But otherwise don’t. It’s a lot of money to throw down for something that really won’t help you in many other games. It’ll also probably take a lot of patience. I took me a whole summer to get used to my first stick. But it makes a lot of things easier, like repeatedly dashing, FADCs, supers, shoryus.

Edit: Oh yeah, this was an awesome video. I was looking for some BnB combos outside of cr. mk fireball.

great video, I’d really appreciate if you could make some more :shy:
(and that combo video too of course :nunchuck: )

Good Video. I’d like to see more SRK setups for FADC, but I’m afraid there aren’t many

Rai you

rai you

rai you

Nice video, I especially like the fact that the combos were all from the ground with the exception of the last bit with the empty jump into c.mk, ex tatsu. I think more of a point should be made that Ryu is most effective on the ground even though the trial modes make you jump in alot, which only leads to losses and frustration in real matches. Keep up the good work.

if you ever jump in with a deep heavy that will combo too. pretty damned basic though. if you don’t know that, well… you’d have to be worse than me, and i’m not very good.

nice vid man…the concept of line is what I get out of it…keep’em coming

I thought this was a decent primer, would be keen to see some more.

Ryu has always been my favorite character and I’ve played every single SF like a religion except SF3 and its variations. That being said, i started playing SF4 and its been taking me a lot of time and frustration to get back into the feel of the game. I got to used to playing GG,tekken, and VF5. This video seriously improved my gameplay and i hope to see that combo video soon.

Thanks man!!

That was an awesome tutorial vid. It definitly gave me some insight to Ryu’s potential and weaknesses. I am a new Ryu player myself, havent played street fighter since '96, so hopefully i should be able to get back into the groove of things.

Thanks for all the comments fella’s. With high demand, I’ll bring in some corner combos and more ultra setups in another video. I’ll also go a bit further into detail regarding setups and other baits.

Thanks again for the video. I have a question about the cr. lk, cr. lp, cr. hp, hurricane combo. I can’t get the cr. hp to connect off of a cross up j. mk. Does it only work at point blank?

this was was an good tool to learn how to play ryu if you are wanting to undertake him for a main or secondary. gj mickey

Ok, gotcha…thanks for responding nicely. I mean it’s good for random matches at least. I wasn’t aware it is bad for high-level play. A good thing to note.
