Ryu Tier without Daigo

Eric Hai from GTASF made top 32 with Ryu I believe and also had a really good match VS Gamerbee in the team tournament.

Damn, I wish I saw that match between Hai and rbee.

Are you serious? This statement alone sheds a completely different light on everything else you have said before it.

Faster fireball, faster footspeed, faster sweep, many many ways to knockdown opponent during a combo (Ken has only his dp), dp that never whiffs after first hit, superior super, many ways to combo into U1. Ken having better mixups means he is more risky. I have yet to see linking U2 from a s.lp in a tournament because it is way too risky if you miss the link. Ryu’s game is much more solid.

^ Yah the C.LP to U2 is a risky link, but hell, its still good shit IMO. FB is only faster by 3 frames. C.FK is slower by 3 but is much better on block (-6 compared to -14). He doesnt need to combo into it because most of his offense is based around mix-ups and resets. His Super might not be great but its not exactly hard to combo from it either and it does more damage (I believe… havent checked so could be mistaken).

Ryu’s game is definately more solid, I wouldnt argue with that, but a lot of the times I think Ken would suit me more. I guess its more that I think he might suit my playstyle more than that he is actually better.

Now this I can get on board with and is the reason I play using Ken way more than I do Ryu.

i just watched the daigo vs sabin money match on youtube.

first off, i feel really bad for sabin. this is the second money match i’ve watched of him this year, where it looks like he just shoots himself. no wonder he hates on daigo so much  - daigo has got his number.

second, since arturo always counter picks - he never takes a bad matchup - he must believe that dhalsim has a pretty big advantage here. he also uses rose, and rose is widely considered to be really strong vs ryu, but you notice he always plays sim in this matchup. i mean, this match just seems so hard for ryu. imo, sabin should have won again he just chokes up in those final minutes.

has any other ryu ever beaten sabin?

do some of you guys still think this is an even or close to even matchup?

if it was anyone but daigo, do you think they could beat sabin or filipino champ?

Is this new? Or just a lower quality vid of what happened at evo 2010?

Are you asking if it’s a hopeless match with ryu against a high quality dhalsim? I don’t think so…

Sabin is beatable. (Anyone is beatable.) It’s just hard as fuck. You really need to know a lot and have an insane amount of experience. Sabin knows a lot and has an insane amount of experience. Other players do as well. Do other ryus? Valle might be able to pull it off. But he has a big disadvantage in not being about to take full advantage of every opportunity. There’s probably some other ryu that have this possibility.

Dhalsim does not have perfect defense. He just has ways to interrupt many common and usually reliable tactics by reaction. But the interrupts won’t necessarily do as much damage as you could if you can get in and stay in. And there’s your chance. (Repeat of the usual ryu-sim spiel…)

Edit: It does look like it might’ve been taken at SBR.

Listen. If enuff ppl play against GeoM MoDInsiDe, they’ll say that Guile is 2 overpowering. But since there are not really enuff Daigos out there who can bring out the full potential of their respective mains like he does, we"ll ave sum whiners & complainers about Ryu. Ryu is just fine with or withour Daigo.

First time I have seen Diago smile.

He smiles a lot actually. He enjoys the enthusiasm of those around him. At least after a game is over. During play, it’s all business all the time.

Unless we have 2 Ryu’s to chose from, one where us Ryu players can use and Diago can only use the 2nd nerfed Ryu

this is true. Daigo’s a really friendly, cool guy. Whilst playing he’s all business, otherwise he’s cool.

Lol, you guys are delusional. By the end of SSF4’s life cycle; Ryu will be considered the best in the game.

^ wow I wish Id read this before actually bothering to respond to your other post in match-up thread… . And Ryu the best in the game…?! Thats just stupid and biased, probably just cause you personally have an issue dealing with Ryu. You use Guy, it’s only a 6-4 match-up, stop crying. Thanks.

Ryu will always be a strong character because he literally has the tools to deal with every situation in the game and he doesn’t have any inherent weaknesses. Sure he doesn’t have the best anything in the game, but everything he has is pretty much “good to great.”

The problem with Ryu is that he’s so easy, he’s hard. I mean, it’s easy to pick Ryu, abuse auto-block DP into Ultra and think you’re good at the game, but people who main Ryu have to know spacing, zoning, and footsies better than almost any other character in the game to really master their character and win at a high level. Ryu doesn’t have anything abusable at a high level except maybe his fireball, but even then almost every character in the game has a way around fireballs.

I would say Ryu is probably the most well-rounded character in the game. Since SSF4 is so balanced, that would make him the best in the game IMO since he has the tools to get around every character in the game even if it’s difficult (like against Dhalsim). This is much better than Honda or Bison against Guile which have no way of getting in except just plain outplaying the other player.

well, daigo finished 1-3 in godsgarden 2. basically if you are a tournament player and want to have a shot at beating the best in japan, don’t pick ryu unless you feel you are a better player than daigo

i really can’t figure out why capcom would nerf ryu again other than the constant scrub complaints from people like Duck Strong.

it’s impossible to even read the eventhubs comments section, because every single person there is complaining that ryu is overpowered - even though he is losing .

^ LOL. Tell me about it. It seems like people always say “I beat loads of Ryu’s even though hes stupidly overpowered.” … . Hmmmm… either there’s a lot of ego in their opinion or a lot of stupidity.

Ryu’s potential, is usually almost rarely unlocked and exploited to his full potential. That much is been evident even since Street Fighter II.

However speaking about reaching near full potential about Ryu is usually more often then not almost in-human and well, impossible, this is another reason why Magneto is not #1 in MvC2 and Storm/Sent are higher.

The fact that only Daigo has been the most consistent with Ryu is testament to his scenario. However, let me take it back even further back in the OG SFII era. Back then, an Elite SF2 player Jeff even stated that Ryu would never have been as good as he was Tier Placement wise, if Tomo wasn’t playing Ryu. Because Tomo playing Ryu and utilizing him to his full potential wrecked everyone in the tournaments.

Tomo would even make a Ryu vs Claw (a match up btw that should favor Claw) look like it was a Ryu murderfest on Vega. If you even take it further and look during Hyper Fighting, if there was no Tomo during that games prime…Blanka is #1 in that game, not Ryu.

Daigo is similar in fashion in that he’s doing things from a positioning, zonining, and footsie standpoint that is as close to the potential of Ryu in SSF4 as possible, which is why Ryu is placed where he is. However most of us who play Ryu will never reach that plateau.

So to me, at his potential, yes, Ryu is that good in SSF4.

^ you could say the same about a lot of characters though. Bison, Guile, Honda, Chun, Akuma, etc. They are capable of being played in the same way (personally Id argue that Guile has the absolute top most potential). Youre right in what you say that it is usually the character that happens to have an absolute genius playing them that gets considered the best, but that honour is not Ryu’s alone IMO.

I never once stated that Ryu’s the only one who falls within this potential, but only pointing out that when he’s played to the highest, he’s easily up there in that discussion. Ryu is one of the few characters within the entire SSF4 when played at that peak has almost no recognizable weakness that an opponent can truly exploit to dominate, while he has all of the tools that can make him win in literally every situation.
