Ryu Tier without Daigo

^ yah, thats what I mean. Theyre only useful because Bisons still try to teleport or burn metre to reversal. Surely they know by now youre gonna OS…? Its just noobish for them to do anything other than block.

also, Bison is definately at advantage. His footsies are much better. With decent DRs he can zone really well and avoid FBs, he has a good ultra now, he isnt at more of a disadvantage on knockdown than most other characters (block is usually the right answer on wake-up anyway) and he has insane priotiy in the air. Oh plus scissors… lol, theres a lot of reasons why Bison is at advantage.

I dont see how Bison has an advantage over Ryu either. Check out this interview w/ Air, he talks about what he thinks of some of Ryu’s match ups.

Also I find it interesting who he thinks is the best player. I’ve always thought Shiro could easily contend for that title and I’ve always thought he is better than Daigo. I disagree with Ryu getting nerfed. I dont think he had anything significantly nerfed, its just the other characters got better and I like it that way. Nothing changed to make him play any different

Although I do think a nerf to his air hurricane kick is verrry significant. If they do nerf it, they better buff his fireball speed/recovery otherwise Ryu players will be spending alot of time being locked down.

^ So glad to hear Air say things Ive been thinking for a long time :

  1. Ken is strong. IMO hes stronger than Ryu. He has better mix-ups and F.MK and what does Ryu have that Ken doesnt? Slightly faster FB… thats about it. Hell he can link his sodding U2 from a S.LP
  2. Rose and Guile kill Ryu. YUP big time. Guile is awesome in super. His zoning is just fecking nuts. And Rose just has a very good answer for pretty much everything Ryu can do, except on wake-up without U2.
  3. Seth. Man thank god Seth is getting nerfed. He is total srcub friendly BS. Having low health does not balance it out when he has an many options as he does.
  4. Patience is key. Man I wish peeps understood this. Hell I wish I understood it more than I do. Im getting there but still not yet.

Oh btw Bison is without doubt at advantage VS Ryu. His hitboxes are absolute god tier. Seriously, J.FP (the one where he kinda dives). That thing is just fricking insane. S.MK, S.FK, scissors… come on, Bison is a fricking beast in Super. Da fuck is Ryu gopnna answer with? FBs? Bisons jump is awesome and he has DR. C.MK? Compared to Bisons pokes its weak. Wake-up shenanigans? YES, because Bisons still try to escape easily,if they just blocked the jump-in they wouldnt have a problem.

I dont think Ken is stronger than Ryu. What Ryu has on Ken is his links especially his link into sweep. Ryu’s sweep is also faster. Ken hits hard tho and I think he is easier to combo with. I think they are even. Ken’s Ultra2 from a standing lp is space/character dependant isnt it? I think its more of a parlor trick than a solid tactic tho I dont know I dont use Ken.

Guile is good. Maybe too good but I dont know if he needs a nerf. Maybe a slight nerf to Sonic Boom. I like that hes good like he was back in the day. Seth is a cheap mofo. I have always seen Rose as a good pick vs Ryu. Its not an easy fight but I have a hard time calling it a disadvantage. Its like in SF4 I felt vs Balrog was a tougher fight for Ryu than it was for Balrog, but it was still considered even.

Same for Bison, I think it was considered a tougher fight for Bison but still even. Now its Ryu on the other side of “even”.What you say about just blocking on wake up, the same could be said for Scissor kicks and Roundhouses. That stupid punch of his I think you have to dp it earlier than usual but Im not sure.

I think Dhalsim is a disadvantage. I dont know I never really paid attention to tier talks so who knows. Its very possible Ryu has alot of disadvantaged matchups now. I remember in one of those Super blogs the devs stating the nerfs/buffs were given with Ryu in mind, so I guess some disadvantage shouldnt be a surprise

I agree with most of the other stuff you said, just this bit. You cant just block roundhouses indefinately, hell put you in the corner, and scissor kicks do chip damage which adds up. Wake-up isnt the same. You can get out of a wake-up with good defense, even without using a move. you can block and later teleport or bak dash w/e, just that most Bisons use their escape moves on the first wake-up frame when it is very easy for the Ryu to OS. You cant say the same about scissors and roundhouse, those moves dont constitue one isolated example like wake-up does, at some point you have to beat them.

The reason you use OS is to make sure they block the jump-in though. You want them to do that because ryu’s close game is pretty good.

It’s not the pressure that characters like Bison can have with a repeatable, mostly safe, special, but it’s still strong in its own right.

Yah you use OSs to make sure they block, but still I see Bisons hitting reversals and tele’s all the time, and not just online. I was thinking here about the post that said “Bison is at a huge disadvantage on wake-up”. hes not. hes not in a worse situation than the average character cause he can and should just block, like most others. Once hes blocked the first hit he has a good chance at escape with his various options, which actually put him at an advantage compared to most others.

And yah Ryu’s close game is good, but it isn’t better than Bison’s. Scissors give him the win up close. Ryu has to use FBs and C.MK brilliantly to win this match. C.MK doesnt reach as far as Bison’s pokes, and Bison has above average means of dealing with FBs.

The problem with Ken is he has the same bad matchups as Ryu, but they’re worse(except maybe bison. I like playing ken vs. bison). Guile, Rose, Sim…all horrible matches for Ken. He can’t play these matchups as patiently as Ryu does.

When I play Ken I love the reach of his DP, his overall speed and his Tatsu set up.

But… I miss my Solar plexus, my links to c.hk, all the links with c.mp, my ultra.

Actually Ken vs Bison is interesting because I think you can punish a lot easier badly spaced scissors kicks.

Ryu vs Dhalsim and Ryu vs (good) Bison are my hardest match up.

I think Valle has the best ryu as far as option and offensive game plan goes Diago just became a low forward runaway guy I know they nerfed ryu like hell but gave him better priority on his normals but Diago hasnt wowed me in aa while kind of boring. Alex is showing me some real Calipower

hmm… ken vs rose is a better matchup then ryu vs rose - because of step kick. fireballs arent that useful in this match up because of her reflects; so step kick becomes better than ryu cr.MK in this match.

ken vs sim is much better for ken than for ryu… all of ken’s moves are better suited to fight against dhalsim.

guile sucks for both ken and ryu - not sure who it is tougher for.

everyone has an opinion :). i doubt too many people would think alex valle would fair very well in a race to 10 against daigo…but it’s cool to see the support for US players.

i dont know how you play against rog or honda, but it is very hard to stand ground. both those character can push ryu back. and against honda, he kept ex headbutting though block strings - then daigo has to start over. in a 1 game match, it’s hard to read an opponent and set up baits and stuff.

here on the forums, ryu vs rog is 5-5 or 6-4 ryu, but in results this really isnt true. i dont see why it’s not 6-4 for rog except that daigo is usually pretty good at this match. everyone agreed that the matchup was hard in vanilla - 5-5 at best, then why would it be better or the same for ryu, considering he got nerfed and rog is pretty much the same.

in a race to 5 tournament, i think daigo would fair pretty well against everyone. look at god’s garden 2.

The difference between Ken VS Rose and Ryu VS Rose is pretty minimal IMO (one has a faster FB,. the other Forwards Kick). Id have to agree, however. In my opinion Forward Kick would probably be more of an advantage in this match.

anyone know if there was a single ryu beside daigo in the tournament? i saw more makoto than ryu.

i didnt see one ryu during the singles stream. Chris Hu, used cody and abel instead of ryu, unless i missed a match.

i really hope they dont nerf ryu anymore.

We have a chance since Daigo performed poorly this weekend

My pool at SBR had the ryu army. At least +5 other ryu than me. (Went 4-2. Got a bye and beat 3 other players. That’s quickly becoming typical performance for me, sadly.)

This was actually relatively rare. The pools were weird as hell. A friend was in the 16th pool which had almost all Rufus, Abel, Gief, Claw. (Which they started at 11:30pm saturday btw. Such BS.) I saw two gief vs claw matches playing side by side at the same time. Friggen twilight zone.

Theli, which characters did you lose to and how did the other ryu players fair? How many more wins did you need to make it out? Seems like you did pretty well :). Dont listen to frame data on the ryu forums and i think you will do even better  j/k.

I didnt see any ryu’s on stream at all. In the daigo vs marn match, i thought daigo played well. He lost to wake up ultra and dash guess ultra - so strategically he played really well. Marn does have a really good dudley though; so i am not taking anything away from him.

I think I lost both times to rufus. First one shouldn’t have happened. I feel like I gave him too much respect and fell hard because of it. 2nd one was pretty good and I’m not sure how much better I could have done. I felt like I knew the matchup reasonably well, but I’m just not very consistent in my approach.

One of the players I beat was another decent ryu. Sucks, but what you gonna do? The other players were an El Fuerte, which I horribly, horribly dominated… (Pro-tip: Dash under the run splash/grab mixup all day if they don’t do other things and don’t play with spacing enough.) And I think another rufus.

The other ryus really didn’t impress me much. I don’t think any got all that far.

Gamerbee was in my pool, which was a surprise. Him and Marn, who was supposed to be my pool’s top seed, got swapped for some reason. The adon took winners obviously. I didn’t get a chance to play him, or yipes who was the other big name. I can’t recall who got out in losers. I did see the Gamerbee/Yipes match. Was entertaining.

Edit:
Given the bracket had 32 slots and I had one bye… I guess I needed to win 2 more to make it out on the loser’s side? Not sure if I have that right.

nice job theli.

do you have any footage of the matches from your pool?

who did marn lose to? they said it an unknown player.

Unless I unknowingly fought some known player, I doubt it. They were hand-cam recording some matches I believe.

I don’t recall who marn lost to.

Edit: Well, the interview they put up for Marn mentions who he lost to. “Rath” (or wrath or whatever), a gief from atlanta, and Dieminion, a guile from new york.
