Rose Strategies and Match-ups

Okie Dokie vs Rufus,

I found out that Slide can go under Rufus’ Cr Jabs. I just wait for the string to finish then slide on in. Also standing HK is good from the right distance. Jabs are good if I can keep him blocking and push him away safely. Also jumping straight up and fierce is good from time to time.

Not trying to counter his block strings with my pokes really helped my gameplan. Let him push me away so I can dash/slide under jump-ins and throw.

This video helped too:

Thanks for all your vids Saqs.

I agree with Saqs, a good Rufus is a pain in the ass

I lost to a Sagat who did nothing but C LP, C LP, LK TK. Rinse repeat. Haha me :frowning:

That’s a pain in the ass lock down if they don’t screw it up. You should be able to ultra out of it though. Try to not get backed into the corner because if you do, then getting out is going to be extremely difficult. If you do get stuck in the corner, you can try a slide to escape under his TK or an EX soul throw to get out, but in either case you may end up eating something even if you do. But you should be able to get out.

We don’t have a general discussion thread so I’ll post this here so it’s all forum-toppy and shit.

We should do Rose Ball RanBats. And maybe a thread dedicated to Rose Ball in general.

haha it should be one post stuck and locked just explaining the rules:

no lp/HP reflect
winner of last match serves
no crossing the line
no jumping after the spark is served
handicap all the way up on both sides
best of 5 or 7
no other attacks except mp.reflect

aside from that, I can’t see what else needs discussed

EX reflect is also allowed in Rose ball. People commonly rush the line and “spike” the ball with EX reflect to try and catch the other person off guard.

Questions for fleshing out the rules:

 • I’m assuming you’re allowed to FADC after the Reflect if you want?

 • Any rules on how close/far to the line you have to be on serve?

 • Do you absolutely have to play with the line rules on the Training stage or can you agree with the opponent to go anywhere with no spacing rules?

 • Is jumping permitted or can you only dash for spacing?

 • Does letting a Spark die via FA absorb, jumped over, LP or HP Reflect and such count as a forfeit of the round?

I would seriously like to do a RanBat or online league for this, that’d be too good.

 • I’m assuming you’re allowed to FADC after the Reflect if you want? yes

 • Any rules on how close/far to the line you have to be on serve? I’ve played where both players immediately jump back on start so you’re pretty much even on sides and allowing max space to start. also you can serve any time you want as long as it’s your serve, and it can be any speed of spark.

 • Do you absolutely have to play with the line rules on the Training stage or can you agree with the opponent to go anywhere with no spacing rules? I’m sure it’s possible.

 • Is jumping permitted or can you only dash for spacing? I think jumping would be less reliable to get in a reflect afterward than a dash.

 • Does letting a Spark die via FA absorb, jumped over, LP or HP Reflect and such count as a forfeit of the round? you can’t fa with bare minimum health. and yes it would.

Funny how a metasport arises from her gimped reflect window…

Like a game of chicken, except even more dangerous… -.-

The larger window but faster return speed in the old days made things a little more dicey.

quick question guys. if im knocked down and i want to ex soulthrow on wakeup knowing my opponent is going to cross me up, what direction do i input the motion?

you must start the motion in a direction and finish it in the other.

In pratice for a soul throw, you have to do a half circle.

any tips for jab happy ryus and rogs? i get jabbed to death so often against them from people just machine gunning jab, I just seem unable to stuff with anything and my grab happy play style dictates I be within jab range very often

Crouchblock until they overhead you and option-select throw when you think it’s coming? If you can force them to overhead or throw you at least break their rhythm and force a change. Occasional neutral jLKs or whatever just to mess them up. Either that or switch your game to runaway and try to keep those types of players at bay.

Reminds me of . “European resets” lol.

I don’t bother approach somebody turboing out with anything that jab would beat. I think sweep, s.hp, all beat jab, but I haven’t played anybody like that for awhile so Iunno. fireball’s good, or maybe a crossup.

Attention all Rose players!

I’m from the Ryu forums and DarthPaul1982 is coming up with an interesting idea to get people together who are serious about the game and want to get together with other serious training partners.

Skill level is irrelevant at this point, but dedication is a must.

Weekly online matches and tournaments are required. Tournaments are for practice and gauging your own improvement only. A point system is being established to help keep track of active members so you can clearly see who is serious and who isn’t.

We’re still working it out the details, but if you are interested, please check out thread here.

Eh, if he wanted to improve his game, he would’ve sent me a player match invitation when I beat him last night:xeye:

Hmm, quick question.
Abel COD can be countered after blocking the first hit right? wether he use P or K.

im having a tough time against Rufus and Gen… (im not used to the match up… i play mostly against Ryu, Ken, Sagat and Akuma)

recently i added someone who mains Rufus and Gen… his rufus playstyle is very rush down… dive kicks crossups… and crazy Ex Messiah Kicks, this move has priority over ANYTHING i do… its just crazy…

most of Rufus moves are followed by c.lk c.lk…

how can i punish/strategy against:

 • Messia kicks (ex also) ?
 • tornado twirl…
 • dive kick… then followed by s.lk, s.hk into ultra :frowning: (crossup)

im very frustrated with my performance :frowning: i should’ve used soul throw or c.hp more often… but i was never fast enough… i guess i was flustered by the rush down…

my match against Gen was decent enough… (i actually managed to win) … but 1 slip and you eat heavy punishment by Gen… one that can end with Super into Ultra…

problems with Gen:

 • Mantis jump mk crossup into c.lk…

i try to get out of the cycle by sliding… or Drill…

Gen is annoying but really it’s just a question of recognizing the crossup and blocking it. His mantis MK cross has crazy reach, but if done like that, it’s also very obvious that it crosses you.

Olympian: Most of the Rufus stuff is covered in this thread, has pretty good info about reacting to dive kicks. Just try to position yourself so that you will have favorable angle when you block: if he’s right above/slightly on the side of you and you block standing you’ll have more frames to react/evade to them, but if he gets a sharp angle and you’re crouch blocking he gets a big advantage.

Here’s some notes about his special moves:

Tornado: I really don’t have any concrete ways of dealing with this since it seems like he has advantage on block, but apparently you can ultra him inbetween the hits.

I couldn’t figure out the setup yet, so this needs more investigation.

Snake Strike: Beware of trying to cross him up after getting a spiral knockdown. If he quick recovers he can EX SS you for free.

EX Jesus: Here’s something I’ve found about EX Jesus, Rose’s c.mk is really good against it. I don’t know if it’s because the active frames are too slow to hit it or because her body is really close to the ground(probably both), but it’s really hard for Rufus to counter/stuff her with it when she throws it out.

In fact, it’s great when he’s waking up with meter. If you meaty him with c.mk he won’t hit you out of it, and you can block the rest and punish with c.fp xx drill. Even better, if you meaty from a certain distance you will block one hit, then he will fly over you allowing you to punish. It’s a good way to make him waste ex meter, and if he stops using ex jesus on wakeup you can start your own wakeup game against him.

-Gen is at his best when he’s in on you and with meter, but even though his pokes are really really good it seems hard for him to get in without jumping in. The key here is to either keep him out or let him come to you. Stay around his jump distance so you can c.hp on reaction to his jumpins and check him with f+fk and ex sparks. Don’t really try to poke him out since hands can cut through everything (but it’ll push you back a bit if he can’t FADC), plus his focus is really good: if you eat it expect a big combo. If he tries to use it in anticipation of an attack, of course use spiral to punish.

-If he does get meter and catches you with s.mk xx hands->FADC, he’ll mix in another normal or throw, or try to crossup. Be ready to break the throw or backdash on reaction, the best thing here is try to reset the distance between you two.

-if he tries to cross you up and start jumping games, don’t hesitate to focus dash out of there.

-Also, don’t jump at him if you can help it. His Mantis j.fk acts like Rufus’s j.fk in which he can juggle with super/ultra afterwards. Crossup attempts are fine.

I think he also has less health than her(900 IIRC) so you’re already good on that front. Just don’t let him rush you down and overwhelm you with shenanigans.
