Rose Strategies and Match-ups

I’m not very familiar with El Fuerte but when he does an Ex version of that move where he runs and then does a air body splash -

it crushed my attempt to ex soul throw it. My timing might have been a bit off, but it looked like it was going to nail him and I still ended up getting crushed.

Balrog eats her fucking lunch for me so far. Once hes up close your options become very limited.

WTF do you do against akuma. He just spams red fireballs all day that I have to block, i finally get over them without getting uppercutted or ultra’d just to have him either do an airfireball or port away safely. Chase this guy all day and can barely land a few hits. only saving grace is ultra at some points, but even then he can like tele out of that

Balrog is pretty scary indeed. You should save some stock to use EX Spiral against him. Beats out his rushes and EX rushes, and when he’s up close ticking, I’ve found it works as a “get away from me” move. I’m not sure if EX version is safe on block though.

c.fierce is your best friend against jump-ins. And someone else mentioned that Soul Reflect beats wake-up reversals. I’ve tried it and stuffed Balrog’s headbutt reversals. I’m not sure if it stuffs EX version.

Other than that, get ready to tech his throws and stuff. My ultra caught jump ins plenty of times. Though it has to be right when he is at his peak of his jump about to fall.

Well, that’s what I do with my experience at least. If it’s bad or if there’s other ways around it, feel free to critique me.

@IceWilly… You can Soul Reflect it so you know.

you can fully soul reflect red fireballs?

Yeah, as long as it’s not EX or anything, normal soul reflect will reflect it.

You may have to use the EX sould reflect.

ok well apparently i just sucked before. You can normal reflect all 3 red fireballs from akuma and thus probably all non ex fireballs with all 3 different reflects. Its kind of funny to reflect all of Shoto’s hado’s and then stuff their jump in’s with cr.hp Most of them just stand there after that puzzled as to what to do.

What are you guys doing to standing opponents that are hanging out half screen or more away. LP soul spark spam? looking for jump in/cross up attempts? This game is so slow vs SF2 I don’t have much confidence going for jump ins and cross ups. I guess I gotta figure out what easily linkable combos I want so my fingers are trained.

Her cr.lk I really don’t like. I wasn’t having great luck cancelling with it and you can’t spam it out to distance yourself from people with you can do with jabs.

Just link cr.lp or cr.mp from it. I’ve been hearing some people don’t like it that much but you’re going to need it when you start tap grabbing, as getting the link combo from it is highly important!

Here’s how I use the ultra:

I throw it out if they jump in on me from about mid-long range. If you do it right at the apex of the jump they will fall right into it. It is not a smart idea to use this if they’re jumping from up close or jumping backwards. And don’t anticipate the jump and ultra too early, or your opponent will soar over the scarf and slap you with an air move into a combo for free.

I also use it as a ultra counter, I don’t know about all of them, but I can report that Rose can punish A LOT of ultras on block, including Ryu’s if your timing is right. Of course, if someone is dumb enough to fierce DP and I block it, they’re eating it as well.

Against Akuma, you can Shamwow him out of his teleport if you see it coming.

I honestly think Rose has one of, if not the best throw game in the entire game. Use Rose’s slide to set up some easy throws, crossup with j.mk and do some low short pokes, slide, throw, rinse and repeat.

I also think Rose has some of the best normals in the game. standing roundhouse is a freaking awesome poke, especially against Zangief. If you’re fast enough, you can sorta use Rose like Guile in a way, jab soul spark, dash in, and throw out one of your awesome pokes to keep the pressure up.

I dunno how useful this is (I’ve used it effectively a few times) but you can juggle into Rose’s super from a fierce soul reflect, note that the active frames of this move are garbage, and so is the range, so use it at your own risk.

Rose’s super is amazing, even if it’s blocked you can dash in and setup a throw or some low pokes, and it easily combos from a lot of normals and the drill. Her super is so good that I never once throw out an EX move during a match, unless it is the last round and I need to EX soul spark on wakeup for a chip kill.

EDIT: Also, if you’re fighting Guile, always Ultra after the first hit of his sweep, get’s 'em everytime. Super works as well for this.

Does anyone have any tips for fighting Zangiefs or dealing with Akuma’s air fireballs?

Air fireballs can be reflected and even if they are landing shallow most of the time it will hit. Its not a great option against akuma’s that are on the offensive with more jump in’s after, but its possible. I think a HP reflect will bounce it back up at them but its doubtful it will hit, I am going to test the MP reflect hitting them on their descent. What about a neutral jump normal? What is rose’s best distance normal in the air? the akuma won’t have a kick out, so maybe you can stuff him clean in the air if he is jumping in that close.

Also, what have people noticed about Akuma’s super/ultra? I know its a grab but when are the times its guaranteed to hit? It seems you cannot jump out of it like in HDR if you are falling back.

Furthermore, Akuma is a pain in the ass with his teleport vs my ultra. A friend of mine seems to be able to teleport backwards and escape it everytime. I get to watch him teleporting right over my scarf. Am I missing something here?

I dunno about you, but I have yet to get hit by Akuma’s super or ultra in about 30 games against him so far. Maybe it’s because they telegraph it so much but I’m always able to jump backwards out of the way, and when I land I’ve got a nice Shamwow with their name on it. Pretty sure you can still jump out of it, I’m certain I did at point blank range.

The only way I can say to get out of the teleport thing is to not give them a chance to touch the ground. The only times I ultra Akuma are when he’s jumping from deep, after a whiffed fierce dp, or a whiffed ultra. Unless the guy is just so stupidly predictable that I know he’ll doing something like 2 st. rh’s at thin air just cause he can. I’ll try jumping straight up tonight.

I usually stick to j.fierce and j. forward for Air2Air stuff. She has some awesome normals that stuff just about everything except Chun’s.

Zangief feels completely free.
His jump arc means he’ll almost always trade or just flat out land on jab soul sparks, and f+hk destroys not just lariat but tons of other things.
If he lariats again free hits.

Akuma…I honestly don’t know yet.
I did learn about reflecting all three hits of the red fireball pretty fast, that was cool to know.

My thing is this, she really doesn’t have a reversal right?
c.HP is very much an anticipatory anti-air, I’ve had people jump at me in the corner and just end up behind me when I try to c.HP them.
Soul throw as anti air is again not great either.

At the moment though I’m having immense trouble against Sakura.
I think it’s her repeatable c.mk short tatsu sequence that leaves her in frame advantage and you basically can’t poke anywhere until she finally pushes you out.
If she mixes up with throw or medium tatsus it gets even more annoying.
Rose’s pokes are good but Sak is somehow continuously outpoking me when I try to fight this sequence.

Not having a reversal is Roses biggest issue. A good rush down can put her in a world of hurt. She has much more trouble against non fb characters than anything IMO. The only thing ive found to somewhat get out of constant poke strings is an occasional low strong but it’s not reliable.

Ex Drill is a buff, invincible, armor breaking reversal. I’ve seen it beat Gief’s ultra.

Ex Soul Throw can get you out of trouble or corner.

Shamwow is ok if you’re midscreen, since having it blocked pushes you back.

Is the Ex Reflect invincible?

Invincible on startup? invincible until hit frames?

If you land the reversal EX drill you go right through meaty’s ? if so, hooray!

Its kind of annoying that you can display all kinds of inputs, damage combo’s, stun etc in training mode… but there is no way to view hitboxes. :wasted:

I hope that’s true too.

Man, what do you guys use against Chun’s jump ins??!? My c.hp either whiffs or we trade.

What about backdashing and then doing spark/drill/st.rh ?

if she knows her jump ins have priority and you are in the corner you could be looking for soul throw.

If she is close enough for the jump into potentially cross up you might be able to soul throw under it and escape. If its definitely going to land in front of you maybe test the spacing on the backdash and see what your options are. Her ground poke may take priority over your’s.

EX Spiral has a teeny bit (and I do mean teeny) of invincibility at start up.

All EX moves have roughly the same startup invincibility.

Drill itself can evade low jabs.
