I might be reading into this too much, but a lot of the interest I had in RE5 has kind of vanished. It might be because I like conflict and the media criticism about racism was fun at the time…it was like I was expecting what media or feature they’ll release to make the game even MORE racist. Now that we get to see gaping maws of death, head growths (which look fucking AWESOME BTW) and an African female protagonist; it certainly has de-racified the game a LOT to me. Dunno about non-gamers but it’s like just so long as you know someone from that ethnic group, you can do “it”.
The other thing that bugs me that isn’t non-game related is that how nice the female protagonist looks in comparison to the other people in the game. I’m not saying that she should be butt fucking ugly, but for a game that seems to pride itself in making a bit more realistic with even a less bishounen looking main protagonist via Chris (when compared to Leon) and the Africans, it really sort of breaks that realism when you see a blemish free looking chick that reminds us of every other video game babe from the beginning of time.
Like seeing things like Dr. Salvador (with that looks like a hedgetrimmer chainsaw in comparison to RE4 Dr. S’s) the dogs and even the killer head lice/growth they look far less cartoony than RE4s. I’m sure when I play through it I will probably get the same WTF moment when I first encounter something just like when I encountered my first exploding head in RE4.
Wait. So are you saying that your interest has wained because there’s less controversy going on now? I can’t say I’ve noticed it decrease any. I still see plenty of idiotic posts claiming how racist that this game is being portrayed. As long as Chris Redfield remains a white man who kills 1000+ black Africans then someone will call it controversial.
Just wait until the game gets released, then like 6 months later when the media catches wind of it. Maybe that will renew your interest some, OC?
And the reason why this new character is so beautiful in comparison to the enemies is because you get to play as her. No one wants to play a game as an ugly person. Where’s the fun in that?
Ugly woman with a gun = fail
Pretty woman with a gun = future volumes of hentai to be made.
If so, he should pull up in a big, dirty Cadillac and hops out and opens the trunk. “Shiiit. Whatchu want, mah brotha? You want guns? I gots me some mutha fuckin GUNS!” Maybe even thrown in a little “for shizzle” into it for good measure?
I haven’t frequented the boards all that much but it’s just that to me this new trailer was just a bit of damage control for the controversy. Adding in albino (or where they white?) enemies in the crowd of Las Plagas Africans; adding a scene with the actual Las Plagas taking over the person, the head growths and a black female protagonist it certainly shows that it’s trying to say it’s a game and not a racist game. I can see it so I just interpreted as Capcom trying to lessen controversy but apparently it isn’t so. Still it’s these small things that kind of made me lose interest in it because it seemed so ingrained in reality.
I never had much interest with the RE series and RE4 I played on a whim which I enjoyed. However since it was the beginning of a new type of RE, it didn’t really make me want to play all the other installments. RE5 did interest me insofar as the controversy because to me that seemed to be the only thing really new as compared to better graphics and being set in Africa however I’ll pick it up if the media reports it to be awesome. Not to mention that all it seems to be is just bare bones details (from what I could gather) the controversy was the only thing that kept any interest. New details are entirely welcomed.
I too don’t want anyone to be fugly either when playing as a woman but at best I expected some concession to fit in with the rest of the more ugly cast members in the game. I imagine the lowest degree of “ugliness” we would let our female protagonists in any game to degrade to is Half Life 2’s Alyx, Beyond Good and Evil’s Jade or at worst Uncharted’s Elena Fisher. Of which I’d accept because yes…ugly does equal fail. It’s just that I find it to be a sort of anomaly to have such a beauty designed to fight in such an ugly world…unless later on in the game you end up in an underground umbrella facility where you get to kill a bunch of Zombie supermodels; then it’d even out.
Your the first person I’ve ever heard that seemed to enjoy Outbreak. That series was looked down upon almost as bad as the Gun Survivor titles. I’m sure with Capcom’s got something else in store for online RE fans somewhere down the road. We’re still really just getting started with online play for consoles.
The only people bitching are the gaming community. You guys completely started this shit and caused it to be such a big deal in the first place.
EVEN now there are still topics where people completely argue with no one about the nonexistent racism Resident Evil 5. It’s gotten so bad you people are shadowboxing with yourself.
You guys brought this on yourself and I personally it sets you back
My friend and I used to play all the time. Only thing that I can say that were problems were no voice chat and the load times with doors etc without an hd. But other then that it was awesome attacking zombies with melee weapons and kicks and what not. Also in 2 they let you walk and shoot at the same time. And you got to love when your team mate refuses to give you the ammo when you have the weapon. Good times. I hope they do make another online re
So I heard that Sherry Birkin was rumored to appear in this game as a supporting character. Nice to hear! However, I had a slightly different take on her presence. She should be a bad guy. Here’s how I came to that conclusion:
In the Wesker report, Wesker says “We have Sherry” and even if that wasn’t canon, I doubt it would be too hard for Wesker to get ahold of Sherry, the only possible human on the planet immune to the G-virus so to speak. So he and his organization abduct Sherry and use her for their research. A lot can happen in 10 years since RE2, after the research is complete, Wesker decides to brainwash Sherry and transform her into a deadly operative for his organization. Someone to carry out assasinations or take care of loose business ends and then report back to him.
Anyway, Wesker makes her an instrument of death because he realises she and Claire had a close bond and should they come into contact, Claire’s emotions would get her killed in the presence of Sherry, slimming down the people who could bother his plans. Not to mention she’d be a thorn in Chris’ side. She could be to Chris in RE5 what Krauser was to Leon 4. Even moreso! Have a type of random mode where she’s in different areas of the game or appears out of random areas to try and kill you.
Think about it, this could be a very nice complete 180 of the Sherry we USE to know: timid, scared little girl who couldn’t do anything by herself. Now, she’s a 21/22 year old cold blooded assassin with a slight cocky attitude kind of like Krauser’s as she sports a Ghost in the Shell-like skin tight body suit, slowly stalking Chris throughout RE5.

EDIT:** Just googled “Sherry Birkin” and there’s a young looking woman with a sinister intent in her eyes that is in RE5. Looks like Capcom might be on the ball
*Sues Capcom for using time machine to steal my idea
Never saw that until you posted it. I should’ve actually google imaged Sherry before I made that first post but oh well. It’s looking like if that’s her, she’ll be a good guy support as in the upper pic you can see a blurred version of her and what looks like her aiming at something. We’ll find out soon enough.
I read 2009, which is still a ways off. Either way I don’t have a ps3 so I won’t be getting my hands on 5 anytime soon of its release. With SF4 rumored to be on PS3, those two games might make me cough up 400+ bucks.
