Religion & Mythology Thread

Dues Ex Machina Kratos is summmoned!

I just got a book recommended to me by a co-worker by Edith hamilton called: Mythology. I think it has like analysis and summaries of like a million other greek and roman books, can’t wait to get into it at lunch.

Kotal Kahn will RULE ALL!!!

Are we talking Thor of the actual Norse mythology or Marvel’s Thor? I’m sure the latter is quite possibly more detailed than the former.

Before this thread is closed I just want to say one thing about this:

LMFAO

Hamilton’s *Mythology *was required reading in my HS.

@Kashiyukasthighs‌ Imma fanboy over 9000 when I see A-Chan

@thepurplebunny @drwill439 i know atheists like making every statement that doesn’t support atheism as “stupid”, but it’s the truth. There isn’t anything that makes your side intelligent or rational over any form of belief in a god/gods. There isn’t anything different from people like you to the random funde theists and your replies just confirm it.

You guys done fucked up the thread. Thanks.

while this is still open I just want to point out how different views are in different cultures when it comes to their deities. When I watched Noah, the descendant of Cain said something along the lines of defying his Creator and that mankind will make its own path/destiny. Was interesting because it reminded me of the view of people in Greek mythology where although their fate was already written they were always trying to create their own, often times rebelling or challenging gods in the process. Meanwhile, Judaism/Christianism (old testament is the same) will always portray just men following the commands of God no matter what (think Abraham and Isaac). On the other hand, in Norse mythology proud warriors wouldn’t give a fuck about anything but honor and a good death in battle.

Somthing that i don’t like of the jew-christian mythology is that their god is so op and is only him, so you can’t have chats like who do you think is more powerful? Ares or Hades?
Totally boring

Canon only incarnations. If we do marvel, tune Thor rules over all.

@tekno virus, that’s true, Apollo could zone him, but if he gets in once it’s game over. Can’t be throw mjolinir?

This thread when to hell as soon as the OP wrote religion in the title thread.

LMFAO. Anyways, I got nothing against religion, I mean if it helps you sleep at night, good (but I do hate assholes who try to change your views by scaring you into thinking if you don’t follow them, “you’re going to hell” shit). Regardless, I’m agnostic because William L. Rowe said, in the strict sense, “agnosticism is the view that human reason is incapable of providing sufficient rational grounds to justify either the belief that God exists or the belief that God does not exist”. Honestly, we should just leave it at that.

Thor.

Once again, in before the lock. There’s a word for a level of stupid you’re on. I want to leave it at “delusional”, but I feel like it’s more than that. I can’t even go with a combination like “stupisional” because that itself seems too lenient. Don’t fret, it may come to me, and if I come up with it after the thread is closed, I’ll post it in the Lounge, so just check there.

You sit there and say that both sides are stupid when it comes to a debate about creation and evolution, yet you blatantly single out atheists as being the irrational ones for not buying that a creator made this universe. And not only do you not list any irrational ideas by the other side, but you seem to think it’s perfectly rational to believe that a creator did make this universe, simply because the natural laws the universe rolls by make it so. I hate to break this to you, but that’s not evidence. The natural laws of this universe do not equal a creator either having done it or a creator existing at all. You don’t provide any sort of link between the result its cause. On the other hand, my claim that your claim is laughable can easily be corroborated, as the cause of you making said claim has resulted in my (still) laughing at it.

PROTIP: If you want someone to buy into your ideas without the assistance of a special Kool-Aid, then you should either be prepared to answer questions that are asked of you regarding them…

Where’s the direct connection between this creator and natural laws?
Where’s the evidence that can corroborate any creator-based activity?
Why and how did this creator make the laws of nature the way they are?
Why did this creator make our planet the only one habitable in our solar system?
Why is this creator sitting idly by while humans kill each other over their interpretations of him / her?
Why hasn’t this creator shown up to clarify the contradictions between and within religions?
You’d think an almighty creator would want to not have their creations getting it wrong all the time, right?
Why should anyone simply believe what you do if you don’t give them a valid reason to?
Why is it irrational to reject the idea of a creator if the “evidence” you provide does not come close to convincing?
Why hasn’t this creator covered your mouth and led you away from the other adults like any parent whose child suddenly embarrasses them would do?

…or, kindly shove it up your ass.

But please, do sit there and claim that being rational with my rejection of your views is impossible, and that questioning your stance is comparable to what a “random funde theist” does. I suppose if I was so talented as to have both my fingers in my ears and my head up my ass at the same time, I’d be able to keep telling myself that to the point of believing it as well.

I’m pretty sure he could, not to mention he controls lightning, so he could direct a bolt or two Apollo’s way for sure. It really depends on Apollo’s speed.

Notice nobody on “our side” said anything about it being better than yours, just different. I’ll gladly say that there are plenty of unproven aspects of science, but even these theories are more real carry more weight than the fantastical book you pull out on Sundays only. Just because something differs from how you feel doesn’t make it wrong.
@ThePurpleBunny‌ said it best, where’s the evidence that the deity of your choosing exists?

@Valaris‌ do you take butter on your popcorn?

In a tier list, does the Christian God have any bad matchups? Honestly, I think his power may be overstated, we have no proof if he were to fight another supreme being the dude would be able to stand up for himself.

Like, his most impressive destructive feats were floods and locusts. Impressive zoning aside, he seems more of a creator than a destroyer, and the whole Jesus thing leads me to believe he’d get stomped on.

even in polytheism, there is always a god tier (among gods). Like when Zeus/Jupiter took over Chronos/Saturn he became big daddy of heavens. Same with Wotan/Odin and in sumerian religion/mythos (forgot the names)

I agree that his power is a bit OP, but that’s because mortals are gazing upon it and oral history beefs it up a bit. He can actually control Death itself, from bringing people back to life to killing a shit ton of Egyptian kids.
