Racing/driving games thread v1.0 Type-R

Most arcade racers on PC are multi-platform (well, all the good ones are), but some like Need For Speed Most Wanted have a wealth of user-created content.

If you’re looking at sims: iRacing, Live For Speed, GTR Evo/GTR2, rFactor, Grand Prix Legends.

But yeah, it depends on your specs and what you’re looking for

Speaking of Need For Speed:

Ressurection!

Thinking of doing a longplay series for Tokyo Xtreme Racer, going through the Dreamcast, PS2 and 360 games.

can anyone hook me up with some cars in GT5. They don’t need to be anything insane, just something decent you might not use anymore. I’m not that far along into it so anything would help.

Anyone got experience with Trackmania 2?

Pro am racing 2 bitch http://m.youtube.com/?tsp=1#/watch?v=EmfLUzXwYLs

I downloaded Trackmania Canyon, if that’s what you’re talking about, it’s pretty solid on controller. This coming from a guy that played TMNF seriously on KB.

Loving Forza 4.

Drag-specific tires? Jeremy Clarkson? Over-hauled career mode? Perks for having played FM3? Awesome!

Very fond of some of the new cars as well. '57 Thunderbird (supercharged engine code), '70 Cougar Eliminator, '06 GTO (I don’t really like '04s), Tesla, etc…

The Tesla roadster is in there?! Is the Tesla S in there as well? I was wondering if any alternatively powered cars made it in. Man I really hope that Turn 10 hunts down that one Jaguar that runs on the electric turbine engine. I don’t care if they have to go by manufacturer’s numbers that thing is gorgeous.

I have to wait till wednesday for my copy. Guess I’ll squeeze in a few more races on 3 before I jump ship.

Better than GT5 by a long shot.

Just in case anyone missed it. GT5 spec 2.0 Is up!

So, someone convince me to buy Forza 4. I played a little bit of both demos for Forza 3 & 4, so I’m more or less a casual racing fan. I dedicated huge chunks of my life to GT 1 and GT2 back in the day, but since I’m older I don’t have the time to dedicate to longer season play within racing games while trying to unlock a ton of crap. I’m looking for a fun online experience, more or less hype arcade style racing without the repetitiveness that was the GT series with license tests and multiple endurance races etc.

K. Let’s see what I can do.

How do you only play a little bit of a demo haha. It’s usually over after a race. Anyway I feel ya man on being casual with your gameplay. You got a life and shit but you still want to have fun. Well Forza 4 works like this in Career mode.

You play several races (and the number of races will probably increase as you play) and you move up in the world. Now you earn cars by leveling up. The less assists you have to make racing easier the more credits and XP you earn. Also each race features some kind of perk for winning. Random XP or 50% more credits for example. When you finally level up the game presents with you with several different cars to choose from for free. Now if there’s a BMW you want really bad for instance you can buy it with the credits you’ve earned from the game or from other players who might be selling their customized ride. So there’s different ways in which you can earn cars for yourself. Not to mention…

If you go online I’m pretty sure you can use anything and race with whatever? Including both cars from your garage and all the cars in the game. I have to double check this though but I know if you just do quick races outside of the career mode you can use whatever you want so I don’t see why not for online.

This game is as casual or as simulation heavy as you want it to be. If you read the reviews for Forza 4 it’s one of the main reasons that people are saying it’s better than GT5. GT5 was so hung up on being the perfect simulation of the racing world for hardcore fans. Forza is caught up on being the greatest racing game of all time for EVERYONE.The scale is wide for this one baby.

Like here’s another one. Because of the Top Gear partnership you get to race on their track but the first time I was on their track I was knocking over bowling pins for a high score.

i cant belive that i have missed this thread, watching it now

Another thing is that Turn 10 threw in a bunch of fun random stuff in this one. Some of the season play races are spiced up compared to what we are used to as well. Chasing a car down Fujimi Kaido while passing casual cars? Lots of fun! Racing within a class while another set of racers in a different class are racing at the same time? Good flavor! In general I like the way they over-hauled the career mode in this one. I haven’t verified this yet, but I heard in multi-player you can play car soccer on the Top Gear soccer field. The game continues to move forward, while Gran Turismo is still hung up on 4 for the most part.

The cars look even more beautiful than they did in 3, and easily surpass GT5. Their “Hollywood lighting” strategy seems to have been a great choice.

My only real complaint so far is how feint the sound of turbos are in this game. I felt in 3 the audibility was good, but the actual sound was rubbish. Now in 4 I can’t hear them at all aside from the blow-off valves. It’s strange because they did such a good job on the centrifugal blowers, which in theory sound similar once they are spinning good (a bit more of a whistle though), and they did fairly well on the roots blowers (though they also seem pretty feint compared to 3). Sound is really important in to me in these types of games. It really adds to the sense of power and raw fun. I wish they could nail it with the turbos. I could have sworn they sounded good in Forza 2, but that was a long time ago. At least the motors themselves all sound accurate so far.

The racing music also isn’t very inspiring. Once again I turned it off. I have to admit Gran Turismo games have consistently had better soundtracks.

If you haven’t played a good sim racer in a long time, I’d give Forza 4 a whirl. The modernization is great. Every time you romp on the throttle or bang through gears, the interior of the car moves forward (your head is thrown back) and it’s really well done. Of course you don’t actually feel the g-forces, but you do get the sense of power and movement. The over-steer physics are very convincing as well. There is even fish-tailing in Forza titles.

The difficulty and assist options are so vast, I’m certain just about anybody can play this game. Are you bad at sim racers? No problem, just flip all the switches to on and the game will even do the braking for you. Gradually wean yourself off of them one by one and before you know it you’re pretty damn good.

And now for something completely different.

Here’s hoping it work with my G25.

^I’ll bite that on a sale. EDIT: After watching that video it’s hard not want it bad. OMG MEMORIES.

And it’s comforting to know that the reason Forza 4 lacks night and weather conditions is because they wanted to keep the game running at 60fps. They do have different times of day and that does matter with all the sunlight. I still hope that in Forza 5 on the Xbox 720 they tackle weather and nighttime racing. Until then I’ll keep playing Dirt 3 for those kicks. On that note…

Anyone else here play the phenomenal Dirt 3? It too goes to great lengths to make you feel like you are in that car or truck and hitting all those different surfaces and enduring changing weather. I love it. It also has great extra curricular modes with Gymkhana and what not. I think more car games need to just let you drive around within a given concrete area like a parking garage or lot. I mean in real life I’m sure we’ve all just dicked around in an open area to just get a feel for our motor vehicles.

Shit I still want a recreation of the Top Gear episode where you drive through a mall with Fiesta while a Corvette chases you.

That Fiesta episode is still my all-time favorite!

^It was just so hilarious and random. Like really? Not only is this happening on TV it’s just happening at all!

So Forza 4 has made me fall in love with Forza all over agin. And yeah having improved loading times helps with that a lot. Not to mention Kinect voice menu navigation. Very slick. Whole thing is just too frigging slick.

If Ibuki could drive what kind of car would she drive?

That pink Micra Hamster refused gave up on road testing (with a bag on his head).

Yo has anyone played the NFS: The Run demo yet? I am feeling it, and think it could be a pretty dope game. At least a good racing game to change the pace from the racing sims.
