Hey guys, so I got to play Infiltration (Akuma: 3rd Place at EVO 2010) at Revelations yesterday:
What do you guys think I should have/not done?
I can’t really comment on your ability as it is far superior to my own. My only question that I would ask you is why you do so many light “feints”, especially when you are just on the edge of Ken’s effective footsie range. I only ask because I feel it is a tactical mistake in any combative sport to overuse feints. They take time to do and lose their effectiveness the more they are used…
I don’t know the exact frame count but I’d guess that Ken’s light kick must take at least 10 frames from start to finish and surely that’s a long time to have no movement options within footsie range.
Would you not be better off just moving back and forth to bait and punish etc.
IMHO, less is better/more effective when it comes to feinting.

I feel Akuma is up there in Ken’s hardest matchup (besides Dhalsm). It’s hard to nitpick much what you were doing wrong as Infiltration seem to know the matchup well. one thing I notice was he was baiting c.MK. From experience, Akuma can throw out a normal, step back, wait for your c.MK then step slightly fwd and c.MP to score a hit.
I saw one instance you could of anti-air with a mp.srk but in match you might not of expected it or saw it too late. I don’t think it’s nitpickable as he wasn’t trying to jump in that much anyways.
In general what i’ve been feeling from this matchup (I lose a lot to Auto-Demon’s Akuma), you have to know your footsies and all the bag of tricks Akuma has (like the double-kick to Demon shenanigan at the end of the match), try to keep life lead and get them to be the impatient one. Not sure that would of even worked on infilltration as like I said, he seems to know the matchup well.
Side note - Joon I’m going to SoCal for a mini-vacation end of June. Let me know if you want to get up one day to get some games in at an arcade or something.
No kara throws! I could see you were having a hard time just getting in on him that’s for sure. It’s akuma so I can’t fault you for that. Though the switch to u1 I couldn’t agree with, once you did that I instantly saw a good chance for u2 to hit him square on. Also he switched to u1, which would of given you free range to use any OS without worry of u2 punish from Akuma. To be honest you probably handled the match way better than I would have, who knows. Some of those demon flip setups off knockdown I dash forward to make whiff, try that next time? And last thing, punish those stand roundhouses after the 2nd kick whiffs bro, big damage or knock down opportunity. Even though you got caught by that u1 it happened earlier and you didn’t capitalize. That’s all, good match man. Loved the OSs to combat the teleports and the good reads.
Good point. I was watching John Choi’s Ryu at Revelations and he rarely did any feints, but when he actually did it his opponent jumped forward. I use a lot of feints for other reasons but I think less is more can be more effective.
Yeah, his spacing was REALLY good! He wasn’t whiff punishing much, but I knew if I kept whiffing my C. MK he’d sweep it sooner or later. So I ended up feinting a lot. I threw a fireball here and there but he was Jumping Forward/Focus > Forward Dash on reaction. This is when I realized he was no gimmick.

One thing that I really messed up on was AA. I had no idea his regular Dive Kick was an overhead! (fail) I was trying to trip guard it the whole time -_-

I agree with G about too many whiffed shorts.
I’m just not a fan of whiffing normals unless you’re bullying someone in footsie range.
I’m also an adamant supporter of U2 against Akuma.
Other than the obvious OS usage, it forces the
Akuma to pick U2 as well. One less demon to worry about.
It’s kinda like in chess when you sacrifice your queen to take their queen.
yeah considering he was crouch teching with cr.mp your best option would of been to delay an uppercut when he does that. but it’s hard to think about that stuff in the heat of the moment.

Yep. When he started crouching teching with C. MP, I was going to Kara Throw it. But again, opportunity didn’t come up.
Hey Joon in your match I thought you did too many s.lp, slk, s.mp, etc.
Like I understand the purpose of them but I still think you did an unnesscary amount of them.
imo focusing too much on trying to counter hit with only 1 hit vs looking for more opportune moments to execute a full damage combo off repetitive pattern in your opponents “game”
I still like your Ken though, just pointing out constructive criticism.

too much tech. 1 villain hit = 1 tech not more. You click cr.lk+lp more then ones per hit = easier to frame trap you. Dont do it on auto. Think when to do when not.
