zangief: You did unsafe slides way, way, way too much. Chun is not a character that you want to be slide-happy against. A better Chun would have punished pretty much every single one of them. I’d also be more careful about spiral spacing. I saw a few poke-spirals that were a little too close for comfort. And some jumps that went un-anti-aired. You can anti-air Chun for free.
I may be able to get match vids of my own if my local fight night gets a stream going this weekend.
EDIT: Oops, I didn’t even see that link and critiqued the Chun match instead, lol. Oh well.
I’ll give my two cents dude. Your Rose is excellent, you didn’t really do too much wrong. If I was to nit pick I would say at times you were a bit too aggressive, in the Sagat match he jumped over you and out of the corner while you tried to spiral him, when his back is to the wall try to let him make the move, without giving up spacing of course. You’re pressure was really good but I think you just went a bit too far with it sometimes is all, it’s a really nice style to watch though. One other thing is that you might try changing your pokes up a bit. You did st.rh to sweep quite a bit for example and it was just asking to be reversed. Overall though it was solid as all hell, your spacing was good, great pressure, solid combos (your feel for when a normal ss will hit was great). Good shit man.
Not much to add. It’s just my opinion, but AE rose can’t afford to be aggressive. Nearly all the damage i saw you take came from over aggression. Rose has to let them kill themselves most of the time. Your neutral game is just spot on and super solid. You avoided all his fireballs correctly. Ducked when you needed to and jumped when you needed to. Which was i was surprised at all your jump ins. If you can beat him that badly from full screen, why would you NOT do it. After learning the hard way, i found that a lot of time rose’s best course of action is a lack thereof. Let them make the first move and react to that. That’s your best go to move. Nothing. Well, i wouldn’t call spacing nothing. You get the point.
Me struggling vs a friend’s Zangief. First time approaching this m/u as Rose.
Definitely was giving up too much space, and I feel that I was not punishing or spacing as well as I could have. Any other things from him that I should watch out for and/or can punish?

And yeah, I definitely have to mind my jumping/holding on to focus attack for too long.

One thing that might help you up close is using st.forward --> slide. It’s a frametrap against balrog if you space it. And it’s pretty hard to space it wrong. You’ll basically stuff pretty much everything. The frame data doesn’t show it though. Other than that, be conscious of charge. Know when he has down charge and when he has back charge. That’ll help you immensely. Oh and stop throwing fireballs like you’re ryu. Rose’s fireball is more of a ‘come to me’ move you do a handful of times the WHOLE FIRST HALF OF THE MATCH. Practice punishing blocked dash punches with jab spiral(they’re range specific if they’re not canceled from a normal). Other than that don’t be afraid to walk forward and then holding down-back. You’re basically punishing balrog for most of this match. Get him to make mistakes and you’ll win. There are only a handful of instances where you do have the initiative. Lastly, i noticed you were basically backing yourself into the corner. Know all your options for pushing them back(cr. strong, medium fireballs, ex fireballs, slide, st. forward, etc) and gaining ground lost.
I took 4th in a local tournament today, but the highlights are all chopped up into 30 second bits for some reason, and there’s parts missing, so they’re not even worth watching. I wanted critique too.
@anton
I figured Balrog’s jump fierce would deter rose from throwing unsafe fireballs. If spaced correctly, jump fierce even beats cr. fierce. And unlike ryu, rose has no fast reversal. After a fireball, Ryu wants you to jump into his 6 invul 3 startup delayed DP. What can rose do? 13 startup 11 invul spiral? Or 6(10 essentially) startup 7 invul ST? Add that with an extra 8 total frames for EVERY ONE of her fireballs. Those two together make rose’s fireball game horrid. Only characters that have it just as bad are SIM and SAKURA. But both have either more AA options(sim) or a faster and better priority AA(4 frames).
Man that rose cody match had some high level shit. Don’t know if those are real setups or just random buttons to throw off the cody(ill assume the former). Back throw > cr. jab > j. lk in the corner is a crossup not crossup? Forward throw > cr. jab > medium ST is the other one I saw. Too bad he dropped the ball on the corner ex combo when he had it won.
cr. fierce beats jump fierce; cr. fierce has a CHANCE to lose to jump roundhouse; which has less range anyway.
You throw fireballs to gain meter; Rog’s output for damage isn’t even that good.
And once you have meter, U1 stocked, and have him where you want him; you’re fine.
Of course, like against any other characters, you wouldn’t throw a fireball exactly LIKE Ryu where he’s right in front of your face and you do like a lp spark.
Rose has better options against Balrog than Ryu. Balrog beats Ryu worse than Balrog beats Rose; it’s actually a solid fight that seems really hard because of jab and actually one of those match ups where you have to just have decent footsies and knowledge of the match up and play it regularly.
Or do what I do and C/P with Chun Li once in a while lul.
