lol
Here’s another Zangief reference:

This was a day before I had a couple of matches with him, and I uploaded them (the 2 videos). Hopefully this gives more of an idea of how to play against him.
this may seem like a dumb question(i just started playing rose) but why U1 against geif, and for that matter what other char is this the perferred ultra
Those are awful slides, awful sparks, awful spirals, on your part Josh…
Don’t do them that close, they can EASILY be punished.
A vid of a good Cammy player against me.

I wanted to share this even if I lost.
That match was roughly 10 days ago. After playing his Zangief a lot more, I know what to look out for, and what not to do.
Berserk: U1 is really useful when he whiffs Lariats, or if you time his jumps right. I wouldn’t advise doing it too close, because that loses to EX Green Hand. If you don’t want to be in huge trouble on wake-up, go with U2.

ohhhhh yeah.
Why did you use EX Soul Spiral a lot? You shouldn’t really be using it that much, unless you’re trying to end an attack string (such as some of her 1f links - i.e. c.lp, c.lp, c.lk, c.mp, EX SS), or on wake-up if you’re certain that you can punish. You got punished a lot for it, as most were blocked.
I noticed you didn’t punish Dudley’s EX Machinegun Blow. You can punish it, as it is -8 on block.
In Rose vs. Dudley, you want to keep Dudley out with her normals. You didn’t really use much of her s.MK, or s.HK. They are effective zoning tools.
It was my first match of the night. So it was warmup. But you are right. Next time ill do that.
if you hit confirm a c.mp cancel it in a spark and try to fadc more, or at least punish a cross up with c.hp xx spiral and dont try everytime hard links
imo

This is me playing in the first match could anybody give me any advice? I don’t know why I picked U1 btw, it was a stupid move =/
Right at the start. Don’t let Gief near you. Turtle him and shoot sparks at a safe distance.
0:18 - You blocked his (Banishing Flat), and started hitting c.lp for some reason. After a blocked (Banishing Flat), and considering that he didnt cancel backdash away from you, he can be grabbed afterwards and there is nothing he can do. Considering how he had you cornered, this was your opportunity, to grab him, and throw him into the corner, backdash, and proceed throwing sparks.
0:54 - First of all, I don’t know why he would do that. And secondly, I don’t know why you hit s.hk… lol Judging by the distance, you could have easily jumped back, hit mp and punished him.
Also, don’t walk into the corner with him, you are just making it easier on him. Throw sparks at him, make it hard for him to get to you.
1:05 - If you backdash, you should know that there is no way that U1 is going to reach, specially not since he performed a lariat way way long before you even considered using U1. Bad move on your part. If you want to catch a zangief with U1, make sure you either have great advantage on distance, or you cancel a spark, confusing your opponent into throwing out a lariat. Then you will have more than enough time to ultra him.
After this, notice how effective throwing soul sparks at him was.
1:49 - Again, I have no idea why he is doing random (Power Bombs) lol but you had more than enough time to combo that super.
2:08 - You could have used c.mp into a spiral.
2:17 - wow, I don’t know if that was an accident or not. But thats not a good idea. In fact, this seemed like a perfect U1 set-up.
U1 really isnt a bad choice for this match, there was plenty opportunities for you to hit em with it, i would preferably use u1 because this giefs level of play is so mediocre.
Thanks for the advice guys, you really helped! Very detailed and informative, so thank you Just have a question, is it a good idea to use spiral pressure against Zangief or no?
It can depend on the type of player. But I wouldn’t use it as the core of my strategy. LP SPD and Lariat take care of spirals either before contact, or on block when the spiral isn’t safe.
I tend to use more bait tactics vs Gief. like whiffing fast normals to bait out EX Greenhand, Lariat, or SPD. Or focus for the same reason. Gief doesn’t have very good answers to counter focus, so when you want him to give you room, try it out.
Sparks and footsies should be most of what you use in this match.
You can try to Spiral pressure with Zangief, but for the most part, they can be easily punished by Zangief’s throw. If you see my videos against the Zangief player, I got punished with a throw after blocked Spirals at times. As Metroxylon said, I would concentrate on Sparks and footsies. If you can zone Zangief out, he’s going to have a hard time getting in, unless he’s willing to sacrifice damage for it.
great match axel, love your reckless rose. last two rounds were heartbreakers.

ahahahahaha you made me fall from my chair
by the way to first step to kick sim’s spineless a$$ is to remain calm (easy to say, hard to do. I know it perfectly)
then i have 3 strategies:
1 - Pressing. HARD Pressing. With everything you got: focus attack , spirals, normals (execially). Harras him without stopping. Open the hell gate inside his mind. (yes i feel rage too vs sim’s.)
2 - Outzoning him. Stay out of his hp and just FB more than him. Reflect and be carefull, he will soon start to j.hp trying to punish our char huge recovery of FB…when he does, react. Jump and j.mk (longest range of jumping normal i think) or j.hk/hp/ mp(<-best anti air, but you need range, he will jump from far away). In conclusion, let it be him to lose patience.
Btw be carefull he can bait you jumping and back teleporting, and then attack with j.hp. If he does, dont attack and block. then start again or try to get close and start pressing.
3 - random focus attack and prey rofl. Kidding, try to predict and focus attack him.
