This is the exact reason why cops should have voice recorders and cameras in their squad cars, so they can be held accountable for their activities.
How many times have wee personally seen or been a victim of bullshit stops and arrests by cops, or them harrassing unarmed citizens and they blatantly lie on their official reports, always in collusion in other cops. Sure they could be telling the truth (that is a big fucking if in this story), but they have an inherent Conflict of Interest; it is against their best interest to tell the truth about any of their shady dealings. There is no checks and balances to hold these cops accountable for their actions and that is why they can walk around and think they are untouchable.
Plus it makes me sick to my stomach how these racist cocksuckers who zero in on the fucking asshole looters who are taking advantage of a situation, yet mention nothing about the peaceful demonstrators. But oh wait they don’t count because it doesn’t confirm their biases and it distracts to the debate we are having.
Interesting article written by one of President Clinton’s speech writers and policy advisors about the Ferguson incident and how this could have happened almost anywhere: http://bit.ly/1rvaQtK
Showing comparisons between the police and military but only briefly mentioning the looting and vandalism heavily paints a picture of excessive force. The only picture of a civilian has him holding his hands up against a group of armed policemen. Where are the pictures of looters, of the rioting? It only shows the end results and not the reasons that led up to this escalation.
This is just an aside, but it also irks me they are looking strictly at Ferguson, but asking the question “Is this really what America looks like in 2014?” Last I checked, Ferguson is a part of the US that has a huge conflict. If you live in an area where protesting turns to a riot, then yes this is what America looks like. But for me, I don’t see police in full blown riot gear whenever I step outside.
Note: I’m not defending the police nor the citizens of Ferguson. I just think news should at least TRY to be unbiased.
What I think is interesting is that apparently some of the cases where folks in the crowd threw bottles and shit at the police were due to white anarchists who came in from out of town to “protest the system”.
If so that really sucks for people who were really trying to put up peaceful protest. Not helping.
Can anobody explain to me why the police have this level of equipment any way? I knew it was bad, but that’s full armor and shit. They look better armed than soldiers in Iraq. That’s just fucking sad.
A soldier in Iraq apparently did say they were more heavily armed.
As for why they have it, apparently the anti-terrorist bucks that used to go into the military started gradually going into the cops funds, so now cops have APCs and mine-tanks. I mean, if I were a cop, I’d think it was cool to have a fucking tank too.
Just like to say I’m from the area, and I am black, and I can say this (the early onset riots/looting) had been brewing for a long time. There is a hugely disproportionate amount of arrrests/searches of black people in Ferguson compared to whites. I do think the targets of said actions were terribly picked though. I think they should have focused squarely on City Hall, the PD, county courthouse etc. Those private business owners did not deserve to be pillaged like that.
I am glad the looting/rioting has pretty much stopped, and now the peaceful protests have began. The police are on high alert now and are making incredibly DUMB mistakes in handling the situation as it stands. Violating rights all over without due cause or at least martial law.
The protesters need to understand that they must let the investigation play out before they wild out too much. The cops/mayor need to understand that the investigation needs to be done at a faster pace then they are allowing. The are also handling the investigation poorly, so many witnesses are stepping forward with information that would appear vital to a case yet they haven’t been interviewed.
Word coming in that the State Police are taking over – based on my time living in MO, that’s a marginal upgrade, since STL County has had almost exclusively political oversight until just recently.
