I honestly feel some of the same frustrations. The lack of a wakeup doesn’t bother me too much (though some aspects of the EX Senpu/Tatsu’s behavior annoy me)… but I feel limited in a few areas. Some of it is a lack of comprehension on my part and I’m hoping for some advice with things that are making me rather upset:
Once my opponent starts turtling up, I’m at a loss for how to deal with them. I can either train them to spam Shoryuken/uppercut-style wakeups (which only the stupid players do) and win easily enough, or worry that they’re going to toss one out and there goes my pressure game; they get out. I’m at a loss for how to truly, properly pressure my opponents without just handing them a way out due to fearing their (oft-used, if I give them even a slight chance to justify using it) wakeup Shoryuken.
I also have trouble dealing with return pressure. This is surely something I’m doing wrong however, as it happens with nearly every character I use. Opponent will pin me down with a block-string, then just keep going for constant cross-ups that beat my anti-air options and I can’t find any other way out, leaving me to block until I either guess wrong or miss a tech and get thrown. I know I’m doing something wrong (and am doing it regardless of which character I play), but it seems even worse with Guy. I would love to figure out how to get out of this.
Finally, I don’t quite understand how Guy’s ground combos are supposed to work. Final Fight/Bushin Chain misses against crouch, but s.mp into s.fp also misses some crouching foes. This suggests I need to either find some engine mechanic that forces a stand, or some way to discourage them from crouching… but I don’t know what that might be. I’ve honestly never played a character like Guy before, and while he fascinates me it feels like I’m playing with a major handicap that I don’t understand how to overcome.
If there’s any info on how to deal with these issues, I’d love to be pointed in the right direction. Guy’s a fun character design, I’m just not understanding something quite right it seems…
I was super excited about Guy when the game came out, but as I continue on I get more and more discouraged. I main Balrog and have Guile/Abel as my secondaries but I wanted a new character so I chose Guy. I love his combos, corner game, and mix-ups but its been an uphill battle with Guy. I’m at about a 56% win ratio with him but I just can’t solidify my game.
Yeh I love how a rushdown character can’t actually do anything against turtlers… yet rufus loves those situations… Basically he’s like a vega except with command specials… if you have the life lead learn to run away… except that doesnt work well either…
Return pressure is once against pointless cuz none of his reversals come out instantly… i did a mk spin kick and was grabbed yet the reversal sign popped up… and it seems especially online he likes to get stuck when you try to do something or move him…i litterally try nd mash out an ex spin kick when some scrub is jus mashin a jab combo nd some times you see him flinch up nd backwards yet doesnt do anything…
Thats the real problem after a while people will figure out that without meter even his reversals are useless… while they can spam srk’s nd nonsense knowing that the only pressure he has it through his links into target since his chain combo alone is useless… What a joke…
Then again this is typical Capcom Brand… typical business image bunch of lies and lack of effort in key areas… If this game wasnt so spam reversal friendly Guy would probably own… its funny how a broken system nd mechanics unbalances the game and hurts characters… thats just flawed design…
I’d rather have SSF4 than MvC2… When I lose in SSF4, at least I know why I lost, it’s cause I messed up somewhere. In MvC2, you don’t know why you lost, the other guy overwhelmed you.
SSF4 has defense as a core component of the gameplay, and if you can’t wrap your head around that… I’m sorry… I mean, they even rate you for defense after a fight, lol. I don’t appreciate fighting games that only concentrate on offense.
that is true but then you run into problems if you use that too much because of that move being focused happy… you have to take risks on different spacings still on overhead special that doesnt at least trade…with a crouch move that in more fine tuned games like blazblue an overhead would completely negate…yeh say what you will about BB it kinda spoils you when you compare game mechanics like proper body properties physics for moves and grabs so that you dont get power bombed for sticking the nail on your pinky out
Don’t see why you feel the need to always take the risks… Like my grandmother used to say, “why take the chance?”
I mean, sometimes I meaty elbow somebody’s wakeup because I’m fairly certain that I won’t get punished (from experience), but if its Ryu/Ken/Sagat/Chun-li/Sakura/Dan etc. I don’t do it, because I know I’ll get stuffed… You just gotta take what you’re given and make something out of it. I don’t do much on people’s wake up because it is hard most of the time, but if I’m in the proper spacing for a cross up j. mk, I’ll always do it… Yes, I know its hard.
Just take what you’re given and don’t pretend it’s anything else… We’re all still learning here mate
LOL MVC2 is also capcom so i dont really see where ur argument is there… and regards to the defense rank thats basuically how much damage u dont take not really defense dependent… nd you guys act as if i dont kno the game cuz im pointing out serious flaws that really show a lack of development… If you question my skills with Guy nd u hav a xbox360 look up my name on the leaderboards for guy…l dont scroll down too far … actually if you select N.America you dont hav to scroll at all… and overall dont go past 40…
Just because i bring up arguments that question why certain things were established does not make those individuals scrubs its called intelligence and the will to question authority when things are plain out flawed… while some of you Guys enjoy taking it up the butt and accept things for what they r… kinda like most of the non-voting population in the country…
In regards to dealing with turtles, it’s difficult but the only way is to get them to do something stupid by baiting them. It’ll work for now but I’m not so sure in the future when people learn how to deal with Guy. Not that it matters, all offensive Guy ftw.
lol, as if I didn’t know how they scored the defense ranks. The point is the game was made with defense in mind, not only offense. I’m not here for an argument, but I’ll say that I was not referring to your comment about capcom, although I think you do take it a bit far.
In other words, take a damned chill pill… This game has been out for what… not even two weeks yet. Congrats on being near the top of the BEGINNING.
Switch characters then. You seem like you want instant gratification and are not willing to work towards workarounds for deficiencies. Perhaps you should become part of the solution.
Check out the el fuerte forum. Specifically the matchup thread. People are contributing damn well everyday as far as things to look out for experiences vs certain characters and so on. Why not try doing the same for Guy. Help the Guy community and yourself in that respect.
Also. Try looking over the replay channel.
I think it’s obvious that some characters (Cody, Dudley) right of the bat have things that scream top tier and yeah I doubt Guy will be top tier. But I think it’s a touch to early to just completely consider Guy to be trash.
Knowledge is a big factor in this game. Give it some time.
Dudley and Cody have their flaws too. Cody is kind of free on wake up, and Dudley can’t get in easily. BUT I kind of agree, Guy is maybe the worst of the new character with makoto…
Bad non ex wake up option ( and even with meter, an ex tatsu is risky as fuck ), trouble to get in on turtle ( shame for a supposed RSHDOWN character ), USELESS ULTRA hurts him a lot. .
I think guy is underdevelopped too… What a shame for such a cool character. So in my thought, if you like guy, just stick with his alpha version and boycott his ssf4 design =p
Omg it happened. Last night while playing Akuma i got combo-thrown into super and lost. I dont think the Akuma had any idea what he was doing but when I saw 16 hits on his super I was flippin out. Ill try and find the video and upload it soon. It was total crap
I dont know much about Guy, but he is alot of fun. If you want someone with no weakness, play Ryu.
I think the SF4 and SSF4 systems were designed for Ryu. People act like he his nerfed but he is still really good. Maybe it’s just in my head, but I get the feeling Capcom wants Ryu to be the best.
It’s kinda funny, I remember all those cries for Dudley and how everyone on SRK was saying they want to main him. I see not that many Dudleys and so many Ryu’s online.
I don’t for the life of me understand how Dhalsim is supposed to be “free” (I know you didn’t claim this but others have) because a good Dhalsim can shut out Guy very easily. Gouken on the other hand is a complete joke and I didn’t even realize until playing one a few days ago that you can completely slide under his regular horizontal firebal with just roundhouse. Like I said, I won’t be giving up on Guy, but I’ve gone back to playing Bison and Gen again. It’s nice to have at least one character that you know won’t have any major issues in many matchups, fun character or no.
