This post actually reminded me of something else…since everyone comes from different living conditions, they may not also be aware of what the officers patrolling which particular community are aware of what goes down. This effects how the officers responds. And even myself, who grew up in east LA and was told to all cops were shitty people, grew to understand there is a terrible myopia involved. An officer spends their day patrolling shit neighborhoods, seeing all kinds of shit all day that we don’t know about
Think about it…do the posters here really think the PD from some affluent and low crime neighborhood will respond the same way to 911 calls as some PD where officers are under fire? officers that are in charge of policing high crime areas? Maybe a safer neighborhood PD takes way more caution and patience with the kid who was shot, but the officer from a slum, high crime, someone shot yesterday type neighborhood is way more likely to see threats. Black, white, hispanic…crime areas PERIOD
All this factors in. But again, people don’t want to put things into proper context. It’s all emotion, knee jerk, reactionary responses.
So this excuses and enables them to continue lying to the public, the very people they are supposed to protect? Put into the proper context that police department have just proven they aren’t worthy of trust.
But again, people want to give them excuses. I ain’t do nuthin massa I swares I’s just gettin my ID please don’t shoot massa. Fuck out of here.
The reason the kid died is because he pretended to pull a gun on police. How are the police suppose to know its a fake gun?? Anybody stupid enough to pull a gun (fake or real) will get shot. The logical thing to do, is to surrender. Thats what most people with common sense do.
This isn’t an issue of the “suspect”, really. Race and even age is irrelevant. With how this was handled, whether or not the gun was even real is irrelevant.
What are police told in the academy? Is “shoot first, ask later” their unofficial motto now? For fucks sake, they made no serious effort to apprehend him. From the video, nothing resembling a warning was given. If this is the amount of discretion and accountability our police have, then what makes it any better than leaving law enforcement to a volunteer militia or even a street gang? At least those alternatives aren’t reliant on using underhanded tactics to make money.
The unprofessionalism of modern police in these matters is what makes the recent headlines so troubling. You aren’t with the Gestapo; killing should be used in emergencies ONLY. And what’s worse, is that departments won’t even admit to doing wrong because they might receive some penalty for killing innocents. How the hell is it that the people with the least respect for the law and due process are in charge of practicing them?
You can open carry in Ohio legally. Putting a handgun in your waistband is NOT open-carry. That’s considered concealed carry. For those you most definitely need a license.
On a different note, that’s why that dude who got shot at Wal-Mart was some bullshit. Even if it was a real gun they should have never fired. It’s an open-carry state and if it were a real gun he was well within his rights.
Well that went out the window when he was on video pointing his gun at people and acting erratically. The initial 911 call said he was pointing it at people and scaring the shit out of people. I know he said he thought it was fake twice, but i dont think the cops would have acted any different even if relayed that information. Those dudes rolled up like they were seriously trying to risk their own lives to stop the next version of columbine in a park.
I dont like how the cops rolled up like a dumber a-team, rather then try to de-escalate the situation from a safe distance for themselves and the public, if shit went hella left, and even if it didnt matter, i think the dispatcher should have relayed the info that was given to her, and let the rest be up to the cops discretion. Its not your job (911 dispatcher) to just relay what you think is useful information.
If he was brandishing a gun and doing nothing with it, just on his waist, never pointed it at anyone, and put his hands up when cops rolled up ready to get it in, then this would be waaaaaaay more tragic.I dont even think in open carry states with extremely loose laws, you can walk around with your gun in hand anyways. It has to be holstered or on your shoulder. You cannot just walk around talking on your phone while waiving a gun around, and thats normal and legal. lol
