Im just sad that my cool steel pkmn are no longer the all in one tanks they once were though im ok with it being the price to pay for giving poison now some more use outside of grass pkmn and toxic. Im still going to use them but ill need to rethink my teams. My poor Bronzong though and Jirachi…
MegaMawile is gonna be a boss. Dragon/Poison immunity, 4x Bug resist, weak to Ground and Fire, everything else is resisted or neutral. Not to mention increased defenses and Huge Power doubling its Attack stat.
Defensively has access to Intimidate before Mega Evolving plus Iron Defense/Stockpile/Pain Split for tanking hits. Offensively can Swords Dance that massive Attack for sweeping with an amazing movepool.
It’s only weaknesses are a relatively low HP and low Speed, not to mention the known drawbacks of Mega Evolution (forced to hold the Mega Stone, can be your only Mega, so kind of predictable)
It’s gonna be one of the most used Megas in competitive circles, bet it.
So, Gengar’s gonna be a huge threat now, Metagross just got the final nail added to it’s coffin, Fighting types will have to run Poison Jab or Iron Head just for coverage on Fairies, and Gardevoir probably just became OU material. Now I gotta see the pseudo-legend, and re-memorize type matchups.
50 bucks says the Rock/Dragon fossil mon ends up being another Rampardos.
Competitive noob question. What is considered a “good” pokemon for battling? Seems like type matchs up is a thing of the past with the inclusion of ev/iv training, genders, abilities, moods and all the didferent type of items pokes can hold. Im sure I can’t just slap some toxic or fire orbs on houndoom or crawdaunt and call them competitive.
Ones with good enough base stats and move pools to fill a role. Type coverage and resistances are another thing to keep in mind. If you’re creative enough, you can make almost any Pokemon fit for competitive battling, but some are just a lost cause.
Type match ups still play a crucial role in the meta game.
A “good” Pokemon for battling depends on what kind of team you want. If you’re going for a hyper offensive team, you may want to use a Pokemon with light screen and reflect to help strong Pokemon use boosting moves. Try Serperior. It’s not a good offensive or defense Pokemon but it has the move pool for solid team support if played right.
Speaking of Serperior… if Contrary Snivy is released soon Gen 6 is a done deal for me. Right now I’m just gonna buy a 2DS and use the PokeBank apps to hold my Black 2 Pokemon.
I like Swirlix*(I love weird, gimmicky Pokemon)* and can definitely see it making an impact in Doubles where spamming Spore can win Championships lol. It’s also a perfect ‘fuck you’ to Breloom’s trolling ass in Singles.
Depending on Stats and Moves, of course, I think it could be nice. I’m using one regardless… But hell, I’m gonna be rotating so many Pokemon in and out of my squad that every one of the new mons will get a go.
Gamefreak tends to design newer Pokemon, moves, and abilities more towards 3-on-3 and Doubles/Triples*(needs more love)/Rotation(needs even more love, Rotation Battles are awesome)* Seems they could give two fucks about full 6 vs. 6 these days.
Strangely enough I pick pokemon based on how they fought in the anime lol. When ash fought that one dude with the swampert and arcanine. I loved arcanine afterwards, houndoom, crawdaunt, alakazam, scizor, heracross…yea I totally went on a different tangent lol. I need to see more of the gen 6 pokemon. The fire starter looks cool, I hope honedge evolves.
Think about those three on the same team and you’ll stop overhyping fairies.
I predict fairies to be just above average, and that’s being generous especially with numerous current Pokemon like Gardevoir (forgive me I love Gardevoir) having poor base defense to expose.
But damn I’ve been pushed away with the Steel nerf. That’s gonna leave a sour taste in my mouth until the Gen 3 remake.
Considering you need to give up a hold item to Megaevolve, M-Chomp loses Sand Veil (Which was part of the reason it was banned), and there are more options to take Dragons (and T-Tar) down now… It’s not the OP’d team you think it will be.
I’ve never played Pokemon competitively before but almost seems like every other Pokemon is like banned for some reason. Has the series really been that unbalanced or are people just being really impatient not wanting to wait for the imperfect balance to take effect?
Well when it comes to competitive battling, it’s essentially like understanding why FG characters are good. Based on tools and context. Unfortunately, looks and how they did in the anime don’t translate one for one.
For example, Charizard is the fucking King in the anime. He’s not very good now (though Mega Evo might change things). Fire/Flying typing screws him pretty hard because of the context of Stealth Rock. 50% damage every time he touches the field. In other words, short of having a random ass leftovers, 2 switches into SR and it dies. Also his movepool is not the best. If he hits you with a Sun Boosted Fire Special Attack, most will get wrecked but a lot of good things need to go down for that to happen. Outside of that, his coverage is weak. It’s not the best at handling different threats. He’s very linear.
Compare that to Volcarona. Has the same 50% Weakness to SR but is considered FAR better. Now why is that? Well having Pseudo-Legendary stats help. Definitely outpace Zard’s. On top of that, Bug typing is a better type to have right now than Flying. Its coverage moves are much better. And it has the BEST stat boosting move in the game in Quiver Dance.
And out of your list of anime Pokemon badass list…well Scizor is still the best. Heracross and Alakazam still do work.
Pyroar’s all, “Who’s a derpy lion cub now, bitches?” Fire types stay looking badass.
A little from column A and a little from column B… When you have over 700 individual characters, some characters and tactics are going to be just flat-out better than others. The problem comes in with a small sect of internet guys who believe that the best way to play is to either minimize or completely eradicate the random factors of the game.
That randomness can allow for a low-tier mon like Bidoof to take out a team full of guys like Arceus and Mewtwo instead of getting curb-stomped.
Whereas most people(myself included) find that absolutely hilarious and inspiring, these people do not. They believe that Pokemon should be a game of pure skill(which its not) and bend over backwards trying to “eliminate randomness.” There are even people who wish to get rid of critical hits! So, they ban and clause and create a dozens of arbitrary rules to create a metagame that’s all about timely switching and Batman Gambits that really takes away a lot of the options you have in the game, because so-and-so is “too overcentralizing.”
TL;DR: A lot of “competitive Pokemon players” are also Smashboards regulars… That’s all that needs to be said about the level of scrubbery it takes to ban a fucking Bidoof.
I hardly even visit Youtube these days*(gets worse with each revision)*. When I did, the PBR vids certain people would do 0Yarko, Marinaneon, CrusaderNova, etc. were cool, because they all had their own style and approach to playing… Nowadays its all the same shit I see everywhere else and its boring as fuck.
There was a couple of uploaders under the name Underdog Brothers who were doing some unique stuff, but they’ve seemed to have stopped playing Pokemon altogether.
