…not like I didn’t bring this up multiple times in this topic…
Water/Fighting is nuts, 2 great offensive STABs centered around Waters defensive bases/typing is very appealing. Fire/Psychic will maintain the glass-cannon makeup with powerful new abilities like Psyshock and Fire STABs. Grass/Dark will be in the doghouse for poor resistances and limited movepool, but there’s some appeal for hitting Ghost hard.
The question is, how will the stats of the Water/Fighting starter (assuming that it does come down to that) compare to Keldeo?
Grass/ Dark can be redeemed if it has a unique trait or excellent movepool. Probably not OU status though.

I don’t look for the assumed Water/Fighting starter to be faster than Keldeo. 108 base speed is respectable in today’s metagame, but Keldeo does not warrant the use of popular moves such as Close Combat. If not for Secret Sword, Keldeo’s fighting abilities would be somewhat wasted on a 72 atk base.
One problem with dark types is how it was made to be specially specific typing from it’s G2 introduction, but GF has slowly turned dark types to hit more physically where almost no moves reach 100 base power. This is a problem when they continue to boost fighting bases and how the type hits more effectively/harder. I would much prefer something like grass/fire because they both work well together and cover each others weaknesses well.
Chespin better not have a bunch of recoil moves. Recoil moves were most of Emboar’s moveset.
One other note, I wouldn’t expect Chespin to have any of the common support moves Grass types have(i.e. Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Synthesis… it might get Growth). I expect its stats and moveset to be very offense-based, so I’m thinking Razor Leaf, Swords Dance, Leaf Blade, Energy Ball, Grass Knot, Work Up, Night Slash, Bite(but no Crunch), Double-Edge, Solarbeam, obligatory Hyper Beam/Giga Impact possibly Dark Pulse if it becomes Dark type.
It will probably have a spread similar to Charizard/Infernape in which both offensive stats/speed are its best stats.
Serebii.net sez the three starters have been confirmed to be pure types (pure Grass, etc.). But that’s just the starters. I still hold out hope for the Grass/Dark, Fire/Psychic, Water/Fighting theory…
I think most pretty much assume that the dual typing will come in through Evolution, like every other starter dual type. I can’t actually think of a starter that’s Dual Type in their first forms. Bulbasaur was pure Grass until Ivysaur right?
Bulbasaur was always Grass/Poison, straight to Venasaur. For some reason, GF found it a necessity to dual type Grass with Poison early on.
Save for Tangela most Grass types were either part Poison or some lame second typing. (Paras)
Poison/ Steel dual type w/ Levitate… hm…

Sounds like a metal Gyrados that has poison. Or a flying Steelix with fangs.

That would end up being a floating syringe, or some shit lol…
Grass/poison is a pretty good defensive type. Water/fighting/lightning are all good resists, ice weakness sucks but I think that’s it(poison resists bug right?).
Man, I’d like to see Ice step it up. I’ve always been a champion for Ice, but being weak to Stealth Rock, Fighting and Steel Types…ouch.
I was actually thinking along those lines in my mind, but like with a mosquito-ish Pokemon. lol
Neutrality to Fighting and Psychic is a major plus, and two x4 resistances to Bug and Grass isn’t too shabby either. I know if Gamefreak made such a Pokemon it would have to have that x4 weakness to Ground. bah…
balloons…
ice is such a good attacking type though, hits ground, dragon, flying, grass, there’s lots of quad effectives in there too. It’s like the go to special attack type. it is pretty awful defensively though, being weak to rock, fighting, and fire are all REALLY bad types to be weak too. Steal weakness isn’t too big a deal unless gen 5 brought in some crazy steel attack that I’m forgetting.
Steel isn’t too bad except Scizor exists and is still the number 1 point in the game and has Technician Boosted Bullet Punch most likely backed with Choice Band.
Ice-Type is the Glass Cannon of Pokemon. Wrecks anything it lays its hands on but it does NOT want to be touched back.
Yeah scizor was a mistake imo, absolutely dominant and has been forever. Game would be much better with no rocks and no scizor.
Yeah, but Scizor looks too cool to get rid of.
