I’m not sure about Spencer bodying Vergil. I’ve heard stuff, but I don’t feel like a lot of it applies in practice outside of yolo bionic arm. I don’t really think any character counters Vergil, just there are ones that have better options against him than others. Sentinel comes to mind as another character with solid tools vs. his mashy stuff.

Nemesis. Tentacles reach through swords and armor forces Vergil to play honest. Vergil’s lack of air mobility and strong keep-away allow Nemesis to get in on him. Furthermore, air H hits on both sides, making it an effective way of hitting Vergil when he teleports.

Spencer needs meter to threaten Vergil, which is why I don’t see him as a counter. I’d put Joe, Ammy, and Hulk as better counters than him as well.

Honestly, it kinda seems like Nemesis has better matchups than his tier would suggest. Maybe this is because I’m an idiot but I lose to my friend’s Nemesis more often than I should when I play Nova. It’s hard to zone him since the air-to-ground missile goes through any shield. Mid range, noodles fuck with everything. Close up is best but it’s not always easy to get there.

I’m sure @Marvelo has some insight on this matchup, but it seems like one you have to play more patiently than usual… for a low tier character.

I also think Tron is a 5-5 against Nova. Hard to zone her out (her normals just blow through projectiles like crazy), and if they have a good defensive assist (like the ever-popular Shopping Cart) she can be hard get close to. Again, a match you have to play patient.

The best way I found to fight nemesis is force him to be at SJ height or be above him. He can’t do anything with that and he loses the ability to call assist so he is vunerable. Once you get in though that ass is grass.

Am I the only one that thinks of shopping cart as a more multipurpose-offensive assist?

shopping cart = horizontal get-off-me assist, lockdown for mixups, fireball that hits like a beam (10-11hits), potential crossover-counter assist, and lastly a great assist to use in early combo if you want to lvl frank up via dhc or tac

Viper fucking rapes Nemesis, that’s for sure. The two Nemesis players I’ve fought at majors both got 3-0’d by my Viper/Missiles/Vajra.

Yeah all viper has to do is charge eye lasers, seismo and alternate between calling missiles and vajra. Match is free.

Yeah, Nemesis’ fat ass get’s destroyed by Viper. And Zero. And Morrigan…

I would only keep him as a counter to Vergil. He’s ass because his other top tier match-ups are really, REALLY bad.

Re: Spencer vs Vergil

If it’s a one on one situation, and Spencer has meter and XF and the life lead, he can just sort of stay still and react to anything Vergil does with THC (instant autocorrect Bionic Arm). If he doesn’t catch Vergil, XF to safety (though oftentimes Vergil will have to burn his XF first too). If Vergil ended up doing air teleport, XF to command air throw.

That’s a lot of ifs though.

In general, Spencer’s buttons are a bit too slow to really trouble Vergil’s speed and range. You want to threaten Vergil into blocking, and then going for 50/50 command throw options, probably through assist. Predictable Vergil teleports can be caught with Bionic BOmber, but that is slow and telegraphed as all hell.

In short, I think it’s uphill, but at least he has a good options to shut Vergil down, especially if you’re good with using Bionic Arm to blast through an attack, then XF to command throw if applicable.

Vergil’s weakness is that his poor defense and reliance on teleports for mix-ups mean that he, like a lot of Vergil scrubs, does not want to block. Anyone who can make him play respectfully has a chance. That’s why people favor Spencer. I personally see a bit more value in just up and running Hulk or Nemesis.

I noticed something when watching EVO finals: When Justin was really moving Storm around, Zero had trouble catching her. Is air mobility the key to fighting our current threats? Characters like Trish, Phoenix, Magneto, Storm, Morrigan, MODOK, and Spider-Man seem like they could completely out maneuver ground-game-gods like Zero, Viper, and Vergil. Part of the problem could be that some of the most popular players for those characters don’t have Strider, Jam Session, or Missiles. Thoughts?

Hey guys, How do you fight the Captain America Matchup with anyone thats a mid-long range fighter? I usually fight him with dante and unless I get room to go into DT I always lose that matchup. The only time I ever win, is if I get dorm in enough space with spells charged or I decide to play wolverine instead of a Dante team. I understand the general footsies with the matchup but caps shield is obnoxious for dante at mid-range. Dante also can’t take a hit so if Cap confirms dante is dead (I NEED MY DANTE!!!) LOL

Cap is still free to large normals. Dante’s best tool in the Cap match-up is his normals. Also, Cap’s mix-ups are pretty fair unless he has something like Drones or Bolts, so blocking is actually okay against him.

Use more air play to nullify the shield slash. Then just work your way in with an assist or charge up an air play and follow it towards him.

I’d be a little cautious about Dante’s normals versus Cap. Captain America’s normals are faster than Dante’s, and his charging stars start up in 5 frames too.

Rather, I think Dante’s move set (specials, devil trigger), aerial ability, full-screen and zoning capabilities are his best tool against Cap.

Cap ay jump height will beat Dante at jump height because of the horizontal range of shield skills and air play going downwards. Plus trying contend with him means certain death if you mess up air play. If you try go Sj air play you will likely miss him and you will then get hit with shield slash, skills or cartwheels Mixup and assist. Caps normals are faster so if he moves on on you especially with iron man backing him Dante is at his mercy. Cs seemingly beats all Dante ground options. I have tried a standing light or stinger call assist Mixup and caps punish the assist or Dante sometimes with charging stars. That matchup honestly seems like an 8-2 matchup when cap has the mentioned assist vs my Dante team.

well when he’s on the ground i would try and bait a charging star with normals canceled into bold cancel block, try to come under a shield slash and aa with a standing normal or crystal.

obviously everyone agrees that popping DT gives dante a much better matchup.

Nemesis can fight those characters but he needs the proper assist.
Plasma beam, log trap, bolts, bombs, ballon bomb, orbital grudge, jam session…
Granted vs Morrigan its an all in plink dashing, Xfactor cancel the second fireball, command throw
hail mary but it can be done.
