Petition for arcade release of SSF4

Glad to know Ono is holding it down and fighting for it. I am assuming he said no arcade release in the beginning just to put pressure on Capcom HQ.

This is not the 90s anymore.

Third party Japanese developer/publisher dominance has fallen considerably, console sales figures in the West have exploded, and every quarterly market report shows that arcades are declining in Japan.

Big Japanese devs can’t pull that shit anymore if they want to stay in business. And they don’t. That’s why we get all these Japanese-made games going cross-platform, despite the fact that the 360 is selling like shitcakes in Japan. Why we’ve seen SCIV go straight-to-console.

The only worry I have is the trend that some Japanese devs, namely Konami, have adopted. They outsource projects to random Western dev studios and churn out shit that supposedly “catered” to western audiences but in actuality it’s just shit.

I am a HUGE advocate for SSF4 getting an arcade release.

My biggest fear would be that if there was no arcade release, then Japan would continue to play the current arcade SF4, and top players worldwide would follow suit in an effort to be in step with the best competition (Japan).

Because SSF4 is having gameplay changes to the entire cast, it would not just be the Japan SF4 arcade game + new characters like the console release of SF4 was.
So console top players moving on to SSF4 (if there was no SSF4 arcade release) would be training up in a version that would not prepare them for playing vs. Japan.
And most top players will tell you they want to be playing the version with the best competition and that trains them for the top tourneys.

In addition, with existing US players so invested in the current balancing/mechanics of SF4, they might be reluctant to switch to a new version that:

  1. looks the same
  2. costs them more money
  3. requires them learning a new system/tweaks
  4. might have nerfed their favorite character
  5. the top players in the world don’t play
  6. just doesn’t blow them away and make them think DAMN, I NEED TO OWN THIS!
  7. sure it offers new characters, but the console exclusive characters in SF4 aren’t that played, and MvC2/SF3 teaches us that characters that aren’t played don’t really matter at the end of the day.
  8. they already have SO much time invested in Championship Mode
  9. they already spent SO much time unlocking characters

With top Japan players still in SF4, tourneys like SBO still in SF4, and console players worldwide already owning and being familiar with SF4, SSF4 might be destined for a failure unless it convinces to players to adopt it AND console players that they need to upgrade.

And if they DO make an arcade release, CapCom should make SURE the top arcade players LIKE the new version and can be convinced to make the transition to the new version.

This is a weird idea, but if no arcade version is made, CapCom could just setup a PS3/360 in arcades with the games inside. It would be less costly than to make a completely new board.

I am for an arcade SSF4.

I hope Capcom reconsiders.

Online play is far from perfect, and it’s true what Reno says about the importance of having SSF4 in Japanese game centers. I think it would actually hurt Capcom in the long run if no arcade release was made.

Everything Reno says is true.

If someone lives in an area where internet services are not available, I highly doubt they live near an arcade either.

UPDATE:

I have updated the first post of this thread with the recent news from the Capcom blog, which pretty much says “wait for the arcade release, cause its coming eventually”.

Also - I would like to thank the people who took the time to actually READ and post a thoughtful reply. You know who you are.

I knew this thread was going to be controversial and probably pretty intense, and I KNOW how online petitions often have very little effect on big corporations, but I figured this debate was probably necessary and was going to happen anyway.

I think this thread has pretty much run its course, the moderators will of course decide its fate as always.

The arcade version is far from confirmed. It is still very much in doubt. Check the last page of discussion. Those who want an arcade release need to continue to make their voices heard.

sigh It’s not so much that us console people are like “Fuck arcade” as much as it is the arcade people saying “Fuck console”. I can personally say that living in the midwest makes it very hard to play good competition outside of traveling to tourney out of my town. In between tourneys the only way I can play is on console. The problem is that many of the top players (i.e., east/west coast) have this notion that there’s something wrong with playing on console, as though it’s not recognized by serious fighting gamers. Many of these guys grew up living or still live very near active arcades, and thus they don’t have a reason to support consoles. Why would you if you can play the genuine article??? However, in a country where arcades are no longer thriving, consoles provide many of us the chance to play the games that our arcades (or lack thereof for that matter) don’t support. In fact, in central Illinois I have to drive 3 hours north to Chicago to go to an arcade that has SFIV. Now, why would I do that if I can just pay $60 for a home copy and play as much as I’d like? lol You say “…good shit arcade supporters” as though we’re not arcade supporters. The fact is, if we had arcades the way you guys do, then we WOULD support them. However, because we don’t we feel chastised or looked down upon by those that actually have an arcade scene. Not trying to start a fight here; I’m just sharing my input. :china:

SSF4 not only needs an arcade release, its needs a U.S. arcade release at roughly the same time that Japan gets one.

It’s silly that US arcade owner’s have had to import Japanese version of SF4.

Hopefully it will happen, but it all comes down to whether or not Capcom thinks it will be profitable.

:china:

You sir are awesome.

This game NEEDS to be released in arcades. This is important not only for the Japanese people but for the entire SF comunity

Well said.

:china:

Very true ^^

I’m also wonder how well they did with their Arcade sales. Some one out there has the data. I’m sure it can be found. Don’t worry about how you reacted to me. I completely understand your frustration. I voted yes to support the petition for an Arcade release. Know the owner of Family Funtime Arcade in Granada Hills, CA. I would hate to see him miss out on potential cash if the game is not released in the Arcade.

Peace

uh i dont know of any top players that say fuck console these days (USA based) a lot of OG’s have posted in this thread and said “embrace the future” (obviously referring to consoles)…back in america theres really no choice. i dont like console, but i play on it and i played online until i left to go to japan. i think your fears are a little over blown man.

its not really “fuck console” its more like “we dont want a specific part of the world to be left out since it hurts everyone directly/indirectly.” at least thats the way i see it. the people who say fuck console (in the USA) at this point need to get a fuckin clue lol

also the arcade version has NOT been confirmed or anything no reason to stop asking for it.

Likewise, I don’t know any console players that literally say “Fuck arcade”. I thought we were making an exaggerated generalization…

 My fears??? lol Sorry for chuckling, but based on my post, what fears do you believe I have, Artie? My post was, literally, me saying “I think Group A feels this way, while Group B feels this way.” Frankly, I think you might have misinterpreted what I was saying which is sort of inexcusable considering how black-and-white my comment was. You just took what I said and tried to make it sound like I was some paranoid conspiracy theorist that thinks all these evil arcade owners and players are out to put us console players in camps or something. Perhaps deduction isn’t your strong skill.

Still, I respect your opinion and admire your hair style. And I completely agree that the arcade scene is still an invaluable part of the fighting game community that should put in a museum not cast out like it didn’t just fuel 2 decades of knowledge and learning.

you guys are fucking idiots. If you expect anything to be discovered or the game taken to it’s highest lvl you need arcades. the japanese have the best fighting scene in the world and it revolves around the arcades. I’d honestly like to see what they could do/discover with the console/new characters.

If you don’t think not releasing a arcade version won’t hurt the community you’re retarded.all i have to say is if they really don’t release in arcades, you can expect all the new characters to suck for a very long time cause shit doesn’t get discovered online. it gets discovered in the arcades where top players congregate.

At this point i think its safe to say capcom is leaning T’wards an arcade release.
lets hope so at least. it suck so bad if there isnt one…worse comes to worse were gonna have to “embrace the future” of console competitive gaming…cant just drop SF cuz the gaming scene is changing.

I wonder, even if they did skip and arcade release if the Japanese would do like some arcades here do. Building a cab with a 360 in it and putting it on a timer with street fighter 4 inside like the arcade in omaha has. Its for sure the Japanese won’t take capcom not giving them an arcade release.
