you went to the wrong places or at bad times. did u go to mist 2 @ umeda or sega avion @ namba? cause i dont have a problem finding comp at either of these 2 places. also video city reno (where i recorded my vids at) had all the grandmasters (nike, chari, uryo) there at once so maybe u didnt know where to go.

Nah, an arcade release as well as a console release would be POSITIVE, but you can’t expect Capcom to sink a lot of money into a medium that they have known to be dying for quite some time now. Kinda like how GM just dropped Saturn.

Add a zero to that number and you are much closer to an accurate figure.

SB4 has (last time I checked) an estimated ~300 players signed up for SF4 alone.

And its just a midwest tourney…it is not even close to the entire US scene…and the US scene is not even close to half of the total worldwide scene.

Sure, I can add a Zero to than number but it still would not justify the realese of expensive Arcade hardware. I can add two zeros to that number and it still would not justify an arcade release. In order to generate the kind of motivation it would take to warrent an arcade release in these dark, economic times, a substantial number of customers must be willing to purchase a unit. Being that the Arcade scene is pretty much gone, the chances of that hapening are close to zero. You have to look at this from a business perspective. You want to reach the widest possible audience but at the same time, you do not want to abandon your core fan base.

How do you suppose you do that without going into the “Red?” The most logical way is to deliver the game via console. That way, the casual players and harcore players alike still have access to the game. I’m all for an Arcade release, but I’m not going to bitch about one not being made. I’m just going to deal with the cards that have been delt to me. That’s all I’m trying to say.

No arcade release means greatly reduced competition. You can’t step into an arcade and fight dozens of people a day anymore. Now it’s limited mostly to your friends at your house unless there’s a local tournament going on.

I think it’s easy to say we don’t need an arcade release when you’re someone who’s already spent years leveling up in them, and you’ve got most of your fundamentals down. What about new players coming up? Where are they supposed to go for regular competition and training?

Well, where were they going when SFIV was first released? Nowhere, because odds are, they didn’t have an arcade close by with SFIV anyway. Isn’t the number of arcades with SFIV still less than 2 dozen?

Besides, you’ll always have certain players who do more with a character than anyone else could, and if the game is severely limited to one region and one format, we’ll be losing a lot of these players and the things they could have shown us. Imagine Boxer in A3 without Apoc, Akuma without BAS, Q without Kuroda, Urien without RX, Hugo without Hayao, Honda without Akimo, Fuerte without Tetsu and TKD. The list is pretty much endless.

This could also includes Tekken players. But yet, no T6 release here. There are, what, 2 BR machines in the entire Southeast US. Top players here have to drive or even fly 3 hours just to play. Even with the handful of arcades that imported, there are MANY top players here not playing a game that they are the best at because they do not have access to it. And there wasn’t an international uproar about that.

My point is that the goal is noble (seriously, give the regions with non-dead arcades a cab), but the sentiment I’m reading is just odd. There’s all this talk about defending and preserving the global community and global talent. But that sentiment has not, has never been, and will never be offered to us.

At the end of the day, it is a business decision, no doubt. If the books at Capcom show that it is not financially beneficial, it isn’t going to happen.

That said, if it’s a close call, and there is some question right now as to whether to do it or not, a little community action could cause the balance to tip in favor of a release.

People are saying we can do fine on console only, but let’s look at the players here. How many guys are placing well who don’t play regularly in an arcade or didn’t used to at some point? Maybe Dr. Chaos and a few others, but even then, almost all of our top players are established arcade names like Wong, Valle, Ma, Marn, Combo, Sanford, etc. Same goes for Europe. The only top player I can think of over there who doesn’t play in arcades is Alioune. Look at new names like Ironfist. Would he have come up without the California arcade scene? I doubt it. Without a healthy arcade scene, you better get used to seeing nothing but the same names for a while.

Arturo’s in Japan right now, and we all know he’s gonna come back a lot stronger. Why? Not just because of drive and dedication but because he had access to the right comp’. I mean, Alex, where would you be now without arcade SF?

Look at Amerikan in Japan. How did he get so good? By playing guys like Mago and Shiro everyday, not by sitting at home and fighting scrubs with 3 bars online.

Well, here’s a bit a of logic for you, sir:

First of all…how old are you? You seem a bit irrational. This is a videogame, meant to be enjoyed by the masses regardless of who is or is not playing it. If you decide not to play the game based on the belief that your main competitor will not play it, then don’t waste your time here. What good is it posting on a thread that will no doubt be sickered at by the Capcom Marketing department? Do you think that they are willing to invest in the epensive process of having Taito manufacture the necessary harware to house their game for arcade use?

Logic would tell you that satisfying the needs of 400 tournament bound players far and away undermines the fact that they are producing this game for a broad audience. The broad audience translates to console players which in turn translates to cash for Capcom. Ono definitely cares about the tournament scene, but I’m afraid Capcom does not. You, along with the Japanese community that plays the game need to open your minds to the changing enviroment. The way I see it, if you want the scene to continue, you will take the steps necessary to do so.

Instead of trying to belittle my opinions, I think your energy would best be served as a means to perpetuate the scene once the new game arrives.

If you clearly do not believe that the scene can be saved without an Arcade version, then my condolences. I’m sorry for your loss. Take it easy, man. This is just a videogame. There will come a time in your life when you will look back upon all this and laugh…I was once just like you. I laugh about it all the time, thinking about how silly my ideals were.

I never said Fuck Japan. I like Japan and it’s people. I want to one day visit the country with my wife and son. I’m no redneck either. But I’ll stick by what i say:

I honestly believe than non-Japanese players can be every bit as good as Japanese players. Don’t shoot yoursel’ves in the foot by thinking otherwise. If the Japanese players decide not to play, so be it. Either follow them to the next big game or continue to play and enjoy the various versions of SF4. There will be no changing Capcom’s decision to forego an Arcade release given the current market climate. Trust me on this.

2nd, posting in this thread is a means to debate opinions with other people in the thread. the purpose of a forum is to post and read threads.

also, you think capcom is going to snicker at this thread? capcom most likely isn’t even going to read this thread or know of it’s existence. but doesn’t mean we can’t try.

third, capcom doesn’t need taito to manufacture any new hardware at all. they only need the software to run on the existing taito x2’s that sf4 is already running on and that they have already sold to arcades.
all they do is put the software on an hdd which gets swapped into the taito in place of the old sf4 hdd.

fourth, logic and knowledge of video game economics would tell you that large player base leads to large sales… but the competitive scene for said video games is a driving force for the marketing and promotion of that video game.
this is especially true for games such as street fighter which have very little single player or story mode content. the sales of this type of title is directly related to the competitive aspect of it. as sad as it is, do you know how many copies of sf4 just 1 competitive player like daigo probably helped sell?
look at first person shooters as an example… the ones which have the best competitive environments generally are the ones that sell the best and have the most sequels.
i actually work in the video game industry, and judging by your comments, i don’t think you understand the financial side of this business as well as you think you do.
just look at my other posts, i’ve actually gone into the economic side of this debate quite a few times already.

True enough, but now even places that had decent arcade comp’ are being cut off. I’m just saying that it’s easy for people to say we can get by on console when they’ve had regular arcade comp’ for 3-10 years. Unless we see GGPO quality netcode, it’s gonna be even harder for new players to come up.

I’m not a Tekken player, but that is very fucked up. I’d have been petitioning Namco. I’m sure people probably did get in an uproar and sign petitions and the like. And while I know everyone is not like me, I’d have expected the other world regions to care as well. You say that didn’t happen they didn’t care.

Well, that doesn’t change my resolve one bit. I’ve been trying to open peoples eyes to think on a global level. Saying “well they don’t care about us why should we care about them?” That’s just not the right attitude and I’m not going to adopt it.

Yeah but I seriously doubt that it’s on the fence. Especially with their general attitude towards continuing the series (Linko posted from here) being that they don’t think it’s a smart idea, it’s almost a miracle that SSF4 is even releasing.
