by releasing to arcades, capcom may lose money in the short run but if they don’t release in the arcades and the scene for this game dies in japan or the hype around it dies overall, they stand to lose much more money in the long run and possibly lose an entire franchise.
at the end of the day i understand the decline of arcades and the economic need to move to consoles… but does this mean we should just say “fuck it, it’s a lost cause” and stop supporting arcades?
should we roll over and just let it die without trying?
Arcade release only HELPS AND IMPROVES the game, the community and the scene. If you only play console you may not care but there is no reason you should not support an arcade release of the game. If you are apathetic that’s fine, but there is no reason to be against having both a console and arcade version of the game.
It’s more along the lines of fuck Japan, let them adapt, progression 21st century etc. etc.
That is shameful. I think people are being selfish with this attitude and deep down it’s like they want, as you say, that handicap. Disgusting.
We need to look at the bigger picture here and extend our hearts and hands to the Japanese players here and support an arcade release. Instead everyone has this fuck um attitude or they are off on some rainbow about the light at the end of the tunnel aka progression and online play (no offense to Valle, but I can’t back that).
And before any more top players come in here and say this is a good thing, you guys need to realize something. Not everyone lives in the heart of the scene like ya’ll. And none of ya’lls are playing online. It’s easy to not care when you have great local comp. I’m blessed to have an awesome local scene. But lets face it. It’s 2009 and guess what? Netcode still sucks ass. GGPO is not good enough. You cannot bull doze the best part of the scene when the mall you are trying to build over top of it doesn’t have a foundation yet.
I’m not against arcades, I’m against people who acts like the SF series (or pretty much fighting games in general) is going to fucking die out if there isnt no arcades for the newer iteration in Japan or some shit. Its annoying with all these “woe is me” or “I’m boycotting a game for not releasing an arcade in another country” posts.
You are extremely obtuse if you think that this is going to destroy the [Japanese] tourney scene. It will simply be on console. Most of the good players shall adapt and continue to play.
If you don’t like it, then shove your monies at Capcom and the Japanese arcades so that they might sustain said dying scene.
I’m not saying we should. I am, however, afraid that it won’t help. I can totally see the ‘hype’ or what you want to call it simply transferring - and maybe Arcades will adopt and just put in Console-based cabinets, who knows. I really couldn’t care less whether my game runs on a damn arcade-boards or a widespread console. I mean, that would be a viable option, even if it does turn out that SSFIV doesn’t get an ordinary arcade-release.
So basically, what I’m saying is that I believe that eventually - and unfortunately - arcades will vanish in favor of consoles. Maybe we can prolong it a bit; but we won’t be able to stop it.
If I am proven wrong and arcades will still flourish here in 20 years - all the better! But right now I don’t believe they will.
how the fuck do you not understand that capcom is a japanese company and that a very large demographic of it’s fight game consumer base is in japan?
you think if the sf4 scene in japan dies that it won’t affect sf4 as a franchise? lol i’m done responding to you.
you’re enjoying yourself on your couch with your doritos while you play street fighter?
ok good for you, nobody is trying to take that away from you.
so leave the arcade talk to the people who actually like to go out and meet new people and actually see them in person.
no, i totally agree with your statement…but i was just looking at it from a wider perspective. eventually all arcades are probably going to die, outside of japan at least. i’m not here to hate on arcades…i wish i had one near me.
anyways, i am not going to turn this into an argument. like i said i hope ssf4 DOES get an arcade release. i don’t think it’s the end of the world if it doesn’t though.
How about arcades just suck it up and buy some consoles for variety at the very least? What’s the real appeal and need for arcade cabinets? It really seems like a waste of money to me.
Japanese people are, by tradition, more accustomed to sitting on the floor than Americans. Not saying there’s something wrong with that, but when it comes to having a stable “arcade” stick, players, REAL players, no matter the nationality, do what they must.
As of late, Capcom has been westernizing themselves. A person at Cap JP even said that Japanese gaming is dying at TGS.
And why do the scene have to die in Japan if they have no arcades? Hook up consoles at the arcades or some shit. Its not like Capcom not releasing SSF4 in Japan. Buy the fucking console version. If they like SF enough, they’ll buy the fucking console version. Simple and plain as that.
If this is the start of Japan’s arcade scene dieing then fuck it, they can adapt like the rest of us.
I mean you can still get together with good, hell even great players and not have to sit down in a cloud of smoke in Japan, you would think Japan would have jumped ship with technology at this point, you know?
The entire rest of the world is going to be playing SSFIV on console and we have to cater to one tiny little island?
I just want the arcade version mostly because the feel of the arcade is a lot better than the online experience.
Not to say I don’t like the online, But If you’ve been to an arcade you meet the person you’re playing rather then seeing or hearing a faceless person. Luckily though lobbies for SSFIV are pretty much there. I still would love to see SSFIV Arcade to come not only to JPN but America ( NorCal loves SFIV too, Not just SoCal ;-; )
No, the best players in America still live and play in places that have an arcade scene. Wait and see how much the netcode has improved in SSF4 before you can even say the scene can overcome the death of arcades.
