huh?
He’s saying that, like Street Fighter 3, SF4 will go through a couple more renditions before its awesome
Old games with many revisions last a long time.
SF4 is a relatively new game coming up on it’s first revision.
It will probably last a long time as well.
At least that’s what I took from it.
so is your place open today and tomorrow Jermoie?
i was thinking just now, no offense to anyone, but what’s the point of doing ranbats on pc? when evo is on ps3(or 360) even the slights difference in frames makes the a world of difference to players that take a game seriously.
even 3rd strike ps2 is faster than arcade. I can feel the difference between the two and it’s so different some of the top players in America won’t play console.
so i feel playing sf4 on anyother platform than arcade/console (as they run the same reliably) would hurt the scene instead of help the scene. and an easy way to test to see if your system is running faster/slower is have your FPS up and if it moves away from 60 ever during a match it’s not suitable.
Ugh…I’m not touching this one, but I agree to an extent.
i just have to put in my official 2 cents.
i dunno man i hear the idea of having everything uniform to evo, but in terms of “helping or hurting” being able to play on all platforms is nothing but a + imo. adaption is key so what platform its on (unless its some ghetto hacked shit) shouldent really matter. but at the same time i do feel that people concerned about their performance should have the option of what system or setup theyd prefer to play on, and that everyone should be welcome to bring their preferd system if need be(which is the case already i believe).
Edit: also im sure if there was some “miraculous” lag spike that really effected what happened that it could/would be addressed, and the match/round start over. but again this is a worst case scenario, and with testing prior to the match i believe there wont be any critical complications in the 2-5 minutes that matches occur.
Jeromie has a PS3, someone just bring a copy of the game, or bring another system and the game. PC is fine for casuals, but if you want to do some kind of serious thing console is the way to go. I’m kind of over the idea of ranbats anyway recently, round robin snuggie battles is where it’s at.
Kurt is pretty much on the ball here, I keep the frame timers up on my PC versions and if the frames drop during a match I will DQ it and start it over. I also do have ONE PS3 so I will probably hook it up to my CRT and create a play-station that has absolutely nothing that will mess with anyone, you can only cater to the player so far and I am doing all I can right now to keep it legit.
As far as the PC version goes - it runs at 60 fps solid and doesn’t flicker except for some occasional wierdness that’s honestly probably a product of my motherboard but for the ranbats I will be running SF4 off a fresh install OS on its own drive. I don’t want it to be a controlled environment where I am saying “no” to anything, I am open to anything anyone says if it’s an issue for you and I will do whatever I can to get things straight for your matches.
it’s not a preference thing, as much as it’s a Tournaments are held on console/arcade and console/arcade run equal minus those console characters.
if there is ANY inconsistancy it should not be tolerated. inculdes the drop of a single frame at any given moment could cost someone a combo, from what i’ve experienced on PC is it floats between 59~61 but even that is too much.
i will not enter a tournament on PC. the only thing PC version is good for is… costume edits which 90% are gross anyway.
again this is not meant to offend anyone so don’t you dare all start to get salty. i want a tournament more than anybody else but tournaments are uniform for a reason if PC was what they’d play at evo i wouldn’t play unless the PC matched specs in every fashion.
i know you all understand where i’m coming from if jerome wants to run ranbats/tournaments Good but have it ran uniformly to the systems being used across the country/world.
final words
tournaments/ranbats yes, PC no (especially if your running shit in the background or continue to have that particular PC connected to the internet.)
I will be opening the house tomorrow, so it will be on like neckbone, and man I am looking forward to it because it’s been too long between sessions.
i hear you man, but honestly i dont agree with most of that. adaption is where its at, and while we may be able to control OUR tournaments there is no telling what others like WA or Cali will do and regardless of what they do, we’d probly have no input. so when it really boils down to levels of competition the players with the most adaption skill will always have an edge. but again thats my opinion and i dont mean to sound like im pushing for evo to use PC but yeah i believe in no crutches and for me anything i need to rely on is a crutch.
Probably could have just said you want to play on the PS3 station :]
I didn’t want to go into this but I can’t resist. If you had frames enabled on the console version and the arcade version you would see that exact same thing happening with the frames being between 59-60 because nothing runs at EXACTLY 60 fps mathematically. Theres always going to be a small % of decimal action on the other side of the decimal and so the computer shows 59.89 fps and 60.32 or whatever.
Arguments on console/arcade versus PC are pointless as framerate goes because both the arcade machine and the consoles are PC hardware, they are ALL going to have the decimal discrepancy that is present in every game. Maybe the inputs feel different or the timing overall feels different but the statement about losing a combo over it is conjecture. If the machine stuttered or something then yes that is unplayable and not legit for competition because you could indeed lose a move over it, but the minor framerate changes (59.XX-60.XX) you will see are part of any game on any system. It’s been this way and will always be this way, because it’s math’s fault. My system will run the game at 110 FPS easily the entire time, it’s the frame limiter being on that keeps it to the range you see represented by the FPS counter. Frame limiting is simply “on by default” or not switchable on the console and arcade versions.
There are definately detectable differences between systems/versions but the framerate itself is not a point of contest as they are all doing the same thing when it comes down to it which is failing to maintain an exact 60.000000000 framerate. That is information you can take to the bank.
This is all just information, not an argument. Let’s keep it civil and see what comes out of it.
adaptation is key yes BUT to adapt to something that is not running correctly (as in as it’s supposed to) adapting to a player yes adapting to a system not running correctly is just gross.
but i will gladly play in a tournament on your pc the first one at least i will play viper and i will spam flame kicks until the FPS changes and call for a dq of the match and start over until you understand the problem even if we’re there for 24+hrs
edit:
@jerome i’ve been saying console or arcade only since the beginning.
calling it gross makes me think of “one man’s trash is another’s treasure”. but its true that if the “game is not running how its supposed to” there is a bit of a problem, and if it was proven to me that capcom made mistakes in porting it or w/e and that it does not run the way they intended it to then id have a new perspective.
but from where im standing ATM, ive been able to preform on all versions of the game. so thats all im really saying, is that SOME people can play through the differences. so to a player like me it does not matter, ill go to utah and play on the pc version with the visuals all the way down so every level is a black training mode level, and at the same time i appreciate that not everyone shares the same outlook on this game as me. so yeah i understand, im just posting out my opinion which is in some ways the opposite of yours. and like i said earlier i completely agree that the players should have the choice of what their playin on, no doubt.
If you can come prove something about the PC version then it is here patiently waiting for you to come show me wtf you’re talking about so we can say “wtf” together. I hold no malice for people who want to communicate intelligently, it would be welcome in fact.
I don’t recall ever saying that anyone would be forced to play on PC, in fact I have done my best to make sure I can recreate the EVO experience just the way you want, that’s exactly how I feel about it too. If you want to play on PS3 I got you. If you want a TE stick to play on I got you. If you want a CRT instead of LCD I GOT YOU.
I don’t want this to look like I am forcing anyone to do anything, in fact I have not said very much about the tournament policy at all. I will lay it out for you guys, if you want to play on any system with any controller on any screen I WILL DO THIS FOR YOU. YOU WILL NOT BE FORCED TO PLAY ON ANYTHING YOU DISAGREE WITH, NOR FORCED TO TAKE THE RESULTS OF A MATCH THAT WAS NOT LEGIT AS FAR AS HARDWARE GOES. THESE RANBATS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOPE AS FUCK AND WE CAN ONLY MAKE THEM THAT WAY TOGETHER.
There’s some policy for you guys, I hope it helps because I want to do nothing but make this a thing for the PLAYERS and not something that makes me “cool” because I host the shit. I don’t give a fuck about that, for real. Tell me what you want in the game seriously and I will take it seriously. Random grumbly comments after losing DO NOT COUNT. Intelligent discussion will get you everywhere with me, and I will give you the shirt off my back to make you happy in my place if you give me that respect.
Dr. B said it was wonky. Dr. B would never lie.
A perfect example of intelligent discussion, wonky is a highly technical term, but I think he said “wierd”
Then again, he didn’t have any problems wooping asses either. Hmmm.
-Edit My sarcasm is referring to the kind of discussion you usually hear while playing and how I wish we could really figure out what’s wrong; “this is wierd” or something similar, hell I was the first person saying it when I learned SF4 on my PC and then played at Versis on the consoles, it fucking rocked my world and I couldn’t get shit off until I warmed up for like 30 min and even then I was iffy. I wish we could quantify it somehow and talk about what it is directly but noone can really pinpoint it. All I know is things like this didn’t happen back in the cartridge days, lol. I am trying to roll with the punches. Maybe I will just get this other PS3 up and running and stop using PC altogether.
lol true story
