PDX Weekly Tourney / Casuals

Why don’t you be his friend

lmao dude jesus

forget about SF, you need to work on leveling your sarcasm game

OMG!! BBH lives!!! What is this? Haha how you been dude?

I will admit that the friends I have that play street fighter see a lot more of me than others.

Dude where have you been? You need to start coming to Jetays or Jeromys for casuals. We need that bison training before we go to seattle to face their bison army next month. If we lose we have all agreed to blame you.

i won’t blame you BBH because by now we should all know what to expect from a dictator. because sf4 is linear, and it’s been out long enough to be able to spot what they’re going to do. the only mind games in sf4 are

MG1: is it going to cross me up?
MG2: is he going to finish the combo or throw.
MG3: am i bored with this game or am i actually going to try.

^ “I don’t play this game” lmao

for reasons stated above.

Street Fighter is boring on paper when you pick 2 mind games and make a joke implying that there’s nothing more to the game than that.

it’s not a joke.

sadly

-_-

What about focus attacks? high/low mixups? corner pressure? delicate spacing with pokes and priority? risk/reward situations? baiting?

Just saying… a LOT of games sound very lame/boring when on paper. All First Person shooters boil down to aiming, if you want to take that route.

look man, we’ll just play next time, and we can talk about it then. im sick of typing out my dislikes.

TRuth spoken

What games do you guys prefer then? I’d rather get to know the games you play than argue about what everyone likes/dislikes.

Interesting discussion. I hear a lot of people (read: more than 5) say they don’t play this game then I see them playing it avidly and even making comments of a far-less-than-casual nature on the game itself.

On complaining about the game being boiled down to mind games…

The simplicity of the game is a brilliant way to let the power of the players really come through. It’s up to you as a human being to be a creative player and find the space within those limitations to get what you want done, not use every crutch in the game you can to win. One day you will meet an opponent that knows how to remove those crutches from you and you will fall down go boom. Those mind games that are left are what makes the high level game what it is, and BBH is too smart for your asses. The only way you are going to take him down at this point is to learn his style and mindgames and beat them with your own. Good luck with that.

This is what I mean when I say a player is creative or not, either they look for opportunities and find them or create them, or they simply follow the rules as they understand them and when they hit a “wall” (i.e. they lose a lot) they get trapped and bounce around like a robot toy because they can’t find a way to think differently. It all derives back to an internal desire to get something done for yourself, which in this case is winning a match and enjoying some competition.

Some people have the inner intention so strongly they don’t read anything and just pick up the game and do well naturally because they have a very strong intention to absorb information and use it while they play. Some people have a strong desire but use scientific means to acquire a higher knowledge of the game than is available by observation. The fact is that no matter what the situation is you are going to face opponents of infinite variety and the place to find your strength is inside, not in the game you’re playing. Noone’s approach is right but your approach, and you should enjoy the game you play so that the necessity to play can help drive some invention in your game. Yes, necessity (you wanting to play the game) is the mother of invention (you being good at the game, hence enjoying it and not bitching about it).

Also, the simplicity factor in most games is what makes them so fun. By keeping it down to basic elements you leave far more room for the players to be creative and show what they are really capable of as a person, and the game stays out of the way and makes a nice platform for them to compete on. I guess Pong was boring because all you had was a ball and a moveable wall. I guess Basketball is boring because its just a ball and all you can do is pass or shoot it. Boom, plug in an opponent or a few opponents and watch the game spring to explosive life. Want a single player example? Space Invaders. Shits easy as hell until one simple thing happens. The game speeds up the more you kill. Without that one single element I am willing to bet the game would not have been nearly as popular, it adds a huge chunk of anticipation and a burst of excitement at the end.

It’s not the game or the structure that makes it really fun, it’s the enjoyment, sporting spirit, and skill of the people playing it. Also the thrill of having a legitimate live opponent can really make a game exceptional. Even if it’s a boring or simple title a good opponent can make it very fun.

Don’t forget that the whole purpose of a fighting game is to fight another human, the most incredible opponent on earth. Give a human several basic elements and watch how complex they can actually become in the right hands. It’s not the game’s job to take you higher, it’s the game’s job to give you a solid platform to take each other higher on.

If you’re gonna bitch about it but still play it, noone can help you out with that and no amount of discussion will make you happy until you actually like the game. Play something else you do like or you are wasting more than just your time because noone wants to hear a player say they don’t like the game they are playing, it’s awkward and kinda not very smart to diss the thing you are supposedly doing for enjoyment, it can even make you look like a liar or an idiot.

If you hate the game but play it because you think you benefit from it or that you’re gonna be a tourney champ and win lots of cash, that’s cool but you should still probably not diss the game. Noone wants to hear it, straight up. Games can improve you as a human but that doesn’t mean you should play ones you don’t like as training and then complain about it, even in that situation it seems kind of absurd since you are actually benefiting from it. I personally don’t really have any idea how to respond to that kind of thing other than this way.

Do what you enjoy doing and make yourself happy. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing but you persist in doing it anyway, save us the sob story.

I don’t really like the new Tekken

But I’ll play it more than anyone else.

C wut I did thur

lmao. ba-zing!

I totally agree with this. A lot of top players say that fighting games are tools, where you can express your playstyle, rather than games with rules.

The only exception I’d like to point out is when a game is broken at high-level gameplay.

I think simplicity has its moments, but there’s also something to be said for a complexity that allows you to play a character how you want to play them. A proper amount of complexity will also help hide tier lists by giving you a more in-depth and perhaps more unknown rock-paper-scissors game. I think this kind of idea is seen obviously in Guilty Gear, but I believe you can also see it in games like Virtua Fighter, albeit a little more under the surface in that game.

I find Street Fighter 4 to be more and more boring as I play other games. I highly recommend playing something other than Street Fighter to give yourself a new perspective on Street Fighter and fighting games in general.
G_Effect! D:<

This is a fun discussion though.

Gawd damnit, you only have a ps3
