Pacific Rim Thread (2013)

Hideo Kojima tweeting that this movie is his dream come true is enough to make me have to watch it.

And he’s not the only japanese game developer or artist or whatever singing this movie’s praises.

Welcome to the Shatterdome!!!

I saw this movie last night and it has been a while since a movie left me speechless. The first fight was just…my god it made me so happy. Definitely gonna catch an imax showing.

Off to see this tonight, can’t wait.

After a summer of disappointing movies (MoS, IM3), I am hoping this movie will be the summer blockbuster I’ve been waiting for to blow me away.

Trying to avoid spoilers (I’ve heard some), but the reviews I’ve managed to read have been all full of hype, so I got my fingers crossed!

Just got back. It’s good it’s actually really good! Some of the best 3D I’ve seen. It’s way better than Man of Steel, no shakey cam, fights are clear not close up (Michael Bay take notes on how to tell a story and how to shoot fights), you can tell there is a romantic interest between the leads but it’s not forced, they don’t fall in love after 5 minutes after meeting, and they won’t be shagging like rabbits by the end of the movie. I think I enjoyed it more than Star Trek, but that could be because I had very low expectations going into this movie.

I don’t understand the hate this movie is getting, I understood Man of Steel’s but the criticism this movie is getting doesn’t make much sense. The destruction easily eclipses Man of Steel but it’s established many times they care about Human life, and one can assume after the amount of times cities have been attacked they have a robust emergency protocols (there is one scene where the HK police escort everyone down underground). I also really enjoyed the mad scientist duo they were a lot of fun, not cheesy at all, there were some genuine laugh out loud moments.

Was it me or did anyone get some Halo vibes. See spoiler below, Australia Jager Mark V/Master Chief Mark VI pics
Also note that Team Aus wore same shade of MC’s green, it’s also probably just coincidence but MC is meant to reddish hair with a light sprinkle of freckles, anyone that has watched Eastenders on the BBC knows that’s a similar description of Rob Kazinsky (the Australian character).

OMG the lead’s acting hahaha so bad at the beginning, there are scenes where he actually brings down other actors. They need to redub that stuff for the bluray lol

Alot of people walked out of the cinema when the credits started rolling. Do not make the same mistake

I’ve decided I want Del Toro to direct Halo and Metal Gear Solid. I hate 12a movies though, they really lack omf during scenes where you know could be done better with a 15 rating.

Favourite part

[details=Spoiler]When they pull out the sword, very similar to Ivy’s sword in Soul Calibur.
When the monster reveals it can fly :open_mouth:

Did I miss something

Spoiler

Hellboy said they shouldn’t do the mind meld because they know everything we know, but no reason was given to why the alt universe wanted the scientist so bad. Then after the baby chase it’s all forgotten about. LOL at that bro shake fail.

8/10 it was worth the premium ticket, bought a poster, would watch again.

If you are a fan of giant robots (not mecha or realistic robots, I’m talking Super Sentai, Gigantor and Giant Robo style giant robots) or giant monsters like Godzilla, you should enjoy this movie… unless you have some elitist and/or nostalgia stick up your ass.

It isn’t the best in terms of story or characters but neither is it terrible in those respects and the fights were awesome.

Spoiler

The sword bit was probably the best part of the movie action wise. Although I did enjoy the bit with the baby Kaiju, Ron Pearlmann and the dude from its Always Sunny…

Edit:

Honestly, I’d be shocked if within 5 years, we don’t see a Japanese movie dealing with giant monsters akin to Pacific Rim. I know most if all of the Japanese studios don’t invest as heavy or have access to some of the special effects that Hollywood does but it is almost like a direct challenge at this point that this is probably the most legit giant monster movie in years. Don’t know if it will be enough to have them try a CG Godzilla again but I’m sure whoever is working on a live action adaptation of Evagelion probably was taking notes and bought or stole a bootleg for later study.

The only problems I had in the film were

Spoiler

The main lead is completely forgettable. I’ve never watched Sons of Anarchy so I don’t know if Charlie Hunnam is a good actor but he didn’t really sell me on this role. I never felt particularly invested in him and his best lines were the narration in the beginning (which does get me pretty hype)

[details=Spoiler]The Russian and Chinese Jaegers got disposed of way too fast. Like they do a battle stances and throw a few punches/razors but there’s no weight to their destruction except the “oh shit there’s only two others left” reaction.

Plus, the Chinese one needed Altron/Nataku Dragon Fangs :p[/details]

Spoiler

I watched the trailers way too much and Idris Elba’s speech sounded cheesey now instead of ridiculously badass. They should’ve kept the shortened version from the original trailer.

7/10 seems like a fair score, definitely the best action movie I’ve seen this summer, trumping Iron Man 3 and Man Of Steel easily (I still enjoyed both of these). My audience was cheering like mad whenever a Kaiju was taken out, so patriotic haha.

WOOOOOOO CHIIIIIILD I TELL YOU WHAT
That movie was the fuckin shit man. Only problem I had was that there needed to be like one or two more fights to break up the talking but its all good. MAN that aussie Jaeger was TIGHT. It was all fast and shit. And that fight with Gipsie 2. Daaaaamn yo. Rocket punches and breast fires. That’s how you make a mecha movie. I’m lookin at you, Bay.
Mako was sexy too.

He could totally do Metal Gear Solid.

Kermode Reviews

TLDW: He likes it

Absolutely, I wasn’t even thinking about the mechs. I think Del Torro just has a great eye for visuals. For example all the sets in this movie are black and brown but he still manages to breathe life into it, even the dark scenes seem vibrant, everything seemed to be framed perfectly.

Another thing I liked - Mechs going to battle should leave in awe but he doesn’t make it feel OTT all, Del Torro handled the action very well, the final battle is probably just as long the Man of Steel’s but it never got boring and the soundtrack isn’t overpowering either.

Sounds very Ironman

BBC Simon Mayo (the other guy that does the reviews with Kermode) Interviews Del Torro

Oh yeah, for those of you that haven’t seen the movie yet, I hear there is a after credits scene (I bounced after I saw the film once the credits started didn’t want to gamble on if there was one or not when I saw it)… I feel like I should fucking hate Marvel for making that shit popular, I hate just staring at credits.

I didn’t mention it in my other post but my only gripe with this movie:

Spoiler

The other two mechs didn’t get enough of a showing, they obviously had care put into them, a lot more than what was shown before they got wrecked. The Chinese mech fought with clear martial arts inspiration, and the Russian mech(my favorite of the mechs in the movie) fought like a brawling wrestler. They gave the teams and mechs personality, and you could see it if you paid attention during the fight, but it was more of a taste than anything else, and it left me hungry for more fights involving them.

All they would have needed was an introductory flashback/newflash clip like the Striker-Eureka got. Speaking of which, that fight may have been one of the shortest in the movie but it looked so fucking smooth and realistic compared to the others, which were amazing in their own right.

Really, it feels like they probably did have those, or they planned on them but they didn’t have time for it and we got what we got.

Not spoilers below, just big images.

My favorite Mech

Spoiler

Giant nuclear Russian robot that elbow drops Kaiju. It’s also very Big-O inspired, in it’s movements and attacks, and even looks I guess.

My favorite Kaiju

Spoiler

Knife-head, as in a fucking knife coming out of its skull that can stab and cut things(which it totally does). Simple, but awesome.

This guy was pretty awesome too, because it was actually terrifying and fearsome looking in it’s scene, unlike the other Kajiu that were just awesome and cool looking.

What were you guys’s favorites?

your movie logic lately has been lacking.

just got back from this. I’m a little torn. While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, a few things kinda were negatives. However, the IMAX theatre I went to broke the 3d so we got to see the regular non 3D version for free. Still left a bad taste in my mouth and may have contributed to this.

Spoiler

Main actor is fucking awful.

they never really explained how he knew Mako or whatever the Mirror’s Edge chick’s name was, was compatible with him.

Other mechs got merced way too easily. They should have had at least one fight with them showing off to showcase the various mechs, then let em get offed. This wasn’t a huge issue with me, and more of a wish

Ron Perlman discusses why you don’t mind meld. They never really discussed why monsters weren’t coming for him, or what happened when Ron did it.

The fights were cool to watch, but very little super amazing happened. It was like watching two boxers slowly fight in mocap suits. The sword bit was cool, and some of the extra weaponry was cool, but I was expecting more of that stuff. That rocket punch seemed pretty fucking useless too.

I agree that Japanese studio’s (aka Toho) need to try to one up this movie.

There is another Godzilla movie that comes out next summer, by the way. Filming right now in Canada, directed by the dude who made Monsters or whatever that giant monster movie was awhile ago.

Spoiler

lol I did this cuz I had to piss, then just as I was leaving, the Ron Perlman scene came up. Was there another scene later on, or was that it?

Fuck I want them shoes Ron had on.

yeah, cuz this movie was soooooo like Pan’s Labyrinth…

Not being a dick here, but Bogart’s point was pretty clear on what he meant. Not even sure how this is an argument.

Kojima should direct a MGS movie. End of story. I mean he pretty much already does, and his style is imprinted on the brand, not to mention they are damn near movies as is.

Spoiler

I always figured that the reason that the last batch didn’t attack and simply waited at the portal was them changing their strategy to defend the portal and, possibly lure them there so that they could be caught off guard by the class 5.

@SoVi3t

Those shoes were awesome.

Pearlman looked more like a pimp than anything else.

Also,

[details=Spoiler]We don’t know if they were or weren’t coming for him, or already had came for him before and given up.

There were clearly attacks is on honk kong before, Kaiju skeletons were made into building or built around. He also has a “Kaiju proof” shelter, he figured out how to escape them somehow. He knew that the Kaiju would go after Charlie as soon as he noticed his eye, so it’s safe to assume he’s been through it before.[/details]

Also, I agree that the lead actor sucked, but it wasn’t bad enough to seriously bother me.

Just saw it really good movie. Some parts and Rally’s voice were silly but I would most likely watch it again.
