Pacific Rim Thread (2013)

3d vip was worth the price of admission.

RLM did a good dissection of what Adam Sandler has been doing the past few years in this review.

Sucks that Grown Ups 2 is gonna make more money than Pacific Rim. =(

Americas taste cancer rises again smh.

Well the good news is that the overseas market is eating this movie up. Already grossed $60 million this weekend and other markets haven’t gotten it yet. So it could make its money back by next week.

Just wait (if it hasn’t already) till it hits Japan.

It didn’t really bomb. At least not yet. It only made 6 million less then that CGI cartoon.

Still in utter disbelief that people think so highly of this movie. I understand the theory that intentionally having shitty writing as an homage to the monster movie predecessors is a “good approach,” but just because a movie is similar to its influences doesn’t mean it’s a good movie. Besides the visuals, this movie was absolutely horrendous. But I guess there’s an audience for everything and nostalgia plays a factor in the appeal.

Shit movie from a shit director with shit actors. Good special effects but…that’s it. Srk is an odd bunch…they shat on the last two transformer movies…but, endorse this? Lololol. I knew I shoulda watched man of Steel again

Someone told me this flick is "Neon Genesis Evangelion in live action"
Is that accurate?

Lots of reviewers seem to think so. Wouldn’t know personally though.

Being a huge anime mecha fan, I thought this film was fantastic and definitely caters to that crowd. That being said, I watched it for what it was: a straight up mecha flick. It’s not gonna have the best writing or acting and I kinda expected it to have over the top action, and a bunch of cheesy one liners, which it did lol. It’s like they took bits and pieces of every mecha anime out there and stuffed it into a two hour long film.

I watched this to see giant robots fight kaiju’s. I wasn’t looking for a Shakespearean masterpiece, so I’m satisfied with what I got. Don’t know what most of the detractors were expecting from this movie

no…but there are heavy ass nods to eva.

main character=non emo shinji
asian=rei duh
australian kid=asuka…especially when he and the main character get into a fight…hahah its hella obvious he’s asuka

but there are alot of just sentai/giant robot references but you can tell they pulled the more obvious stuff from eva. if you take away all the weird religious/symbolism of eva its basically a giant robot show and thats what this movie was to me. honestly i only saw 4 stronnng eva references everything else is pulled from just giant robo culture in my mind.

The movie was a appeal to traditional movie making…which is quite simply to make a movie that is enjoyable, entertaining and fun. Compared to man of steel which is a soulless, shallow and empty experience this movie was a "hell ya"because it’s the first film this summer to feel like it wasn’t created by studio producers or marketers.

Anyone else jump at that preview for the space station movie when all that shit was flying at them. Shit got me good lol. My girl was laughing at my big scary ass.

Edit: Maxx is super gay for eva. And holyshit at people thinking a movie about monsters vs robots was going to be masterpiece theater. Shit acting? You mean over the top acting and a kid friendly atmosphere being that it is a Pg-13 monster flick in 3d. You weren’t the target audience then, go back to jacking it to your crap harem anime moe shit fest or whatever it is you like because I really have no clue at this point.

It’s just really confusing because besides the last two Fast & Furious movies it seems that every other movie that’s created with the intent of being a dumbed down popcorn flick that’s strictly intended to entertain is completely ragged on and labeled as “shallow,” but those don’t typically have the “pedigree” that an homage to giant mech/monster movies would. Just seems a bit inconsistent. Also it’s hard to have fun and enjoy a movie when you’re constantly facepalming at cliches and terrible moments throughout the film. I wish I could readily think of another movie that’s been so harshly criticized beyond the Transformers series - maybe the Expendables, A-Team or the Titans movies (not that I’m saying these movies actually deserve praise).

Actually no… I got the perfect movie: Drive Angry. And it has the lead actor to make it painfully obvious that this movie was a joke.

Edit: And with angelpalm’s post, it all makes sense.

Sounds like Pacific Rim makes sense, so no it’s not accurate at all.

Chances are it takes a white hot dump on the mess that is Eva anyway.

Drive Angry is a solid film, I personally think they failed in not jumping head long into the supernatural elements until the end of the film but seriously I enjoyed it when I saw on cable the other day.

But how fuck can you defend the Titans films, shit was a stain on the legacy of classic special effects masterpiece and on par with the weaker episodes of Hercules: Legendary Journey and Xena: Warrior Princess.

But yeah, this movie is an accessible love letter to fans of Godzilla and old school giant robot stuff like Gigantor, Giant Robo and Mazinger Z. Since it is an original property, you don’t have to worry about knowing anything but the homages and shout outs are similar to what comic fans get from adaptations like the Marvel movies or the good Batman films. It isn’t on par with most Marvel movies in terms of quality but it is a good film and you can’t call yourself a sci-fi fan if you go to the movies and don’t give it a shot. I mean is a Brad Pitt helmmed World War Z really more appealing?

This deserves more then some second if not third place finish behind some Adam Sandler movie…i hope over seas sales spike it up!
