I <3 the stranger. MAKE THE SLOG AT LEAST! How about a “The Stranger Suggests”? They Suggested the pinball festival, didn’t they? Can you imagine a bunch of random emo kids trying to play?
OK, since nobody has posted a better avatar at this point, I’ll likely encode with the old avatar because I am lazy and bad with image editing. If anybody REALLY cares, post up a better image to use. shrug
I made a screen for the front of the vids. It is in 200 dpi so it should look good no matter what size they watch the vids at.
It has the new PNW logo, a chun-li pic that I have really wanted to use, and brief info. The new logo is a mix of the two logos that Axel has come up with. I think they go together well. I hope he doesn’t mind me taking liberties with his designs.
I sent it to you Zach, and I’ll probably send it to Axel if he wants to host it.
Edit- Sorry Grant, didn’t see your post until I had finished.
Okay, it’s official. I’m in. I’ve got the rest of the month off from work and I’m gonna be there. I’ve even folded one of the logos into my avatar just for the sake of hype. I’ll refrain from aping Dwayne Johnson with one of these, “FINALLY, THE STILTMAN HAS COME BACK TO SEATTLE!!!” Oh wait, I just did, never mind…
There needs to be a, “Fighting Game Club” at the University of Washington =O. If someone establishes one, then you get a lot of money to spend however you want (from UW)… they have a hookah club, tea club and some other interesting clubs =o~ oh btw, I think I’ve played you kuenai O_O and you know my friend brento O_O
Well, I think that’s what Brento actually did set up. He’s graduating (congrats), but I’m sure somebody can carry the torch. I’d be more than willing to be an officer, now that I’m an official student.
Things it would be potentially useful for, for an event like the PNW Majors:
Advertising/Printing. Those color copies for flyers can add up. Possibly even for printing a banner to be placed in Red Square.
Facilities. Unless they hold your feet to the fire about the event “not being of primary benefit to UW students.” So, uh, maybe. Maybe not.
Security, Tickets, Ticket staff. Do we have any of these? Possibly unnecessary. Might be necessary if we didn’t have Brent(o) as a CSS guy. Thanks again, man.
If there’s another source of funding for student organizations, you should definitely tell us about it.
If you know of any clubs with an office that might be okay with sharing space, or are small enough that it could be ‘taken over’ by a group of fighting game fans, then let us know.
I think another possible solution might be to recruit members… and if we can get some members that are living on campus, some of them might be able to open up their dorm rooms on a regular schedule, or set up some arrangement for using a residence hall’s common area. This probably isn’t a good solution for 1-hour breaks and lunch-time, but it could be a very convenient way for people to play after classes if they’re students, or just without making a long car trip if they live nearby. I’m sure there are a lot of people playing video games on campus. If we can get a few of them to just make those gatherings more public & more regular, I think it could be really cool.
The ASU funding wasn’t really an option for the tournament. They do try to enforce the “primary benefit to UW students” by making everyone who enters the room show UW ID, and I think their might be a ASU attendant showing up periodically to see how the event is running. While we could probably just ignore that, there is a chance that it might be a problem, so I would just say screw it.
The biggest problem would be that if the school paid for the event cost, they would take just as much from the event profits to repay themselves. This means they would take ahuge amount money from the prize pots, which would mean less insentive for the winners of the tournaments. We also have to follow more rules since we are officialy representing the ASU.
It is basically more hassle and bureacracy, and we end up paying the same amount.
As far as security and tickets, their won’t be any tickets. People who sign up for a tournament will have their names placed into the brackets and that is how we will know who is playing and who isn’t. People are welcome to come in and just watch.
I still want to have a meeting with the tournament runners, and I think I am just going to schedule one and really push for them to show up. We will come up with rules, go over how to run brackets at a large tournament, and figure out security.
My idea for security will be to basically put each person helping to run a tournament (maybe 2 or 3 people) watching 2 or 3 stations that they are responsible for. There will only be 1 entrance and exit for the whole room, and outside of it will be the registration table where someone should usually be most of the time. All equipment will be marked with the name of its origional owner also, and donating your equipment means that it stays for the duration of the tournament. No taking your stuff in the middle. That creates a lot of problems for tournament runners and issues with peoples stuff getting lifted.
We get free printing since we are a club. The flyers that we have printed off so far are free. We can print about 400 more.
The HUB is being remodeled next year, and every club is being given a “basket” to hold their stuff. Clubs with rooms are having them taken away. This is not going over well with a lot of clubs.
I like all your ideas about the club though. I mostly just started the fighting game club because it saved us about 600 dollars on the room cost, and got us free printing. If you really wanted to work next year to make it a legitmate organization that would be very cool.
Ah, well, I thought that was pretty much the score with funding. Sure enough, you’ve looked into it all.
That stuff about the remodel, and baskets and stuff is new to me, though. That’s certainly a change. They should update their stupid web page, jerks. I guess that might put the club on the same footing as other clubs, but honestly if we can’t get at least a TV set up on a table somewhere, then none of that is going to help us at all.
I do like the idea of organizing casuals and tournaments around campus, in dorms and such. I think that has real potential.
Well, I’d be happy to make one that’s a little less like a sandblaster on your eyeballs, if there’s a desire for it. Although - are you talking about mine or Brento’s?
I know it’s busy as fuck - it’s like an angry fruit salad or something. It’s like I got kool-aid all over my vintage curtains. The purple was my attempt at a nod towards the UW. Probably overdid it. I tried to keep the blocky black and white text - for visual unity with the AVs, and also for easy legibility at 320 x 240, which is what I figure some of the video might end up as. Especially if it ends up on youtsube or something. But I’ll try giving it a friendlier, “blue-sky-in-games” kinda background.
And Brent! No ducking! Put me down for ST and Marvel!
