One Piece Thread: Gear 3rd!

I have a thing for chicks with mood swings for better or usually worst so more Ulti is a bonus for my senses.

Wow I’m definitely worried for Luffy!

Summary

The fact that Luffy had to resort to his trump card Gear 4th to take on Ulti (granted Page One was also tagging in) doesn’t bode well when it comes to Luffy to facing the upper echelon of Kaido’s forces, let alone Kaido himself.

On top of that Kaido’s son Yamato managed to one shot Ulti licketty split, showing that base level Luffy can’t really cut the mustard at this level.

It’s also interesting to see that even the Pleasures are made up of pirates who once sought to become Pirate King. Kaido’s entire philosophy as a pirate is clearly to destroy the weak and break in the strong to add to his fold. I’m sure this ties into his backstory somehow and explains why he’s virtually indestructible… I’m getting some Doomsday vibes…

As far as CQC-type combat goes, this arc has the potential to match Enies Lobby. If these higher level Zoans have the ability to access their Awakening without losing their senses this will be insanely challenging for the Monster Trio. We saw how insane the strength and amplified regenerative abilities of Impel Down Awakened Zoan guards were, just imagine how strong fully awakened Zoans with high level fighting skills and haki could be?!

I’m mostly worried about Sanji, for obvious reasons.

Zoro’s faced up with mostly melee combatants, them being fake zoans and all. It leans in to Zoro’s skill set, and even if he can’t win he can probably hold out for a long time.

Luffy’s probably fine for a while, looks like the rebellion just landed another top tier ally (which they desperately need). I trust Luffy’s instincts on characters generally. And I only think he was going to gear 4 because he was pinned and wanted to end the fight quickly, it wasn’t truly a case where he needed gear 4 just to compete.

I guess Kaidos son might train luffy or expose a possible kaido weakness…

Obligatory next crew member question mark

Kaido is a team effort battle. It will take some interference to hurt him. Big Mom’s Crew is that wild card. They already don’t trust the alliance. This for them is a means to elevate their crew over the Beast Pirates

I’m gettin the same vibe. Luffy might deal the final blow, but it’s gonna take a team to beat Kaidou, kinda like the Doflaminngo fight but on a bigger scale. Kidd is DEFINITELY involved with that final fight based on what Kaidou did to him

Yeah I figured that was the case from the jump, Oda has been hyping Kaido and Big Mom as basically end game level threats and they for what little we have seen have lived up to it most of the time. But for Wano to have a good ending they both have to be taken down. Which may mean they weaken each other and the team up of the worst generation knocks them off the board.

I still wonder how the Marines fit into this because I can’t see them having someone that deep in the organization of Kaido and not wind up playing another role in this besides freeing Law.

well to answer that, you have to ask is X-Drake alone? The guy is strong but I seriously doubt he’s working alone undercover. Guy is either gathering intel or staging some kind of assassination? Who knows?

We need some jewellery bonney

I wonder if Blackbeard Pirates will appear and capitalize on their defeat, by killing them while they’re weakened from Battling Luffy and friends, and stealing their DF powers.

Bruh…

You certainly have a point about Luffy wanting go Gear 4 to end the fight quickly, since he’s on a mission… but the fact that even when it came to trading haki-laden blows Luffy was acknowledging Ulti’s strength and felt noticeable pain before getting pinned down means that a solo fight would’ve still likely resulted in him using Gear 4th at some point in my opinion. I don’t believe Ulti was truly showing her full strength in the brief confrontation.

And yeah Luffy’s Haki has always been attuned to people’s emotions, which is why he freed Jinbei back in Impel Down after looking at him, and why Nami says Luffy can always ID the main bad guy behind everything to fight.

@Reiraku Even if I find this theory way off course I like the thought process at least. I personally think Kaido was just going to Marineford to raise hell since he desperately wants a world-ending battle. Also this would totally negate the emotional impact of Roger and Garp’s relationship as well as Roger meeting his love Portgas D. Rouge and the sacrifices that were made like her remaining pregnant with Ace for 2 years out of sheer willpower. (IIRC — she chose to name him Ace per Gol’s suggestion) It just doesn’t seem like Oda’s style to further meddle with such a finished plot thread.

Also, Ace formed the Spade pirates completely independently of any crew before joining Whitebeard, so I see that Oda’s way giving him his own branding.

What I’m more interested in now are these horned “humans” that have popped up in the series from time to time that we’ve just kind of accepted as a design choice but could be their own hidden race entirely. Ulti, Kaido, Black Maria, Oars/ Oars Jr., Hannyabal and possibly Who’s Who display this rare physical trait.

Here’s what’s been catalogued so far — Humans, Skypeians/ Birkans/ Shandians, Three-Eyed, Giants, Merfolk, Fishmen, Snakenecks, Longarms, Longlegs, Dwarves and Minks

There’s also whatever the hell King is supposed to be, but yeah…

For some of these I think the horns are just a cosmetic effect of their zoan DF.

I wouldn’t put it past Kaido to drunkenly demand his folk wear fake horns or develop real horns via fruit shenanigans.

lol It’s wildly inconsistent then. Ulti has the Pachycephalosaurus fruit and while these dinosaurs have horns, it isn’t like the ones that she has in base form. They’re clearly real since Luffy grabbed them to toss her. Also, Black Maria’s horns are clearly protruding from her forehead. I think it would be a cool way of showing a Zoan’s users Awakening though but I doubt that either since Queen should have it too.

It also wouldn’t explain other characters like Hannyabal having horns. I just realized I forgot about Caesar Clown and possibly Avalo Pizarro too…

My hunch is that it’s less of a rule, and more of how Oda wants to characterize them during the design stage.
