(OLD) Ken General Discussion Thread (Combos, Techniques, etc.)

Cheers for the tips, I’ll give them a spin.

Ok…We’ll have some matches soon. Hopefully we gotta a good connect.

@Tigerboi,** I’m not exactly sure what “plinking” is but I’m assuming it’s on a stick. I **use pad, and that C.HP seems almost impossible to get out in matches.

I’ll try it though;)

plinking is mainly a stick trick. it’s not really practical on a pad but… i’ll explain it here anyways and let you decide if you can pull it off.

so this game has attack priority not in the sense of like a hidden value attached to your moves to decide what move beats what. but instead on your inputs, ie. if you hit all 6 attack buttons at the same time only RH comes out. that’s because the attacks work like this kicks > punches, heavy > medium > light.

ok so then we use this fact to our advantage, we know that if we hit mp and lp at the same time a lp comes out, now the trick is that in plinking your hitting the button you want to come out 1 frame sooner than a attack with lower priority. what happens is that your first input would be mp and your second would be mp and lp, and this happens for 2 frames. so basically instead of only having 1 frame of mp input you get 2 frames because the second frame with lp and mp just gets read as mp, but the lp makes it so your mp is on 2 frames.

if that doesn’t make sense let me know and i’ll try to clarify further.

:mp::hp:
equals 2 hp commands, which gives you a better chance of hitting the link.

So you want to combo j.fp>c.lp>c.fp>tatsu, since the c.lp to c.fp link is kinda strict you should plink it, so your input would sorta look like

Hey guys, I heard that you can jump-in LK Akuma’s wake up Teleport. Is it true?

no but you can jump in hk option select ex tatsu to punish them.

eh,u cant safe jump akuma so if ur fighting a good akuma and u try the safe jump option select trik u will get punishd

Do a few empty jumps to see what they’ll do? If they reversal it’ll be a nice bait and they’ll be more reluctant to reversal afterwards and may just teleport out to be safe. That’ll open up your options but you’ll have to be careful if they get 2 EX bars.

Has anyone done cr.lk to tatsu? I’ve been able to do it in training mode only off the first cr.LK or cr.LP but in matches I’ve done it by accident off the 2nd cr.lp/lk. I know in training mode it was non-CH and in the matches it was vs the AI. I’m pretty sure they weren’t counter-hits either.

Any benefit to this? For if you don’t have any EX so you want to skip the cr.mk to stay closer?

So… does dragonboy still use Ken? Is he active with him?

I’m just wondering that since I’ve seen nothing of him as of lately.

In order to do an ex-tatsu on the 2nd c.lk you’d have to link the c.lks which is a 1 frame link. You can’t cancel twice during a combo, and c.lk>c.lk is considered a cancel. But yeah, you can combo an ex-tatsu off of a cancelled c.lk though. The only time I really do is vs. teleporting chars. On knockdown I’ll jump over them and fake a crossup then do c.lk>ex-tatsu. Its a lazy man’s option select. It’ll hit and combo, catch their teleport, or get blocked and you waste a meter. Sometimes you’ll fly the opposite direction of their teleport, too. Its generally a waste of a meter but it works sometimes.

I need some help understanding something real quick is the aa fp.srk > fadc > full ultra only in the case of of a counter hit?

No, aa fp.srk > fadc > full ultra works on both normal and counter hits

Nice, sounds good. Yea surprisingly there a lot of Kens I think are on the same Lvl as the masters, but just won’t come out the closet ( : O )

Idk if my Ken game is improving…Eh…I got kara’s down I guess (Doing it on Controller though) and links, etc, etc. Its just not hard beating everyone online so im not improving cause there easy

I just have no motivation/determination to actually learn something new. No competition, no one is holland plays the game/No arcades/No tournaments. Online is getting boring as hell. So idk if im making progress or not.

GOod shi though guys, sounds good o= GOtta learn that Option select shizzle

Well … why don’t you go to Evo '10?

lol o= Any of you guys going to Evo reppin Ken? Its on the other side of the world for me, plus I don’t have money so Ill just watch it from my pc lol. Plus Ill just get killed in the training rounds | :

Ryu user here looking to get into ken. Ok, I play Ryu. Why? I like shotos, I’m familiar with shotos, and my biggest strength lies in fundamentals (ok ok, and aa srk ultra is nice…). However, I want to learn Ken because mixups and shenanigans are fun as hell (and I scrubbed it up with him in HDR, god I miss the kneebash loop :stuck_out_tongue: ), and the Ryu hate wears on a person after a while. I have the basics down, but 4 things.

  1. What are the biggest things I should adjust and work on going from Ryu to Ken (also, how important are his option selects compared to the rest of the cast).

  2. What is the easiest way to start into tatsu mixups (common set-ups, hit confirms, etc.)

  3. what’s ken’s best hit-confirmable and practical big-damage combo w/out super or ultra.

  4. Any other specific tips and tricks I should look into?

about my ken: I can kara throw fairly consistently, I can hit confirm into shoryu in my sleep, and I really want to convince myself to buy his alt costume but I can’t part with the cash.

You cant stand Ryu hate and you switch to Ken? lol wat

  1. Im not too sure on Kens option selects but from what I hear theyre pretty specific i.e. not as useful

  2. You can get some of Kens tatsu combos on the first page of this thread. I have a few from watching some Edma fights aswell.

c.lk c.lp s.lp c.mk lk+tatsu
j.mk c.lk c.lk s.lp c.mk ex tatsu
c.lp c.lp s.lp c.mk ex tatsu
They pretty much take the basic combos and branch of them slightly

3.His BnB is also on the first page.

  1. kara air ex tatsu, kara focus, fp+srk > fadc> full ultra. All of that is also on the first page.

o hell no,ken is sacred, not tryna b a hater or anything but once u start losing cuz u have to wurk hard n most matchups ull switch bak to ryu anyway, honestly theres no reason to switch if ur main is top teir, jus my 2 cents

lol @ sacred. Kens all about maintaining the life lead, if you lose that then things start to get rough

lol mostly its the other way around. And if you’re looking at Combo’s Etc, TBH Ryu has more. He can link Twice as much then Ken can (Jab to sweep, Medium punches etc etc) (which Is sad, cause I want Ken to be the comboo master)

He doesn’t got his kneebash loop anymore though etc, but he will probably get something new.

Uh 1… I have no idea, don’t hadoken as much? Lmao. His recovery is noticeably worse then Ryu’s. And thats part of Ryu’s game sometime. Plus ken has a way harder time getting in/Zoning, because of his hadoken. So you’re trying to stay in close range, his range. And start learning What Ken can link compared to Ryu, cause Ryu can do more. [You got Kara-Focus for that though, and Kara-hadouken]

  1. What Nu skool said

  2. Yea basically on the front page. His most damaging combo’s, but you probably won’t land em to much, is his jumping Roundhouse > St. Roundhouse > Roundhouse Tatsu. That does about 450DMG or something, as much as some peoples ultra.

His strongest punish is, St. Roundhouse > RT/Roundhouse Tatsu. Very high damage. A lot use Crouching Fierce > To Ex shoryuken, or tatsu as well.
From very far away when someone wiffs a shoryuken, A Crouch Medium kick > Ex tatsu might help a lot.

  1. Kara-Focusing, Kara-Hadoukening, Kara-Throw for sure. Basically everything Kara wise, he got the furthest range on it. You’ll need it for zoning as well. And Idk play around with his Ex-tatsu, its fun, its very fast, and it can catch people off guard a lot. Well aimed it sometimes hits above, below (Overhead?) Idk I notice them blocking and it still hits sometimes. [from air]

But yea, Overall wise Ken is worse then Ryu, maybe far worse, so you’ll really have to work harder to win with him. Although hes the only char I like, hes awesome =o
