Old Genei Jin for the Win!: Yun Moveset, Strategies, and Combos

Actually what you saw was LK upkicks.
LK upkicks always whiffs crouching opponent.
Makoto just stood up for the 2nd hit is all.

TBH I forgot if it was reversal, but it was full hit.
I need to experiment more.

Alright w/e, screw all you non charge char players who have the luxury of just doing normal inputs. With DJ you have to have back charge, then do the normal motion and end it in the opposite direction to auto correct the ultra. In this instance I guess you just do the inputs in the opposite direction, but if it’s reversal timing then it’s pretty much auto correct, not that it means anything really.

It’s just a regular punish then.

^ iirc he wasnt even talking ABOUT the auto correct. only person really tlaking about it was you. he was talking about the punish of ex psycho with U2. you acted like he didnt know what auto correct was. talking about something punishing a move and autocorrect arent the same thing. sure sometimes to punish things you have to autocorrect but its not what he was trying to say… it was the principle of U2 possibly beating blocked psycho.

so i notice if you want to palm in the corner while activated you have to either hop kick or st.mp then palm. i did rising kick AA into st.mp hop kick into far fierce lunge punch. he was in the corner and after lunge punch i tried to palm and it missed / dropped my combo. maybe my timing was off i dunno.

how fast does he build meter with whiff palm?

between focusing normals and projectiles and whiffing palm i wonder if he can get genei jin at least once per round? gonna try ways to really optimize his meter building when i finally make my way to CTF

That would be gimmicky though, couldnt really apply that strategy to high level play

um whiffing palms doesnt get you a lot of meter. to get super each round probably is possible but you would probably use the meter for ex at times. but for instance if palms trade or hits while you build meter. 2 whiff palms and 1 traded / 1 clean palm pretty much gave me a bar of meter. when you go on the offense and stuff you gain a lot of meter, especially doing combos like cr.mp x 2 st.mp into lunge/shoulder/rising kick shit gets you a lot of meter. definitely worth holding GJ for 2nd/3rd round instead of first. i kinda see it like Urien (meter wise) 1st round = meter gaining for the next round. pretty much though its like, either you not playing as aggressive building meter or your aggressive doing enough dmg that if you have super you might not need to use it/save it

hes really fun to play. i dont even want to play super anymore cuz hes not in it. i havent played it since i played AE the first time. (only went to play twice cuz shit is expensive)

I only got to play like maybe 10 games with Yun yesterday and this is what I noticed.

  • c.mp,c.mp,st.mp xx HK upkicks doesn’t work on all characters (Fuerte was one of them I remember), use lunge punch ender vs. some characters
  • Takes 9 whiffed palms to get 1 EX meter, it’s about the same as whiffing jab shoryu’s with Ryu. Palm counts as a armor breaking projectile, that’s why it cancels out 1 hit on fireballs, and cancels out another Yun/Yang’s palm as well.
  • EX lunge punch is safer than -3, Ryu can’t reversal dp it. All other versions seem pretty punishable.
  • Some people were saying his c.hp was an anti-air? I dunno I didn’t test this out myself.
  • st.lp into c.mp or st.mp into a mp lunge punch works and is pretty easy to do. Whenever you land c.lp, you can go into st.lp, into mp or c.lp, into st.lk_c.lk into jab lunge punch for an easy easy easy hit confirm.
  • Overall all his combos seem pretty easy, c.lk, c.lp, st.lp, st.mp I did on my first try, and same with c.mp, c.mp, st.mp feels like Ryu’s c.mp x2, sweep combo timing.
  • The Twins have a weird hitbox, Sakura’s c.lk, c.lp, c.hp, EX tatsu never works on them.

That’s all I remember off the top of my head, I’m still hella shitty with this character, so yeah… don’t really know wtf I’m doing other than whiff palm to get meter to try and a land a genei jin combo that no one lets me try, haha.

got in about 7 games with Yun today at Video 94
1st impressions

  • you have to input his target combo stand jab / stand short / stand strong really fast…faster than 3s
  • great air to air moveset…jumping back/towards fierce / neutral jump fierce / roundhouse shuts people down
  • grab has decent range, but you have to combo quick after, unlike 3s
  • lunge punch seems safe at max range
  • rapes Dhalsim upclose…if you have good reaction from max range of his palm, you can get CH damage vs Sim’s limbs easily (SPD size damage)
  • his ex shoulder ram has weird properties…sometimes when I did it, my opponent would fly the opposite direction
  • ex shoulder ram shuts down Akuma’s ground / air fireball game badly
  • ex up kick is a great get out jail card vs Ibuki vortex
  • towards + fierce is still a great anti crossup move
  • if he FADC’s out of something on block and dashes forward, it seems like he gets stuffed rather easily
  • ex command grab is great, you can wake up with it, shit is like black magic!

overall he’s a fun character and a welcome change…will post more stuff the next time I play

^ hey fuson, against ibuki i dont think you need to ex rising kick to get out of the vortex. ive seen the direct feed vids where he would just do lk rising kick (since that has invincibility too) to and it stuffed the kunai / beat the vortex.

Played some Yun at Game Galaxy. Here’s my input and questions so far if it helps any. From what I’ve read here so far, I pretty much agree with everything that has been said here. Gonna try to not be redundant as best as I can:

  • The (cr.lk > cr.lp > st.lp > st.mp) and (cr.mp > cr.mp > st.mp) are pretty easy to do. It all definitely feel like 2 frames links to me
  • Gonna agree with Busta and say EX Dragon kick > lp Lunge punch does have some weird timing to it.
  • I was able to do EX Dragon kick > Ultra 1 in the corner a few times, but that was using EX Dragon kick as an anti-air. I tried it grounded against Sagat and it didn’t work. Maybe I fucked up the timing or I just don’t recover on time. More testing will take place
  • st.mp is a good anti-air option for mid-screen jumpins and dive kick characters. Same with st.mk.
  • EX roll has some decent low profile properties. I was able to roll under Dudley’s f.hp and duck on reaction from mid screen.
  • cr.hk xx st.hk beats those who focus a lot.

Matchups:

  • vs Makoto: I got rocked HARD by our local Makoto player. Meaty ass mp is sickening. Buff cr.lk xx EX Hayate is crazy good. Also, Fukiage is a very legit anti-air compared to console. Comes out VERY FAST and has a bigger hitbox. Gotta be weary about jumping in and footsies at this point, especially against the corner with her being able to combo into lp.fukiage after EX Hayate. How was the Yun vs Makoto matchup in 3s? I feel like this matchup has to be played very cautiously since Makoto’s job is to get in and finish the round in less then 10 seconds. I dunno if EX Dragon kick will beat EX Hayate on block. I think it recovers a bit faster. Will test it out.

  • vs Dudley: As I’ve mentioned above, EX roll goes under some of Dudley’s pokes (f.hp, and duck xx punch) More testing will be done to prove this for good. Dudley wasn’t scary when he has no meter since meterless uppercut is ass, but when he has meter, I tended to back off a bit on the dive kick pressures. As for punishing blocked EX Machine Gun, I just EX Dragon Kicked. Dunno if he’s close enough to do target combo into finish. Will test it out of course.

  • vs Sakura: It felt pretty even to me. Gotta be weary of her cr.hp. Very effective anti-air against high dive kicks. Well spaced cross up dive kicks will probably beat it. She definitely got some damage buffs so she’ll knock Yun out a bit quicker. Her cr.mk got better which is dangerous. Felt like who can get the first knock down was able to come out on top.

Questions:

  • Does anyone know the exact properties of EX Lunge punch? Is it safe on block depending on the spacing? It’s really confusing me. I was sometimes able to tech throws and get away with it while on the other hand, I got punished for it from a cr.lp xx lp Lunge punch from another Yun. I saw on some of the new A-cho vids that Yun was able to backdash from it. I’m guessing people don’t know how to punish it properly yet? :open_mouth:
  • How consistent are you guys in getting EX Lunge Punch > U1 in the corner? On day 1, I was able to pull it off all the time. Day 2, not so much. Is it just me and my timing or am I missing something else?
  • Have you guys found any use for U2 yet? I would assume it can punish some of the Blanka balls and maybe Honda’s headbutt if in the correct range. I read that it punished EX Psycho Crush which I am THRILLED to hear.

Also, if anyone wants to ask me to test some stuff, let me know. It’ll definitely help me get some creative juice flowing.

3S matchup vs Makoto, honestly went either way 5-5, It really depends on who has better skill and mindgames, since both them work on mixups and pressure.

i posted couple days ago about this. if you do rising kick and only the 2nd one hits you can lp lunge after it.

@kimjong i think properties of ex lunge is that you can juggle after it (ie you can lunge punch out of it, you already know you can U1 after). um if your doing it up close im sure you can get punished. i heard that if you are counter hitting with the ex lunge it messes up your timing or something for U1? dunno exactly but i remember someone at the arcade telling me this. but if you aredoing 1-2-3 ex lunge doesnt seem like you have a lot of room for error.

Found a few interesting things.
U2 can punish Honda HP Headbutt

U2 punish against blocked EX Psycho (that I was mentioning before… and is appearantly an auto correct), is way to unreliable.
This is because you cannot do it on Reversal timing, otherwise Dict is still airborne and you get like 2hits. You need to wait an extra few frames.

Yun vs Geeef is fucking gay and monotonous…

I may have found I higher damage GJ combo than ones Ive posted before.
I fiddled around with GJ during matches, and bearing in mind that HP palm most likely does the most damage during GJ, followed by fwd.HP, then by fwd.MK.
I came up with this combo (starting around mid screen, and carrying to corner)
Whatever combo you want to cancel into GJ, then:
st.hk, LP.lunge, fwd.mk x3, HP palm (should be in corner by now), fwd.mk, HP palm, MP Lunge, st.mk HJ, MK/HK dive etc.

Also it seems the MK/HK dive against Sagat doesnt let you land behind him, or maybe just my spacing/timing was off, but 3 out of 3 times I used HK dive ender, I landed in front (instead of the usual behind).

Gotcha. Kind of had that same feeling more or less when I was playing… I feel like it could be slightly in Makoto’s favor IMO cause she hits like a freaking freight train in AE, and Yun has sub average health and stun. Both characters definitely seem to have all the tools they need to fuck each other up though.

I know that it gives juggle state, but what I meant by properties is HOW safe is it on block. Like, what was your experience with it when it hit on block? (Did you guys get punished? What was it punished with? Did you get out of it with backdashing and/or throw teching?) As I’ve mentioned before, I was able to tech throw and backdash quite a bit afterwards. I see this in videos quite a bit as well. It’s probably cause that my friends don’t know how to punish it correctly yet. Just wanting some further confirmation. Again, my bad on being too general again.

how much dmg does it do cuz 1-2-3 shoulder into lunge punch during GJ scales it a bit.
