Old games are better!

Yeah I need to import HnK with a quickness.

This actually made me remember the fact that shortcut DPs are in SF4…which in result, fucked up so many Shamwow finishers/setups because instead of the game reading qcfx2+PPP, the game reads it as a EX Soul Throw (which also doesn’t do shit for Rose.) and i’ll end up losing the match/eating damage because of it.

I can sit here imagining Daigo mashing df,df+P hoping it hits for a easy comeback.

I completely agree with all you, I’m gonna go down to my local arcade now, tell everyone they need to drop the shit they are playing, and go back to playing their favourite fighting game out of the list of dozens from the last 20 years. I’m sure they’ll all pick my favourite game.

Also, Ben Reed is a good guy.

funny you should mention that. mori admitted it was HAKU-MEN who’s origin is EXACTLY that.

literally, haku-men was based on a design he made in high school

mori also said that ragna, on the other hand, was inspired by vash the stampede from Trigun

there should’ve been a 3rd option for the poll for the games which are between new and old. when i think of old its st/fhd and new are sf4/tekken 6. games like 3s, cvs2, and marvel doesn’t quite fit in either category.

I laughed.

Also funny.

See this is the real problem with these stupid arguments. All of these games just get lumped into “old” as long as they didn’t just come out. So basically, of course there are going to be more good games among all the games that have ever come out when compared to the games that just came out now. Also, it’s harder to say which games are really “good” out of the ones that are out now, because they haven’t been around as long, and haven’t gotten a chance to be picked apart and figured out over the years, so they don’t seem as “canon” as the old games. Basically it’s impossible for “new games” to win in this kind of an argument.

TBH I enjoy both the older and newer games, the only real miss this year seemed to be SFIV and even that was playable enough to be used whilst waiting for BB and lamenting the fact that no-one was playing Battle Fantasia. (Forgot about KoFXII but it seems everyone else did too :P, won’t judge it till I get my hands on it though)

This brings me to another point, how many people moaning about SFIV actualy bothered to even try the other non-airdashing (apart from Coyori) 2d fighter that came out at the same time?

I see these people moaning about shortcuts and their parrys being gone but it seems very few people actualy noticed that SFIV wasn’t the only damn fighter released this year untill BB came out.

Battle Fantasia had your parrys (whiffable too to make them balenced), it didn’t have shortcuts turning your ultras into DPs or your crouching pokes into reverse DPs, can’t say much about the defensive options for stuff like mashing out the DPs and crossups though simply because even online no-one played the damn thing and when a local scene for fighting games in general isn’t available, finding people offline playing a game which even people online don’t seem to care about (or have even heard of) are pretty damn rare.
(Hell it didn’t even get a slot in SVB which seems to be pretty much the biggest fighting game gathering in England)

I aim to please

Except those people that want more poll options. It’s really not THAT serious.

My 12 hour back to back shifts are terrible for SRK.

Battle Fantasia came out way before SF4. No throw invul to command grabs on wakeup, silly Ashley infinite, Cedric. That, on top of some lame character designs (some were cool or at least alright), and the game was a little boring in some ways. Not ambitious enough, I guess?

At the time BF came out, there wasn’t really a huge reason to play it over 3S which is a better version of the same base idea but with Street Fighter characters and people love Street Fighter characters.

For all that, I like Battle Fantasia and kinda wish ArcSys did more with it… but it wasn’t exactly a huge hit, so I doubt it’ll happen.

Just to be clear, off the top of my head here are the characters who have pretty easy normal/special to ultra moves w/o use of FADC (includes moves that trade and pop opponent into the air):

Rufus
Viper
Sagat
Ryu
Bison (netural jump FK into ultra, opponent has to REALLY not be paying attention though)
Boxer
Abel
Gouken (from throw but a poor option really)

If you don’t choose one of these characters but the opponent does, you are automatically in a piss poor situation if you and the opponent are around 25 % health.

For example, Rufus has a kick (it’s not slow and I don’t know the command because I never play Rufus) that pops the opponent up that will connect into ultra. This is really dumb no matter how you dissect it.

When the loketest were being done, there was a topic going on about Ultra moves and if they would be a problem. I thought it would be a problem because if I spend the match mind raping someone and they get me into an ultra that destroys 50 % of my health, I’m annoyed. Hell and that was before the first time I saw Ryu CANCEL A SHORYUKEN.

Not sure about Cedric but the Ashley infinate was definately fixed with the console version and I think it’s the same with the command grab stuff (will have to test it next time I remember).

Guess that could have put off people who played it at arcades before the console version came and fixed stuff though.

I prefer older games like ST, Karnov’s Revenge, Alpha 2, and HF. The games seem more in tune with the basics of fighting games, and match ups matter more. You’ll often change your entire strategy to suit one match up in those games. A2 does come close to the universal mechanic/combo abuse we see a lot of nowadays, but thaat’s the charm: A2 is so old school, and not at the same time.

That, and the games are just more fun and intense.

I still dig SFIV, BB, and especially T6, tho.

I like games that are great… new or old!

Good Shit, man.

I like all games, at least in terms of the numbered SF series:

ST/HDR:Not much to say about this. The granddaddy of all fighting games. The speed of the games and the perfect blend of combos, footsies, mindgames and matchups. It embodies what SF is about, no extra mechanics or “gimmicks”, just you and your opponent 3 punches,3 kicks,a joystick and a super. No wonder OG players like John Choi are able to beat their opponents in SF4, regardless of experience in that specific game, ST taught them the core of street fighter. This also makes it the core street fighter game to play. Not to mention the stunning presentation of the game, it has the most memorable music, stages, characters and moves. There really isn’t much more to be said about the game.

3S:I won’t sit here and list the reasons why this game bombed in terms of sales and exposure, this has been said too many times. The game is pure street fighter, it just reinterprets the series with new characters and a whole different feel but still stays true to the original concepts of SF. Of course the new mechanics in the game add an insane amount of depth into it. I can’t remember where I read this but someone once said “Depth in fighting games is just simply the amount of options your character has in any situation” and 3s has this in spades. The essence of this game can only really be captured in next level play.Yes, I say next level because just high level 3s play does not really express what the games engine can do. For “next level” play just look at the Japanese elite,Kuroda in particular. This is the problem with this game though, the character variation just never really took off outside of Japan. I believe all characters in the game can be played on this next level, just look at Kuroda,Sugiyama,Pino,Kokujin etc. They all play characters outside of the top 5 and they almost make them look broken. Other things that I find amazing about 3rd strike are the character animations/graphics and the music. The animation is still on par with modern day 2d fighters(albeit not in HD) and the music is just amazing to me. Easily the best in the series, looking at it as actual real music and not just video game music. I just don’t think any other game has implemented hip hop and “urban” music so well into a game. Any true hip hop fan will know that the drums, scratches, breakbeats used are actually very authentic and don’t feel like Soulja boy style computerized depthless pieces of shit. The fact that they sample the “amen” break in Necros music and use James brown’s “hit me” sample in the continue music. The whole gritty feel of the game was captured very nicely. Recently I’ve been listening to DJ Kariu, someone who has remixed alot of the music in 3s and it is just beautiful. Just listen to his 1FcbAuCU55Q]Jazzy NYC Remix or Necro’s stage. He also has a beautiful version of .

SF4: It’s obvious to anyone who has played the game that the game has been dumbed down compared to 3s and ST, to make it more accessible to newcomers to the series. You can’t blame Capcom for this, because if it didn’t have more up to date graphics, if it didn’t have fancy ultra combos the game would have not have sold as well and it would have been another (or perhaps the final) nail in the coffin for the SF series. However even though the game is dumbed for casual players, the game is still extremely fun to watch and play at higher levels. No one can deny the hype of the SF4 tournaments in the past year. And this hype has to come from somewhere right? I think SF4 is still a complex game at high level. Almost all SF knowledge can be applied to the game and as long as combos, setups and mind games still exist in an SF game, there will always be more layers to the game than people think. I think this level of complexity is also gauged a little bit better than 3s, from the audiences point of view, because of the character diversity. In the past year we have seen the whole damn cast in all tournaments, including major ones. To be honest I can’t quite put my finger on why I love SF4, it is a love/hate relationship really. But you can’t deny that stuff like Yeb’s gen at WCW and Justins Fei Long at SBIV show that this game isn’t as simple as you think and the matches they played were extremely fun to watch. I would also like to say thank you to livestreaming and in particular, the FADC crew for proving quality live streams for people like me in the UK, to watch. Of course the game has many other problems, which others have detailed in the thread. I agree with most of it, but that’s why Super is coming out, to (hopefully) fix these issues.

Of course my opinion is pretty much biased in the fact that I have not been playing fighting games seriously very long and haven’t ever been to a tournament or anything like that. What I have done though, is do a lot of research into the fighting game community, looking at the history of it in particular and using stuff like youtube and this site to soak up as much information about every game as I can. I’ve watched all of the youtube videos, I’ve listened to all the podcasts and I’ve read all the forums. Some would say my opinion doesn’t count for shit because I’ve got all my knowledge from the internet, and I would agree with you on this. Learning about anything first hand in real life is infinitely better than using the internet, going to the arcade is really the only way to truly experience fighting games. But the reality is that as the culture grows older and as the veterans retire, people like me who find most of their info online will be more common.

I’d say the animation in 3rd strike is superior to a lot of current day fighters, even the 3D ones. When you go through the sprite animations frame-by-frame, you realise just how professional and charismatic it is. Real great sense of physics on a lot of the movements. It’s one thing I’ve always found very impressive about that game.

Yeah I find Necro’s animation to be the pinnacle of the games spritework. The way he bends and stretches is done absolutely perfectly. 12 also has superb animation.

That Rufus kick is highly punishable on block and you should always be looking for it. I get your point but it’s got a massive flaw attached to it unlike SRK FADC which is pretty much unpunishable on block so it’s kind of a bad example.
