No questions from me right now, just want to give an extra big thanks to Matt Moylan for being so professional and just really good at answering questions! Ah, I wish SRK still had the clapping smilie but this will have to suffice -
I love Street Fighter 3 to the core but if you had to push it to the side for Street Fighter 4 that would only make since from a buisiness stand point. I know Street Fighter 3 going to be amazing when it comes so I can wait it out. 2009 going to be a great year.
Of course. how can any Street Fighter fan resist collecting all of UDON’s Street Fighter goodness.
I got issue 1B of SFIIT, but recently I’ve been thinking I also want to get 1A. aaaahhh! both covers were just too good, but in the end my preference for Alvin’s work won me over to B.
Might have to get me a softcover of Street Fighter Tribute too, so I can keep my hardcover version pristine.
TYT on the Rockman manga, though I would like to know if there is any chance you may release the mangas that Etsuya Amajishi did.
To be exact the mangas he did for some SNK games?
The ones I know of are:
He did mangas for all 3 Art of Fighting games, and he 2 mangas that focused on Geese Howard and how he became the badass mo-fo crime lord we all know and love.
1- now than Gen has been confirmed to be in Street Fighter IV and that he clearely was killed in the udon comic series, how would you guys explain his return? do you have to retcon his fate?
Not looking at any SNK games right now. They have some interesting properties for sure, but the SNK characters are just not that popular in North America compared to others like Street Fighter. It’s might be tough to sell enough copies to make the book profitable.
Gen’s definitely dead for us. As a seperate continuity from the games, we are not bound to following the game story exactly - UDON’s comics have always been a combination of the best elements from each game.
But if you GOTTA have yourself some Gen, your are in luck. Look for him to show up at some point in Chun-Li Legends, which is set several years before Gen died.
Look for it on shelves probably the last Wednesday of Novemeber. Could be one week earlier, but last week of November at the latest.
Yeppers. Well, at least he buried someone… let’s hope it was Gouken.
True. Though the two often add to each other, like when Karin and Dark Ryu made the jump from the manga to the game.
AS for the official canon, it’s tough to keep track of since Capcom has retconned things so many times and also all the game info does not totally mesh together all the time. That’s part of the reason why UDON pick the best elements rather thn try to rigidly follow game continuity.
@Matt- First off I don’t mean any offense with this post I’m making, so plz don’t take it the wrong way;
I don’t think that readers not knowing what AoF is, is a reason to go against releasing the book; I haven’t heard of any of the Korean comics UDON is publishing, yet I wouldn’t mind reading them.
If you back up the publication of the book with good ‘advertising’ (for lack of a better word), it could sell well enough.
Granted though, perhaps its main weak point is the appeal to the art, most of those who are into manga are usually attracted to ‘newer’ art styles rather than classic ones…then again that never stopped the appeal to the SF mangas in the US.
So really the only problem with publishing the book in the US would be, if people will be interested in getting it/appeal to the book.
Regarding Gen’s death BTW; what if his appearance in SF4 is integral to the plot? Will you retcon his death in the original SFII book or will you just have him be like a zombie or ghost?
One other question, that has been nagging me since day 1; who will you make the winner of the tourney in SFII? Ryu or ChunLi?
Being less popular is not the only factor. It is also very expensive to license video game manga, this is why you don’t see too much of it over here. You have to pay royalties to the Japanese Artist, Japanese Publisher, Japanese Game Company, and depending on the company structure, probably also the American branch of the company.
So it is not just the greater risk of a less popular title, but the expensive of game manga compare to other manga. Not to say we would never do it but those are the challenges.
He’ll stay dead in our continuity, it as a pretty pivotal moment for the character so we wouldn’t want to cheapen that. As I said before we won’t be following the game story exactly - a straight up adaptation would be kind of boring. Instead we are keeping all the origins and backstory of the new crew, but lets just say they will be going on a different adventure.
Hah, you’ll have to read an find out… maybe neither!
UDON’s books are very much official comics, if not directly part of the game continuity.
And the SF game story has definitely never been precise, just look at all the debates fans have over it There is no official document in a drawer a Capcom that lays out the whole continuity. Last Capcom Japan told us, they generally consider each game it’s own continuity. This sort of reconciles all the conflicting stuff.

i meant they werent part of the offical SF canon, just to clear out =D
i just saw the press release for the upcoming sfIV comic series.
i have couple question abt that if you can answer them:
1- it looks like the story is occuring at the same time as the sf2 turbo, is this the case?
2- since this sf4 comic miniseries appears to be like a prequel to the sf4 main storyline will there be another street fighter IV comic series after sf2 turbo finishes ?
3- is charlie dead?? why is he in the cover of sfIV # 1 ???
4- can we expect street fighter 3 comics right after the sf2 turbo finishes or after the street fighter IV comics that might come after street fighter 2 turbo ?
5- not a question but Joe ng’s art style is AWESOME, i really wished if he was the one behind sf2 turbo comics, i really have a hard time swallowing Chamba’s art style for the comic, i believe his style would have worked in a bonus story or some spinoff issues but as the main artist for the main sf storyline it just seems out of place. Arnold tsang, alvin lee and now joe ng’s art syle seems in the same realm of reality, they are all anime like dramwing, while chamba’s art is original i just doesnt fit well with the others, especially that sf2 turbo is the over hyped conclusion of the main sf2 story. i am sorry if appear like a hater, it just that i was a bit dissapointer in the quality of art for the sf2 turbo. The story is of course spectacular as usual. I hope Chamba’s art style gets improved and that he start drawing more bacjground elements, as really every panel’s background is so empty or sometimes consists of one color only.
i believe what makes even harder to swallow, is the upcoming sf2thd remix whis will be released this month and drawn by udon a la alvin lee/ tsang’s art style so when we play the game and then look at the comic story of street fighter 2 it just makes it look inferior to the game in terms of art.
sorry Matt if i sound harsh on Chamba, he is a great artist i just dont think his style fits with street fighter comic world created by Udon.
ps: cant wait for sf4 miniseries, and it is in february, so just in time when the game gets finally released.
So now you guys are not going to do a SF 3 comic and instead do a sf 4 comic? so the sf 3 characters only get 4 pages for just 3 turbo comics (8-10)?
This is really sad news and extremely disappointing. Capcom wants to further themselves from sf 3 and you guys are now following behind. I was a huge supporter of you guys but doing this to sf 3 and its characters is close to the final straw for me to give up your comic and possibly sf all together. If Capcom wants to drop sf 3 characters and put them off as a memory, then that is too big of a deal for to ever just get over since i absolutely love the sf 3 characters (and other fans do as well).
I wish you luck with your sf series, but this is too disheartening for me as Oro, Gill, Ibuki, Alex, Urien, Twelve, Makoto, Q, Remy, Dudley, Necro, Effie, Hugo, Poison, Sean, Elena, Yun and Yang do NOT deserve this.
where do they say that at ,Sano? sorry to sound so mean, but this is just so disheartening right now. I want to be able to enjoy all of sf like i always have, sf 4 characters are great as they all are, but I just can’t do that with sf 3 characters being totally screwed over and being almost dropped from the series entirely (at least that is the route is has been headed).
so as huge of a fan I am, this is just tearing me apart. But I hope you are right, Sano.
and Matt, will all of the sf 3 characters be in the comics (the 16 playables and Poison and Effie)?
and are 8 through 10 the only backups that the sf 3 characters will be appearing in? if so, does this mean their comic will be coming shortly after?
Matt can give you a clearer answer when he comes around but right here it says delay. Not a cancellation, a delay. Which means it is still coming. If he said cancellation then that would mean the end of an SF3 comic.
