It’s not MarkMan/S-Kill I don’t have faith in, it’s the people spending the money for the development of the product at Mad Catz.
The company hasn’t demonstrated that they’re even slightly interested producing the high quality peripherals - rather something cheap to make that will sell well (ie; Street Fighter branded controllers).
I would absolutely love to be proven wrong, I really would.
Among us hardcore gamers, most know that MadCatz has generally really bad, ugly, bulky, cheap-feeling products but with MarkMan and S-Kill behind this, I really think they’re really going to make a good stick here. I mean MarkMan is saying that he cannot give much info but he did state that a lot of research has gone into this. Don’t you think this research shows that most hardcore players prefer Sanwa JLF, ball top, sanwa buttons with jap layout? (I know not ALL players prefer that setup but an overwhelming majority does) I’m pretty sure we probably won’t get those exact parts but I have a good feeling that we will get something VERY similar if not better. Are some of you afraid or not willing to accept that there can be a better stick than a Sanwa? I myself have a HRAP2 with modded with sanwa buttons and it is a DAMN good stick but it would be really cool if someone could make something even better (a shorter engage than Sanwa JLF-TP-8Y maybe?) I highly doubt that Markman and S-Kill are just selling out to MadCatz and hyping up a product that will be crap (because they have been a part of this community for a very long time) so I’m behind him on this and ask that you guys just have a little more faith. I saw a LOT of really good ideas on this thread so far but my favorite is the one about maybe having a removable panel where we can insert our own downloadable custom art. I think this would REALLY be cool and make sticks more unique. It would also help to deter thieves from stealing sticks at tournaments like how Jchensor had his stick stolen at Evo2k8 (poor guy).
To MarkMan: It’s good that you always have your ear to the streets especially on a big project like this so best of luck and can’t wait for the stick!! Keep your eye on this thread cuz I’m sure you’ll get a lot of good ideas.
P.s.- Since you’re over there at MadCatz you should go ahead and suggest some T6 sticks too
QDs you can live without, as long as wires are used to attach the buttons you can add your own QDs super easy. That plus standard hole sizes is really what you need right?
I don’t even mean Happ diameter. Every damn stick that uses Japanese parts (except the HRAPS) use those cheap clip buttons so you have to grind down the metal top plate to get real Sanwas to fit. I did that once and that was enough.
I hear ya…I have made quite a few custom sticks for people, and have never had the correct size hole saws, so would have to cut the holes smaller, then use a dremel to fit the holes to size. Talk about a pain in the ass. Finally got off my butt and ordered the 2 correct sizes last week lol.
I never, ever want to have to dremel another hole to fit again…
Then again, I would rather have the hole size smaller, and be able to be dremeled to correct size, than have a hole to large for 30mm.
Anybody who’s posting shit like “if it isn’t perfect to my personal specifications I’m going to kill myself” should climb a mountain right now, and if it doesn’t give you a better sense of perspective, jump off for me. There are a lot of other ways this could rock.
What if they can build us something as high-quality as the old Namco stick for $50? It doesn’t matter that they’re knockoff/imintation/clone parts if they’re this good. This would probably be a greater victory for the playerbase as a whole than some brand-authentic wonder that costs $200. How many more people would this bring out to tournaments? I know there are a lot of dudes who (re)started playing fighting games seriously just because they managed to snag a T5 or SFAC stick on clearance from EB/Gamestop.
What if they build us one that’s shit out of the box, but is diiiirt-cheap, has a great PCB, and is very easily moddable? Like four screws, stock parts out, good parts in. That’d be pretty cool, if you ask me!
Truthfully, it’s not even the end of the world if it isn’t good. Hori has already provided a boatload of options, and I don’t doubt that they’ll make an (importable) SF4-edition when the time comes. MAS makes 360 sticks. There are excellent PS2>PS3 and PS2>PC converters. Well-made custom sticks are cheaper and more abundant than ever… and as a very last option, building yourself is really, really fun.
Make the case out completely out of solid gold, put in Sanwa parts and sell it at a <$100 price point.
That would definitely make me buy without hesitation.

I dunno, man. I mean, I guess it would be heavy enough that it won’t slide around while you’re playing, but what if somebody bites it? I wouldn’t pay $90 for an arcade stick someone can easily ruin using only their teeth; people are liable to do craaazy things when you beat them!
That’s silly because they would not sell as well as individual ones. Besides, I believe that all of the SF4 cabs are single-seaters anyway. (I think they do make two-player control panels for the Vewlix but SF4 only uses the one-player panels because all its cabs are head-to-head, linked together. Or more accurately, heads-to-heads, clustered in a little mini-network.)
