Official SSF2T: HD Remix General Discussion Thread

LOL. Bro, you’re taking my comments too seriously, personally and out of context.
It’s SRK man, chill out.

What you’re suggesting is like an AE version of SF. But in your case you want ALL versions of ALL street fighter characters? That my friend is mugen-like and not very apealing. I’m pretty sure many would agree. Alpha, SF2, SF3 are very different ecosystems and involve different gameplays. One series does not belong in another. It’s just not right. Might be interesting but not something that’s tourney worthy.

Patches are good, but let’s hope they are few and far between. Not because I don’t like the idea of patches, but more because I hope they are not needed since the game will be bug/glitch free and properly balanced.

Peace out dood. :wgrin:

As unlikely as it may be, I would love to see Joe, Retsu and Geki and Lee come out of retirement.

I can dream, can’t I?

Whatever to downloadable characters, I’m not thrilled about the idea. If Capcom were to come out with a NEW game with all sorts of random characters inserted into SF2-style gameplay, that’d be great and potentially really interesting, but to cram new characters into HD Remix would be really, really dumb.

HD Remix stuffed with new characters would pretty much be “a new game with all sorts of random characters inserted into SF2-style gameplay”. Not that I don’t understand what you were trying to say though.

Yea, but it still amounts to being unfair. There will always be bad/good matchups in SF2, and no matter how balanced a new character might be, it would still have these types of matchups.

Free is the way to beeee

Yeah, that is his fake FB.

He already has one. lol

I don’t understand why so many people seem to be against the idea of DLC upgrades. What’s wrong with a pack of extra stages or a few more characters? As long as any new characters that are added are relatively balanced with the rest of the cast, then I don’t see the problem.

I mean, we’re all fine with buying $50~200 controllers to play these games, but an *optional *add-on pack that’d probably cost like $2~10 turns you off? I don’t get it.

i personally dont mind dlc. dl an hd remix upgrade, with more stuff. that would be cool. keeps the game fresh. saying you dont want the characters and changes further down the road is like saying you didnt want ce, or hf, or ssf2, or even ST. or when sf3 comes out, you didnt want 2i or 3s.

i think a lot of people forget that alot of these games became great through several revisions, added characters, added moves, added mechanics, etc…

I dont believe in the segregation shit. its gonna happen no matter what game it is. unreal tournament 3 is out, yet ut2k4 is still played. just because ut2k4 was a huge game, does that mean the company should not move forward and improve their product? keeping it fresh and give it more longevity? if that were the case, sequels would not exist.

im not saying to add dlc every month or something with little ticky tacky addons. i say wait 6-12 months atleast, give us a nice dlc content addon, all in one shot. you keep releasing little addons here and there, in tiny spurts, constantly, people wil lget lost in the sauce.

these are hella pipedreams tho. =)

I think you’ve highlighted the optimal word there on why it would be such a bad idea. It’s optional. Which means DLC characters will never be allowed in tournaments. Which means we can never really take them seriously. The only way they can be allowed is if they become required.

while you are totally right james. i do think we, as tourney players, would more than likely dump out 10+ bucks for an upgrade with more tweaks and characters. while the casual will more than likely not. then it comes down to whether its a smart business decision to take such a path. i mean, this is one of the reasons of sf2’s downfall in the 90s, too many upgrades to the same game started to only interest the hardcore.

of course im a hardcore and will plunk down at revisions. but will it be worth it financially? too many double edged swords =(

This doesn’t compute to me for two reasons.

  1. Nothing would force you to play as the new characters. But even if you didn’t buy the add-on pack, you’d still be able to play against the new characters. So, I don’t see why the tourney crowd couldn’t take them seriously.

  2. Just for argument’s sake, let’s say that the tourney crowd wouldn’t take a character add-on pack seriously. OK. But I still don’t see why that’d make this a bad idea. Most of the people playing the game don’t go to tournies. If you’re playing for fun and someone picks a character that’s not tourney-legal, it’s not like it ruins the game. And this is especially so if the characters aren’t over-powered like the typical extra characters in home ports.

As for me, I think I really understand what they were going for with Balrog’s music. They wanted a modern Las Vegas feel to it. And for whatever reason it really fits! I thought I’d play the original version of Sexy Trunks for ST in my emulator - it ain’t gonna work because that version of Sexy Trunks is way too slow. Oh well… Definitely one of the best I’ve heard.

When Sirlin first commented about the possibility of downloadable characters I was interested and thought how cool it would be. Then I thought about the implications. Balance, acceptance and a divided community are the first things that come to my mind. As much as i’d like for Capcom\backbone to keeps things fresh and interesting, i’m scared it might cause more harm than good.
I guess they could try with maybe one new character and test it see how that goes. But anyways, what are the possibilities of dl characters? We might be arguing a moot point.

How much would new downloadable characters cost? How much would be both affordable and profitable, when compared against additional Udon artwork expense, character design, balancing efforts, and additional programming? Would they have stories (a little more expense), or would they just be storyless extras? If the game does support game balance patches post-release, then new characters bring more risk of balance issues. (At the same time, they might be an excuse to push through balance patches that otherwise might not happen.)

There are three sources of characters: Upgrading from SF1, downgrading from post-ST, and creating brand new designs. Each has its pros and cons. Post-ST characters would need material removed to bring them in line with ST designs, and removing material risks complaint (think CvS1) and risks removing aspects that define a character. Adding material to SF1 characters is complaint-wise safer than removing from post-ST characters, but the remaining SF1 characters are less known. Creating new characters gives the most freedom, but risks rejection if those characters are not seen as “SF”.

My guess, on the unlikely event it even happens, is that the first two characters considered would be Dan and Sakura. Both are popular. Both are known from a design standpoint. Both are relatively basic to bring in line, versus some of the weirder possible characters. For balance purposes, their designs could be intentionally aimed towards to lower end of the scale, as people would accept the two characters storywise being weaker than the rest of the cast. And Udon seems to like them.

As really really stupid and unreasonable as this sounds…

  1. Nothing is forcing you to play as the new characters. But if you go into a tourney, you will face them. And because you’ve never played against them, you will die to all their tricks. 'Cause you don’t know what they are. Of course, the answer is obvious: shell out the money to buy the characer and learn them, idiot!!! BUT, what that essentially does is FORCE a financial constraint onto a player. In other words, if someone decides to get into STHD late, after 5 characters are released (each character at 10 bucks), now the player, in order to be competitive, HAS TO spend an extra 50 bucks to get all the characters and learn them for tourney play. Maybe 50 bucks just ISN’T POSSIBLE for someone who is financially constrained. And thus, he will never be able to win a tourney because he can’t spend 50 dollars.

Again, it sounds totally retarded. I admit it completely. But it IS a factor, one that cannot be ignored. You simply cannot say, “Well, then, poor people will have a disadvantage and have to try and find another way to learn those characters.” It’s why characters like Blood Iori could NEVER be considered for tournament use, even though they existed in CvS2. They only existed on home versions, and those of us who ONLY played on arcade would be at a disadvantage. That’s why they were never legal before.

Again, I fully admit there is very little logic behind that reasoning, but it can’t be ignored, regardless of how ridiculous it sounds.

  1. Yeah, you CAN play them for fun. And then you learn one character, he’s your favorite, you kick ass with him against your actually really good friends, but then come tourney time, you have to play some other characer. In other words, you couldn’t ever really play him seriously and shouldn’t really waste time with him because he can’t be used in tourneys. And that’s a bummer.

And YES, again, these are ALL arguments pertaining towards tourney players ONLY. So yeah, as a casual thing, it’ll be fun to have, and totally cool and totally worth it and would probably make decent money. It would just be a bummer in a way for the tourney scene because it causes some weirdness.

This may sound counterintuitive, but I don’t want them to keep things too fresh. I really like the fact that Super Turbo has been the same game for a decade and a half because all that time has really let us bring out as much as we can in the game, and even now we haven’t brought out everything. There are still some unexplored things in the game and differences in strategy and takes on characters in different locations, and our scene has a lot of growing to do yet. Chances are HDR will cut that off here and we’ll all switch to this new game, but I want this new game to have the same lasting power. I want it to be able to mature and I want to figure out everything about it, and I think that’ll take something closer to a dozen years than a dozen months.

Like, I don’t need a new version of chess to come out very often, the centuries-old version of chess we have today more than tides me over; I like learning and playing it, it has a lot of depth, and even the best players haven’t figured out everything about it yet because strategies keep evolving. I feel the same way about Street Fighter.

I think importing non-SF2 characters into the SF2 system would be really interesting and make for some very cool play, but I’d want that to be done in some other game, SF2: Even Newer Challengers or something, not in HDR.

I don’t see how anybody can support downloadable characters unless they’re fans service throw aways like Evil Ryu, Mech Zangief, or Violent Ken. Too many companies already use DLC to cut their games into pieces so they can charge more for it. Release DLC as real expansions and don’t try to nickel and dime us.

Call me nuts, but I think ST has plenty of great characters as it is. Introducing more runs a risk of both unbalancing and disrupting the classic atmosphere of the game.

It’s not that I don’t want to see new SF characters. I just don’t particularly want them in this game.

There’s still stuff to discover in ST? WHERE?

I guess I’m on the “for a character expansion” side of the fence. Of course all of the issues are valid, such as creating a divide, maintaining balance, choosing the right characters. But I can recall every arcade release of SF2 and how refreshing it was to see additions to the game–be it new moves, colors, or characters. HDR is a new game, and the classic ST is still there in case anyone thinks the new stuff is just whacko. It sounds crazy, but I think a tasteful addition to HDR would increase my enjoyment of the game so long as nothing gets broken. Pipe dream anyway…

Edit: I should also note it’s my opinion that the best approach is probably choosing some of the most popular characters from other SF series that also seem to fit into the SF2 mold the best, and keep it to a one-time, all-inclusive expansion.
