I get what you’re saying and I’m certainly not looking down on your opinion: it might end up being mine too. However, I’m not so sure you get what I’m saying.
I know voice chat can be disabled on both. I’m not arguing that one online service is better than the other. I’m defffffinitely not claiming that everyone on SRK is great at SF, especially older editions. I also do believe that there will be great players on both versions regardless of anything.
What I am saying is that there is a decent chance one of the two consoles will eventually have a notably better scene than the other, and nobody knows for sure which console that will be right now, and I just hope that if this happens I bought the “right” console.
Also, SRK is currently the best unified pool of good online SF2 players assembled in one place unless you’re directly including online services such as GGPO, 2DF, PSN, XBL, whatever. It’s not brimming full with experts, but it has more of them than anywhere else!
You made one statement I want to directly call on though.
"The fact is that XBL has a MUCH bigger pool of players. More players = more comp"
XBL as a whole has way more players than PSN, no doubt! That naturally gives it the advantage in having a larger SFHD community, but nobody can guarantee that at all, especially as SFHD’s “new game” status eventually wears off. Also, while a larger pool of players of course gives more potential for high skill to exist within it, more comp does not automatically equate to better comp.
This made me think of something else I’d rather add. I thiiiink I’d prefer to have access to a smaller number of hardcore players than a huuuge number of casual players. That’s an unimportant detail though and I know a lot of people would disagree with me entirely, and I’m not even 100% sure if that is how I feel. It’s worth considering though that the smaller community may just be leaner, not worse. Trimming the fat isn’t necessarily a bad thing if what’s left is an excellent premium cut of meat. Unless there isn’t enough meat left to get your fill of it, which could happen to.
Honestly, I didn’t even bother mentioning it before, but there’s a verrry minute chance that one version will flat-out play better than the other. Capcom promising us they’ll both be the same is great and all, and I do believe them, but broken promises are far from unheard of with this kind of stuff. What if the PS3 version speeds up and slows down haphazardly, or depending on stage/character? To hell if any competitive players will want to deal with that shit if the 360 version is consistently butter-smooth.
The superior online service does not necessarily guarantee the best SFHD experience. I readily admit that it certainly doesn’t hurt its odds, but I’m (literally) not putting down any money yet. That’s a gamble I’m not particularly interested in losing, you get me?
If we both end up on the same console, we’ll play and have a good time.
