Official Mad Catz FightPad Feedback Thread

For people unsure of whether to buy: ask your store’s return policy. Say that you have heard there’s a lot of defective pads, so can you return if it is a bad one? Gamestop should allow this, and people have been returning to Best Buy too (but always ask to be sure). If you get a good one it’s better than the 360 pad for sure. If yours is unacceptable to you… merely return (or exchange it). Again, having owned 2 pads, I can say diagonals can be much better on one than another.

I’ve noticed many times it’s game variable based on how easy special moves come out. Melty Blood PC version is the easiest so far. I get nearly as good success rates as on Saturn Pad. HD Remix has a harder time than even 3S (PC emulated). With SF4’s inputs I’m hoping for the best. I’ll find out in a few days…

madcatz should really react and fix the fightpads produced in the future (if they dont come in limited numbers i dont know). are they already informed about the issues with the pads? any reaction so far?

I was gonna do that ,but i live in Denmark. And in denmark there is not any pads in the shops, or any Street Fighter IV gear. Not yet anyway… Soooh, does anybody know wether or not they are coming to european stores?

Strange, the buttons on the Chunli pad look nothing like the ones sold on the casual market.

Maybe I’m just imagining things…

I live in Italy and the guy at gamestop told me that the fightpads and sticks should arrive on launch day. I pre-ordered a fightpad and right now, after reading so many bad feedbacks, I’m pretty worried about it…I know I can return it to the store if it has some problem, but if the quality of the product is so below average, even if I get an apparently perfect one probably it won’t last long. And what is worse is that I can’t even chose to spend a little more and buy the SE FightStick cause from what I heard so far it looks more like a ready-to-assemble IKEA Fightstick that won’t work properly unless you open it up and disassemble to fix or change the parts.
Damn, all I want is to be able to play Street Fighter decently.

The picture is of an older prototype of the FightPad.

So, I still haven’t had any luck with getting 2 FightPads for the PS3 to work at the same time? Has anyone else had this problem, or successfully got both to work? I’m getting really ticked off with this. What happens is any of the following things:

  • one controller stops working, and the usb receiver light starts to blink
  • one controller continues to input random directions on the Dpad (so the characters starts jumping up and down, moving left to right uncontrollably)
  • if the above happens, and i turn the controller OFF, the character still continues to jump up and down and so forth
  • 1st player controller suddenly controls 2nd player, and vice versa

Both controllers work perfectly fine when only one is plugged in, but as soon as both are plugged in, all hell goes loose. This includes at the PS3 main system menu too, not just in game (I’ve been testing on HD Remix). I’ve tried different USB slots 1-4 and still no go…

Seriously, did MadCatz really screw up this bad? Please, anyone with similar PS3 experience speak up!

Thanks! I am gonna order one of those from that chinese guy to use for my pc. Might get a fightpad too to test it out, always played on pad, but going to try stick this year too. Is the usb saturn pad an exact same replica of the dpad on the originals? Cause I was tearing it up with those!

I own two of these Saturn USB pads. They are actually made by Sega, so they are not replica’s, they are the real deal. They are 99.9% identical to the Sega Saturn Model 2 controllers, and they are a dream. This is the pinnacle of digital controllers. There will likely never be something as good.

They work on both PC and Playstation3.

The only bummer (no fault of sega’s) is that the Saturn USB pads don’t work on PS3’s backwards compatible titles at all. If you are a pad player, and you are planning on getting SFIV on PS3, do not hesitate for a second to pick one or two of these up. They’re the best anything is going to be.

I will tell you this; If we were ever going to get something close to the quality of the Saturn pad’s it was going to be these MadCatz pads. If only the diagonals registered, it would be top tier.

I swear there’s a little difference between the US Model 2 Saturn Pads and the USB Saturn Pad. The d-pad feels ever so slightly different. I actually believe it’s better. The shoulder buttons are actually noticeably different, because they can get clicked in more. I also feel that the face buttons are harder to get EX moves out of on the USB pad versus my ‘real’ Saturn pad. But again, I use shoulder buttons so whatever.

I prefer it to my real Saturn pad, basically. I rarely make a mistake on the d-pad.

I bought 2 PS3 fightpads today and am having an issue that I havent seen anything about yet. So I bought 2, one for me and one for a friend. I opened mine, hooked it up, no issues at all in the almost 2 hours I played.

I go to his place and go to show it off as they are busting the other out of the plastic. Synced fine and played great for one match. Midway thru the second match it decided to lose sync out of nowhere. Ken continued to walk backwards as the home button just blinked. The other controller hadnt even been hooked up or batteries placed into it for that matter when this happened. Tried all sorts of stuff to get it to recognize the USB hookup, all didnt work. We got his hooked up finally, worked fine. Still, mine wouldnt work.

I try when I get home on my PS3. Still wont sync up. The USB blinks at a steady pace while my actual Fightpad blinks almost twice as fast. The two never sync up, and I have no idea what to do. Really irks me  I havent found anything on it yet…

I played with my replacement fightpad over the weekend and it’s still holding up. I really wanted this pad to work out but it’s still not meeting my expectations because i’m left wondering if my controller is crappy or my execution is off or if I need to break it in more. I hope another run will address these issues and make the ps3 pad usb. My buddy ordered a couple saturn pads from ebay so i’ll be using the madcatz fightpad as a backup.

is it possible to fix issues with the diagonals/sticking by opening it up? i really want a chun pad but i cant be bothered to keep sending them back

is it possible its an issue similar to the washers in the fightstick?

I don’t think anyones pad is sticking, I just think that the diagonals take more pressure to hit than the four regular directions, and I’m pretty sure that’s only because the d-pad is so large its more difficult to hit two directions at once (ie U/R)

But since there are other defects, I suggest buying one in-store so you can return it easily…

No, no one is going to be hitting U/R on these controllers. They have an 8-way d-pad, meaning that up and right is its own direction, upright.

I have a $20 saitek controller for my PC that I use for various games. The layout is very similar to a PS2 controller, except with a large (about the same size as the fightpad’s) floating, 8-way d-pad. I don’t have any problems hitting diagonals, or doing shoryukens, HCBs, etc.
I hope I luck out and get one of the working fightpads on Wednesday, and I hope the rest of you find some way to fix the whole Madcatz shafting you thing.

I swear… YOU DO NOT PLAY WITH UR THUMB (right hand)… U play with ur fingers like you do on an arcade stick. There’s no use for L/R, waste of space…

I think the buttons should of had a japanese snk style style, or even the same layout as the arcade stick with 8 buttons on the front. that WOULDA BEEN DOPEeeeeeeeee.

This fightpad really got me thinkin about transferring over to a stick. I might graduate sooner or later.

I don’t think that’s true… I’m pretty sure the d-pad is only 4-directions. As in, a contact for up, down, left, and right. Why would they make eight contacts?

Someone should rip one open and make sure, because I swear it’s only four.

And if someone DOES rip one open, please tell me if they are common ground or not! I need another pcb for my arcade machine

Update. I have been playing 3rd strike the anniversary alot today and I found the diag jumping to be getting better. Maybe it is a breaking in thing. 3rd strike has been more diag friendly from the start.

I played the hd version tonight as well and the diag response has been great as well. At times it will jump straight up but not as much.

I also played rtypes and the dpad response was excellent. I really like the rubbery grip feel on the bottom. I recommend giving the dpad a good breaking in if you experience diag problems.

Crisium, what do you have to do to change the default controls? Does something physical happen to the controller, or does that mean you have to go into options screen to remap the buttons? I actually still have my original Saturn (non-USB) and this controller kicks ass for SF2.
