Official Mad Catz FightPad Feedback Thread

I was able to exchange mine for a new one at a Gamestop. The new one is… better.

The bottom left diagonal is almost as bad as the ones on my first. It’s a little better though. The other 3 diagonals aren’t perfect, but are acceptable.

Hmm. This is one is better, sure, but it’s still not perfect. HCFs are still difficult, and unfortunately blocking low on the 1p side is still hard (because of that diagonal). But I think I may stick out with this one. It’s to the point where I can safely say that it’s better than the default Xbox 360 pad (I could not say this with my first one) but I’m still not completely satisfied. Oh well. I’ll just be handicapped until the PC version comes out and I can use my godsend Saturn pad.

Yeah, I agree. I’d say that’s “getting used to” the pad’s shortcoming. But I refuse to do that and I don’t think anyone should. Not only does it feel unnatural but that actually hurts your gameplay. It screws up timing when you do diagonal jump or block low by expending a few frames by rolling from right to up/right or down/right

Agreed. There are people that gasp actually prefer to play on pads. Just sucks that we can’t seem to get a good one :-/

Heh heh, “could be”? It is, hands down. With the official 360 pad, I always had problems with up-left being a bit too large, so I’d get some diagonal inputs occasionally. But I have to say my current FightPad with nigh-nonexistent up-left and down-left diagonals is markedly worse. I play Blanka, and getting his super out on the official pad is much, much easier and more reliable than the FightPad.

In short, I personally prefer the official 360 d-pad to my defective FightPad’s d-pad. That’s unacceptable.

That’s certainly possible that we may well be the vocal minority. But there’s no way to know for sure. This thread is still a good warning to would-be buyers that if your pad is screwed, you’re not alone.

I just hope Best Buy doesn’t give me shit when I try to exchange this thing on Monday.

yep… the d-pad is the only reason i got this controller… i got my money back from best buy… but i also had the receipt and only bought it a couple days ago…

Hmmmm…

So it seems like people that exclusively play fighters with a pad hate this controller… While people that use pads as a ‘casual’ alternative love the pad.

Yeah?

i dont like it.

I just got the pad, and I Like it very much. I got the Xbox 360 one with Ryu on it and it is pretty good. Only had one problem thought, the default windows drivers for it registered RT and LT as apart of an axis, and that was a no go. But I edited the inf from the XBCD drivers and got it working like a pro. I have this bundled with my laptop for trips now, instead of bringing my bulky arcade stick (TE ftw). If any of you want the modded inf of the XBCD drivers just holla.

No. The problem is that some pads have severe problems. Having owned 2 different pads, I can back this up.

But your statement is also true to an extent because the pad aficionados love the Saturn Pad and the Saturn Pad this is not. Mainly because of the diagonal issues.

I’ll just say that a really bad Madcatz Fightpad is equal to or even worse than the default 360 controller. But a good (or decent one) is certainly better. Because of this, I would make sure you have the option to exchange/return before you buy.

Well, it seems some genuinely cannot hit two directionals at the same time and some can… But, assuming you don’t have a defective one, the general consensus is ‘good’?

I guess I just got really lucky, because I was playing 3rd strike a little while ago and was doing every one of Alex’s moves without a hitch.

I don’t even know about that, really. The only pad I’ve ever known seriously for fighters is my old Dual Shock 1 that I still use now. I’ve never had the luck to use the Saturn Pad.

A defective FightPad is not crap because it pales to any existing pad. It’s crap because it’s crap. If this were the first pad I ever used, I’d still complain about how horrid the diagonals are.

Well, design-wise, this thing is PERFECT. I’m not comparing it to anything else; I’m strictly looking at it in a bubble based on what I’d expect to play SF or any other fighter. The feel of it, the size of the d-pad, the size and spacing of the face buttons, etc. It’s all there. The only problem is the manufacturing, but that’s a big, big problem.

I will not excuse the apparently shoddy manufacturing process. However, when I exchange this, if I’m lucky to get one that works, I’ll love it to death and might encourage any pad player to get one especially if they can keep rolling the dice and exchange until they get one that works.

I don’t blame you. I suggest the same, though, if anyone has the patience, the more pads that get sent back defective, the more chance of stable ones coming back to stores.

The problem isn’t “doing moves”, as I can reliably tiger knee and dragon punch with this FightPad. What I can not reliably do is jump backwards or jump forwards with certainty that I will not just jump vertical (or move to the left or right). This is the major concern. It’s not rolling into the corners, it’s isolated corner inputs.

Would u recommend the fightpad over the DS3?

If you are a PS3 user I recommend one of these:

http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkwZUSBQ20SaturnQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ

I cannot recommend them any higher. They are the best controllers ever.

Keep the following in mind however: 1)The default controls will have to be changed for SF4 2) You have no select button 3)you have no home button (that means no backwards compatible games with it)

If you don’t have a problem with that (and you shouldn’t) then I say grab one. It’ll run you a little less than the Madcatz at $30 and it’s the better controller in most regards. I have an easier time doing 2 horizontal button pushes for EX moves on the Madcatz Pad, however. That is it’s one advantage. But I use the shoulder buttons for 3P and 3K anyway, so it’s fine for me. Considering the importance of 3P and 3K in SF4, you’ll probably be fine too.

But a straightforward answer to your question: I prefer a “good” Madcatz Pad over a DS2 (never played with a DS3, sorry). But whose to say yours won’t be defective somehow anyway. I say go the Saturn route. Reconfiguring controls is a small price to pay for the best d-pad ever, imo.

No. It is more comfortable but it is not as accurate.
That is not a good tradeoff.

On the 360 I would suggest you play with the Analogue.
Go back and forth with both the Fightpad and the Analogue, you can pull a few moves off easier on the Fightpad, but the Analogue is more reliable.

Can someone post a size comparison picture between the FightPad and the Saturn pad or the Nubytech SF 15th pads?

Here is a fantastic video showing the EXACT problem with these controllers.

Pay special attention to 1:40 - 2:20. It shows the issue perfectly.

Could it be that this is only a problem because its the first batch of pads? Could madcatz fix the next batch? Or has that ship sailed?

I just canceled my SE stick order nd now i’m thinking of buying a pad. But since there are some problems with this product too, i’m doubting wether I should buy one or not. The dpad of the 360-controller sucks ass, but when looking at all of your reviews I don’t think this is a good option

I am so glad I found this place. I thought it was me. I picked up the 360 ken fightpad and when I press the 1 clock to 3 oclock(Jumping from left to right) in the heat of battle the character jumps straight up. I was going to exchange it the only had chun li . Then upon further research it seems like a widespread problem. I agree the dpad hole seems off centered. The only way to make it better for me is to press forward then diag.

Jumping diag in a fighting game is one of the most fundamentallty basic moves in any fighter. it is not like a 360 or fatality. The fact that these errors got past testing speaks volumes. The video really explains it well. It is very frustrating when fighting. One can get use to it but we shouldn’t have to. On a premier fighting pad. Although the pad is a blessing this is one unforgivable mistake.

I swear it is like the 1st gen psp.
